Why do women need empowerment? Are we weak? Are we second-class citizens? One
needs empowerment when one is weak in what they do. So, the question arises, are we weak in
being women? Certainly not. We do not need empowerment. What we rather need is the
assertiveness of our identities and claiming our rights and exercising them openly. We need to
realise the light within us...

The world celebrated International women’s day on 8th March and thus, team Young
Moves decided to talk about women. Thus, we bring to you an assortment of topics related to
and necessary for women. The magazine begins with an analysis of feminism and how it has
shaped up in modern times. We move forward to one of the most important aspects of women-
their health. Women often neglect their health while taking care of the entire family and this
needs to be changed soon. Thus, Sanatan Women, the women wing of Paavan Chintan Dhara
Ashram also organised a health check-up camp for women which is covered in the magazine.
A mother then talks about the importance of parenting in the 21st century where young people
are becoming more distracted, sad and lonely. We move forward to the status of women in
three different times of the Sanatan culture- during Manusmriti, Ramayana and
Mahabharata. Thus, this issue talks about women and Manusmriti, breaking some myths
about Sita and finally, covering the episode of disrobing of Draupadi. We move forward to a
serious contemplation on who subjugated women after the time of Mahabharata. We also
analyse how their position fell from being completely free in their choices to a woman clad in a
veil. The following articles include an analysis of the status of women in Christianity and
Islam.

We move forward to more contemporary issues like the reason behind increasing rape
cases, laws related to women, the freedom of women, difference between compromise and
adjustment in a woman’s life, the gender roles persisting even before birth and how we are
humans before our genders. The magazine also covers the scientific reasons behind the
celebration of Holi in the section ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon.’

Thus, we try to cover the status of women from older times to the contemporary time and
how we need to change to make the future better because if one woman grows, the family
grows and so does the society.

 Ignited Pens Feminism:
A Glass half of water & half of air
Did you read the title? Now do one thing… close
the magazine. Do you think it’s a joke? No, really.
Close the magazine and think about the title. What
do you think about after reading this title?
Feminism is of different types. Our views of
feminism may vary but according to me the meaning
of feminism is equality. This is because the opposite
of patriarchy is not matriarchy. If a society is
matriarchal, men will also raise their voices for
equality. So, the opposite of patriarchy is equality
and that’s the real meaning of feminism.
Now, coming back to the title. You might be
confused about the title thinking which is good and
which is bad. But, think carefully. Is air bad for us? Is
water bad for us? No, none of them is bad. We can’t
live without both of them. Both are the basic needs
of a human being.
When we read the Mahabharata, we get to know
that in those times, women were capable of doing
everything and were allowed to do many things like
choosing their lovers, marrying more than one man.
Hahaha! one can say that women were living their
lives like queens. And, as the era changed, people
stopped respecting women and instead of limiting
their gazes, men forced ‘Purdah’ (veil) on women. I
feel that this veil was one of the factors, among
many, which reduced the self-confidence of women
and made them consider themselves as the inferior
gender.

Males nowadays don’t allow their wives to work
in offices. Males don’t allow women to dress as per
their wishes, don’t allow them to go anywhere they
want. I just want to ask a simple question- Who are
men to allow them or not allow them? Men should
encourage their children and wife, men should
support them.
Some women have also misused feminism. They
have promoted pseudo-feminism. For instance,
when we talk about #metoo movement, many cases
came where men were found innocent but because
of this movement, many companies fired these men,
taking away their source of income and security.
Another interesting case was that because of this
#metoo movement, many companies fired or
avoided hiring women employees because of the
fear that they might raise a false case against them.
Also, some pseudo-feminists target people for fame
and money. They do not care about the feelings of
men and even women, all they care about is money
and fame.
When I talked to Avani Khurana about her
views on feminism and the need of it, she shared her
views on this topic: “Feminism isn’t about being
superior to men which, nowadays, it is highly
misunderstood as. It is about equality of men and
women and equality here does not mean being
identical. A lot of people say that because men and
women are biologically different, we can’t expect
them to be treated alike everywhere. But feminism
as an ideology doesn’t even demand or propagate
that. The issue has always been equal access to
opportunities. Every now and then, few measures
are taken in favour of women which naturally might
seem unfair to men but are necessary in order to
uplift and empower women because of them being
the oppressed gender. The problem arises when
women start taking undue advantage of privileges as
menial as seats reserved for women in public
transport. I wouldn’t disagree that we have come a
long way and women have been progressing but,
there is still a long way to go; to defeat patriarchy, to
eliminate the implicit gender biases prevailing in
our society and rise above them all. Feminism can
only work when there are as many male feminists as
there are females because unless all of us realise
why we need it, we wouldn’t be able to achieve it.”
While Subhashree Barik talked about feminism
as, “Feminism is a belief in social, economic and
political equality of the sexes which manifested
worldwide committed to Women's rights and
interest. Feminism distilled down at its core is about
choice and gender equity. If you think as a human
being you deserve equal rights and equal access to
all opportunities then you are a FEMINIST hence
Feminism is RIGHT, the concept is RIGHT. The
issue here is about equal rights and equal access to
opportunities. Men and women don't have to be the
"same" in physicality to have the right to equality.
There is a continual cultural flaw in the way we view
and critique women. It's immensely difficult to
prioritize what's important when we critique
ourselves constantly as a result of the world's harsh
judgment. Most women have been deprived of self-
satisfaction and appreciation because of social
pressure and perception. But there are small and
achievable steps we can take. We should call on both
genders to immaculate objectification when
discussing women. If we ever want an end to the
way females are put in boxes, this is the beginning of
an important and tumultuous journey ahead. We
should acknowledge that beauty is in the eye of the
beholder. Not just in a literal appearance sense, but
in every part of who we are. It is not our fault that we
are treated unfairly and always considered "Too"
something. We are the right amount of strength to
counter this bullshit. There is another facet to
misogyny: internalized sexism. It happens when
women themselves mistreat other women based on
their gender. Even as a devout feminist, I have
walked on the societal thorns of being dusky. I
encourage others to take a look at themselves on the
spectrum of injustice. We are all a part of it, and it is
important to make a personal change if that's not too
much to ask. At the END: Do you believe that a
world that prevents certain people from accessing
full rights and opportunities would lead to a fair,
healthy, prosperous world for all? Feminist doesn't
mean "person who hates men". Feminist means
"person who believes people should have equitable
places in society regardless of their gender" because
there is a difference between "Feminist and
Misandrists". Hence, A portion does not equal the
WHOLE, even if that portion is LOUD. It seems so
because a shallow personality prefers anti-feminists
who like to cherry-pick misleading quotes. Men
engage in sexism because they've been taught to
behave/think that way and women internalize it for
the same reason. Feminism asks both men and
women to critically think about that normalized
behaviour and its impact and holds people
accountable for sexist thinking and behaviour even
if they didn't initially realize it was sexist. The crux
is: Do you use Feminism to carve an equitable
society for ~mothers, sisters, and daughters you
love~ all human beings, of all genders?
Hitanshi Gayakwad shared her views,
“Feminism is, by all means, right for each and every
point it stands for but people who don't understand it
has belittled it. It's not anti-men or demeans any
gender, it stands for equality and its main aim is to
make a society where an individual's gender doesn't
restrict them from an equal shot at success and
happiness. Women, men, girls, boys. What is the
main similarity they all share? They are human.
They are human beings. They belong to the same

