MULTIMEDIA
- MULTI: many/various
- MEDIA: software or hardware used for communication
- Multimedia is defined as the mixture of different content forms such as texts, music,
photos or images, interactive content, animations or videos
- It is also called RICH CONTENT because of its abundance of variation in presenting
information

CATEGORIES OF MULTIMEDIA
- LINEAR MULTIMEDIA
o The flow of content is predetermined by the creator
o The progression of the multimedia is straightforward
o Intended for display purposes with not much interaction or distraction from the
audience
o Examples: powerpoint presentation, youtube video, film/movie
- NON-LINEAR MULTIMEDIA
o Uses navigation components to provide the users freedom to move around the
application and seek the information they want
o prioritizes interactivity with the audience
o Examples: website, video game, telecommunications app: Skype

TYPES OF MULTIMEDIA
- Multimedia Games and Simulations
o Information is presented to the audience by imitating a real-life information
source into its digital environment.
- Multimedia Presentation
o Information is navigated in a sequence of slideshows and uses an application
layer.
- Multimedia Navigation
o Uses different graphical elements and is linked to different pages
o Web elements such as buttons and text links are incorporated
o The pages that users are directed to contains the information that they seek or
can direct them to other pages that may contain the information

APPLICATIONS OF MULTIMEDIA
- Advertisement
o One of the newest forms of advertisement is the one placed on public Web sites.
- Entertainment
o One of the most popular among multimedia applications
- Education
o Multimedia is now used as an unconventional method of teaching and learning.

o Electronic books and interactive books are some of the highlights of multimedia in
education.
- Industrial
o Multimedia in corporate and industrial fields play a major role in different aspects
of the industry from management and sales.

VIDEO ON DEMAND (VOD)


- Systems that enable users to select video and audio content when they want it.
- Examples are PODCASTING & VODCASTING
- PODCASTING: used to transmit or broadcast digital radio programs over the internet.
- VODCASTING: transmission of video broadcast

ONLINE COURSEWARE AND TUTORIALS


- Open CourseWare (OCW) refers to lecture videos that are published by universities on
the Web.
- It aims to educate people online on different subjects and disciplines.

ICT FOR ADVOCACY AND DEVELOPMENTAL COMMUNICATION


- ICT for development or ICT4D is the use of information and communications technology
in the field of international development, socioeconomic development and human rights.
- using ICT for the welfare of less fortunate individuals and enabling the development of
society

THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA


- Issues and posts shared in a social media web site can reach millions of users within a
shorter period of time
- Photos/Videos of some abusive individuals and their crimes have been posted on social
media, so that people are informed
- Some users also post images of missing people
- Some people even share posts about other people doing good deeds that are often
unnoticed.

MMS – Multimedia Messaging System People use these platforms to inform other people of
Computers & Mobile Phones different issues

*Many Filipinos use social media and other online platforms to inform other people of different
issues. Social Media has also been used to express vigilance and expose the wrong doings of
people in authority. Here are a few examples:

 PEOPLE POWER I (EDSA I)


o One of the first times that the power of communication and the power of citizens
were used in the Philippines.
o Television, print (newspapers) and radio were heavily used.
o Cardinal Sin called upon the citizens to participate in the protest at EDSA. He used
broadcast radio to send information to the citizens
o Lasted from 1983-1986
o A major protest took place along EDSA from February 22-25, 1986 involving two
million Filipinos from different sectors.

 PEOPLE POWER II (EDSA II)


o Apart from print, television and broadcast radio, MOBILE PHONES were also used.
o Vast number of individuals were informed immediately
o Popularity of Mobile Phones enabled group texts and chain messages that helped
spread the information more quickly.
o Happened during January 17-21, 2001.
o It was fueled after 11 prosecutors of then President Joseph Estrada walked out of
the impeachment trial.
o Like the first People Power Revolution, EDSA Dos would not have been successful
without the text brigades.

 MILLION PEOPLE MARCH


o The first time that Filipinos protested not against an individual but against a
system.
o Protest against the PORK BARREL fund
o Many people believed that this fund was being used.
o The gathering was planned weeks before and calls for participation flooded in
SOCIAL MEDIA, specifically on Facebook and Twitter
o Mainly took place in Luneta Park from August 22 -26, 2013.
o Though dubbed as the Million People March, the number of total attendees was
only around 400,000.
o The organizers and promoters of the Million People March used Facebook and
Change.org as their mediums.

