Question 1: A hollow aluminum tube has an outside diameter of 100mm and inside diameter of 80mm.
The tube is 2.5m long and the aluminum has a shear modulus of G=28GPa. If the tube is twisted in pure
torsion by torques acting at the ends, what is the angle of twist in degrees when the maximum shear
stress is 50 MPa.

Solution:

Tmax = Tr/J

T = Tmax * J / r

Angle of twist = TL/JG

= (Tmax*J)/r)(L) / JG

= (50Mpa (2500) / 50mm(28000))*(180/pi)

= 5.12 degrees

DYNAMICS

A stone is thrown upward at an angle of 30 degrees with the horizontal. It lands 60m measured
horizontally and 2m below measured vertically from its point of release. What is the initial velocity of
the stone in m/s.

Y = xtan(theta) – gx^2/ (2*Vi^2*cos(theta)^2)

-2 = 60tan(30) – (9.81)(60^2)/(2)(Vi^2)cos(30)^2

Vi = 26.13 m/s

Question 3: If open 1m diameter and 1.6 m high of cylindrical tank is full of water. At what angular
velocity in rpm will the bottom of the tank to be rotated such that 314 liters of water will be spilled.

Volume = 0.5*pi*r^2*h

0.314 = 0.5*pi*(0.5)^2*h

h = 0.79959

0.79959 = w^2*(0.5)^2 / (2*9.81)

w = 7.9216 rad/sec * 30/pi = 75.65rpm

QUESTION 4: What must be the angle with respect to horizontal such that the normal stress is thrice the
shear stress.

N = (P/A)cos^2(Theta)

S = (P/2A)Sin(2*Theta)

N = 3S

(P/A)cos^2(theta) = (3)(P/2A)(2sin(theta)cos(theta)

Tan(theta) = 1/3

Theta = 18.43 degrees
