CENTER OF GRAVITY OF SIMPLE SOLID
• The weight of a body is a force acting at its own center of gravity
and directed toward the center of the Earth.
• The position of the center of bodies weighing W1, W2, W3, etc., is
found in the same manner as the resultant of parallel forces.

Σ Wx Σ Wy Σ Wz

ΣW ΣW ΣW

If the bodies are all the same material weighing ρ lb/ft3, then

W1 = ρ V1 W2 = ρ V2 W3 = ρ V3 etc.

Substituting in Eqs. (2), we have

Σ ρ Vx Σ Vx Σ ρ Vy Σ Vy Σ ρ Vz Σ Vz

Σ ρV ΣV Σ ρV ΣV Σ ρV ΣV
CENTER OF GRAVITY OF SIMPLE SOLID
That is, if the bodies are made of the same material and are of the
same density throughout, the center of gravity of the bodies is their
center of volume. If the bodies are of the same cross section but
perhaps of different lengths,

V1 = a l1 V2 = a l2 V3 = a l3 etc.

Substituting in Eqs. (3) produces,

CENTER OF GRAVITY OF SIMPLE SOLID
If the bodies are parts of a wire, pipe, or rod of constant cross
section, then their center of gravity may be found from the center of
their lengths.

The center of gravity of

a right circular cylinder The center of gravity of a right
is at the center of its circular cone is on the geometric
geometric axis axis, ¼ h from the base or ¾ h
from the vertex, where h is the
altitude of the cone
LATIHAN 2

A cylinder for which r = 2 in and h = 6 in has an inverted

cone cut from it (see figure). The cone, for which r = 2 in
and h = 3 in, has its base in the upper base of the
cylinder. Find the center of gravity of the part remaining.

Choose О as the origin. Since the figure is symmetrical with

respect to the axis OE, the center is on the axis and we
need only find y. The volume of the cylinder is

and for the cone,

V2 is negative because it
is volume removed.
