A. Introduction
With the fall of the old school brick and mortar stores we have been accustomed to new
websites and distribution companies arise. For Jane Grier this is the case as her old
employer Corner Bookstore has just been bought out by an online media startup called
Haven. But its not all bad news as she has been appointed to the position of Vice
President for Content Management and Delivery for the newly merged company. With
this merger of two companies brings hurdles such as the differing locations of the two
companies, Haven is and Australian based company while Corner was in the U.S. Jane as
the newly appointed V.P has to find a way to best communicate with her subordinates in
order to ensure success of the company while working away from them.
B. Statement of Problem
a. Jane’s subordinates work all around the globe and she needs to communicate with
them
i. Symptoms
1. Jane might have stress over her task
2. Ineffective line of communication before
3. Employees before could be unproductive
ii. Causes
1. Brick and mortar businesses becoming unpopular
2. Cheaper to do business remotely
3. Companies are on different sides of the world
iii. Jane must find a way to effectively communicate with all of her managers
across the globe
C. Decision Criteria and Alternate Solutions
a. An effective solution creates best line of communication between Jane and her
subordinates, minimizes cost to her company, and creates healthy relationships
between them all.
b. Alternative Solutions
i. Have quarterly meetings where the company flies out all the managers to
discuss the current and past business decisions.
ii. Create an email schedule for managers to discuss as well as a set time outside
of the workday for everyone to hold a virtual meeting to fit the varying time
zones
iii. Create email schedule and virtual meeting schedule but for only certain
managers on certain days which then will be re discussed at a better time for
everyone else.
D. Recommended Solution
a. Jane should create an email schedule for discussion between managers and herself
and set up a schedule for each manager to hold a virtual meeting and give the
responsibility of relaying that information to the manager. This solution would not

only save costs for the company compared to flying the managers out to have in
person meetings but also provide the most effective line of communication between
the managers and Jane. By only having a small virtual meeting with a few managers
and giving them the responsibility of relaying it keeps the workers relationships with
her better because most worker would rather not have to have a meeting at 9pm every
night and also gives managers more responsibility which boosts productivity. Risks
that might happen could be a loss of information through this communication style
but with the advances in technology the ordeal would only be discussed the
information could easily be linked and provided. Having employees work at home
can sometimes make them less productive but with the added responsibility and more
freedom of working at home workers will be kept on track and motivated.