 CHANGE.ORG
o Dubbed as the “world’s platform for change” where anyone from the online
community can create a petition and ask others to sign it.
o Change.org’s mission is to help people from around the world create the change
they want to see.
o Change.org gives access to more people by allowing the online community to affix
their digital signatures on a petition.
o For years, Change.org hosted several petitions that help solve the following
problems: economic problems, criminal injustice, abuse of human rights, lack of
education, environmental concerns, animal abuse, human health concerns and
world hunger.

ICT PROJECTS FOR SOCIAL AWARENESS

1) PHILIPINES SAY NO TO DRUGS


- This is a non-profit organization and an arm of the Dangerous Drugs Board under the
Office of the Republic of the Philippines.
- ICT Application was used by this organization thru website.
- Aside from its website, the organization uses Social Media applications to deliver
information to the public.

- Programs and campaigns under this organization:


o Barkada Kontra Droga (Peer Group against Drugs)
 Primary target of this program are the out-of-school youth.
 The government institutionalized peer groups and educated them
to have a healthy lifestyle and avoiding dangerous drugs by
channeling their attention and time in different activities for
themselves and the community.
o National Youth Congress on Drug Abuse Prevention and Control
 Serves as an avenue for the youth to meet new friends and foster
camaraderie among them.
 Offers an avenue for the youth to brainstorm solutions on the
issues of drug abuse and its threat to the youth.
o Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program
 Activity-oriented program designed for students that aims to
educate youth on how to deal with problems without resorting to
drug abuse.
 Joint effort of DEPED and PNP
o Kids Against Drugs Program
 Anti-drug activities and programs are facilitated for children.
 The event is done in conjunction with the celebration of Children’s
Month every October

 Aims to teach children the implications of using drugs and the
different ways on how to say no to drugs
o Nationwide Caravan of Youth Against Drugs
 This is a program done in partnership with the Dangerous Drugs
Board and the National Youth Commission.
 Focused on a caravan of about 1400 youth members from
different communities, organizations, schools and universities.
 The caravan focuses on developing and informing the youth on
activities or alternative tasks instead of using prohibited drugs.
o Drug Abuse Prevention Program for the Transport Groups
 Program dedicated to the safety of commuters and motorists
regarding drug abuse and public transport.
 This program aims to reduce if not eliminate drug-related
accidents and dangers.

2) UNITED NATIONS OFFICE ON DRUGS AND CRIME (UNODC)


- This is a United Nations member organization dedicated to the issues brought upon by
drug trafficking and drug abuse.
- This organization uses ICT by devising a Web site to fulfill its goals and purpose.
- Campaigns launched by this agency are the following:
o World Drug Campaign
 This is the campaign done to save the youth from drug abuse and
help them say no to drugs.
o International Anti-Corruption Campaign
 In collaboration with the United Nations Development Program to
fight corruption and power abuse around the world.
o Blue Heart Campaign Against Human Trafficking
 This is the campaign that aims to involve everyone to condemn
human trafficking around the world.
3) NATIONAL CITIZENS’ MOVEMENT FOR FREE ELECTIONS (NAMFREL)
- This is an election watchdog organization formed to ensure peaceful and truthful
elections.
- This agency conducts its own count of votes.
- ICT was used by NAMFREL through SMS and Social Media, calling out volunteers to help in
guarding the credibility of the election results.

4) Philippine animal welfare society (PAWS)


- This is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the welfare of animals.
- This agency provides shelter to abused animals and aids their rehabilitation.
- This organization uses Social Media for information dissemination and enables netizens to
report animal abuses.

- Start the slideshow from the first slide (f5)
- Inserting a new slide (ctrl + m)
- Duplicating a current slide (ctrl + d)
- Increasing font size (ctrl + shift + >)
- Decreasing font size (ctrl + shift + <)
- Inserting a hyperlink (ctrl + k)
- View the slide show from the current slide forward (shift + f5)
- Hide the pointer or pen during a show (ctrl + h)
- Return to the first slide during show (1 + enter)
- End the slideshow (esc or -)

STEPS TO INSERT A HYPERLINK


1. Select the image or text you want to make a hyperlink.
2. Right-click the selected text or image, then click Hyperlink. Alternatively, you can go to
the Insert tab and click the Hyperlink command.
3. The Insert Hyperlink dialog box will open.
4. If you selected text, the words will appear in the Text to display field at the top. You can
change this text if you want.
5. Type the address you want to link to in the Address field.
6. Click OK. The text or image you selected will now be a hyperlink to the web address.
