International Committee for Ion Exchange

Newsletter No 9 January 2012

Editor: Professor Michael Cox, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, AL10 9AB, U.K.
(m.cox@herts.ac.uk )

Content:

Most of this Newsletter is devoted to the international ion exchange conference IEX2012
which was previewed in the previous publication. There is still time to submit abstracts for
this meeting in September but I would ask that if you would like to submit an abstract could
you please send the title, authors and a short abstract giving details. Please note that this
meeting only considers solid resin ion exchange so papers involving solvent extraction cannot
be accepted.

2012 is a very important year in the UK as we celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June
which is followed by the Olympic Games (July), Paralympic Games (August) and of course
IEX2012 (September). Connected with these there will be a number of other events
throughout the year so it will be an ideal time to visit the UK. So why not attend IEX and
extend your stay to experience the legacy of these celebrations.

If you know of any other international meetings scheduled for 2012/3 I would be interested
to have details for inclusion in the next Newsletter currently planned following IEX2012.

Please feel free to circulate this Newsletter to your contacts in the ion exchange community
and if you would like to receive future copies please email the editor.

Meetings and Conferences

IEX 2012 – Wednesday 19th September – Friday 21st September 2012

Queens’ College, University of Cambridge, UK

As reported in the last Newsletter this is the latest in the series of international meetings
Conferences held every 4 years that provide the opportunity for manufacturing and service
companies, end users and researchers to present papers and discuss applications and
developments in the theory and practice of ion exchange and adsorbents.
www.soci.org/iex2012.

Papers:

Over 80 papers have already been submitted and accepted for the conference which is more
than were presented at IEX2008. As noted above we are still happy to accept abstracts for
the meeting and this extension of the close date has been possible because of a change in the
format of the conference proceedings. At past conferences all the papers presented at the
meeting have been published as a hard-back book available to delegates on registration. We
have decided this time to change the style of the proceedings so at IEX2012 registrants will
receive on registration a bound copy of 2-page extended abstracts and an electronic copy of
all the papers. This change has several benefits, which include the extension of the closing
date for submissions; the removal of the page limitation on papers; the use of colour in the
papers. In addition the reduction in costs has allowed us to hold the registration fee at the
same level as IEX2008, which I hope you will welcome as our contribution in these difficult
global financial times.

If you wish to submit a paper for the Conference please send the Title, Authors and a Brief
Summary of the paper to Patricia Cornell (patricia.cornell@soci.org) as soon as possible.

Conference Programme

The final programme of the conference including a list of papers, registration and
accommodation form will be published in mid-March at: www.soci.org/iex2012. If you are
not an author and would like notification by email please register your interest with Patricia
Cornell.

Technical Training Courses

As noted in the previous Newsletter the IEX Conference will be preceded by training course
in industrial applications of ion exchange:

Introduction to Ion Exchange Design and Operation for Industrial Water Treatment
(17th-18th September 2012);
Advanced Design of Ion Exchange Plants (17th-18th September 2012);
Applications of Ion Exchange in Bioprocessing (18th September 2012).

Details of these courses is available at: www.soci.org/iex2012 (follow link Training Courses)
or from Patricia Cornell (as above).

Accommodation

Study/bedroom accommodation will be available at Queens’ College in the middle of

Cambridge and details including booking form will be available in the final programme.
Details of hotel accommodation will also be available on request.

Industrial News

Lanxess:
 The Supervisory Board of LANXESS AG has appointed Dr. Axel C. Heitmann (51)
as Chairman of the Board of Management of LANXESS AG for a further five years.
The new mandate will begin as of July 1, 2012. Heitmann has been Chairman of the
Board of Management of LANXESS AG since September 2004.

 The first reverse osmosis membrane elements from LANXESS are scheduled for
launch on the market in early 2012.

 Membrane technology is used on a large scale for the production of drinking water.
Lewatit ion exchange resins are an effective addition as a downstream step to
eliminate any toxic impurities to a very low level. Examples include the selective
removal of arsenic with Lewatit FO 36 or the removal of nickel with Lewatit
MonoPlus TP 207.

 Ultra-pure water is mainly used in the electronics industry for the manufacture of
semiconductors and microchips, and in the pharmaceuticals industry. Water quality
requirements for residual conductivity and total organic carbon emissions are so
high that a combination of membranes and specially purified ion exchange resins is
necessary. With Lewatit UltraPure, LANXESS has developed high-performance
resins for the tough demands of polishing circuits.

 To help customers put the new membrane elements from LANXESS to optimal use,
calculation software will be available in early 2012 to support customer-specific
engineering. With this addition to the current version of the Lewatit-CalculatION
design software for Lewatit ion exchangers, water treatment specialists can
seamlessly switch from designing reverse osmosis systems to ion exchange resins.

 Detailed information about the company’s ion exchange resin product range is
available at www.lewatit.com.
