1. Pick one drug you believe is important for seventh graders to know about. Name the drug Score

The drug I think is important to teach seventh graders about is Nicotine. With the rise of vaping teen Nicotine
addiction is rising. Teaching middle school kids about Nicotine, how addictive it is, and it’s dangers could help
them avoid getting addicted later.

2. What does this drug do to the brain, and what are its short-term and long-term effects on the Score
brain, the rest of the body, or the mind? Write at least 3 sentences on this topic that seventh
graders could understand.

Nicotine activates reward pathways and increases dopamine in the brain. Its short term effects are reduced
circulation to extremities (fingers/toes). It can also cause a feeling of relaxation and increased heart rate. Long
term Nicotine use can lead to many problems with organs like the cardiovascular system, the gastrointestinal
system, and the reproductive system. It also causes a lowered immune system.

3. What are some internal and external reasons that a teen might use, or decide not to use, Score
this drug? Write at least 3 sentences on this topic that seventh graders could understand.

Nicotine use has become very popular so people may want to try vaping to fit in or be cool. They might also Be
interested in the calming effects of Nicotine. Teens experience lots of stress and would hook onto something that
would reduce that.