species. We, as humans, are all not always the same,
but we are equal. Then why should one gender be
allowed to have more possibilities, more rights,
more education, more vulnerability, more chances
to live? In a world, system and society humans
created and built up themselves? Right, it makes no
sense. No sense at all. This is why we need
feminism. And it is the belief that men and women
should have equal rights and opportunities. You can
be pro-women without being anti-men. We should
call out inequality, in each and every situation small
or big, it should be referred and solved. Make men
understand that gender equality is their issue too,
they should stand for it. From a younger age,
children should be educated about respect for every
gender and equality among them.”
From all the above views, I see two damaged
roots in the working of society because of which
need for feminism arises:
Education, or lack of education
Parenting, or lack of good parenting thereof
Parenting: When we talk about parenting, this is
the major issue in India. Many parents are not able to
play the role of a good parent as they are not able to
adapt to the changing environment so they become
instructors instead of being good parents. Females
also don’t have much power like the males in
patriarchal houses and so what child sees in the
house, they enact it. When young boys see that
especially girl children are told to be safe and denied
going out or denied from doing stuff because of her
safety, those young boys also grow to learn the
same. In future, they also start restricting women.
Safety measures should be taken but the society
shouldn’t tell girls that they are weak and that they
needed to be protected from wolves. Instead, the
girls should be taught to fight and boys should be
taught to not act like wolves. Boys should be taught
to be humans and respect every fellow human.
I know that the parents who are reading this will
worry. I know that you care for and love your child a
lot, but over caring or giving a very protected

environment will kill your child from inside. Just
imagine that a girl has to live her life as her parents
want and then after marriage, she has to adjust
according to her husband. This is not right. Let us
free our sisters, daughters, wife and every woman to
breathe in fresh air like they want to, support them,
love them, care for them and let them decide what
they want to do.
Never try to stop them because even water is
ruined when stopped. So, let the water flow.
Similarly, let women live their lives according to
their wishes. If we want society to flourish and
develop, we’ll have to educate the women and let
them grow because when a woman is educated, she
teaches the entire family. These educated women
lead the nation and give it children who grow up to
serve the nation.
I also want to highlight the importance of the
mental and physical health of women while talking
about their growth. They often ignore and neglect
their health while taking care of the healths of their
families and this should not be the case. The
happiness index of India has decreased in the past
few years and while we were on the 118th position in
2013-2015, we fell to 140th position. How will the
people of a country spread happiness when they
themselves are not happy? You might be thinking
about why I am talking about happiness Index?
Women are the bearers of happiness and if the
women of a society are not happy, how will society
be happy. Thus, it is the responsibility of every
person to make others happy, especially the women
of the house. I believe that the answer to these
problems is in:
Good education
Good parenting

Although women in developed (industrialised)
countries have narrowed the gender gap in social
factors like life expectancy and live longer than
men, gender still remains an important social
determinant of health. This is because women's
health is influenced not just by their biology but also
by socio-economic conditions such as poverty,
employment, and family responsibilities. Women's
reproductive and sexual health has different factors
as compared to men's health. Hormonal changes
every month not only bring the rain of blood but also
the wind of mood swings and lightening of hot
flashes and cramps. In simple terms, menstruation is
a tiring process that happens every month and a
survivor of this weather must know hacks to
survive.
Being young and getting older
Adolescent period brings a big wave with it. This
wave includes menarche (first-time menstruation),
development of breasts, attraction towards the
opposite gender, sexual desires etc. This confused
period of time can lead to many disastrous results
like unplanned pregnancy and STDs. Sex education
and parental support can play an important role to
avoid such mishaps.
Menopause is the end of periods, normally after
the age of 50. The symptoms include irregular
periods, sleep problems, mood changes, hot flashes
etc. It could need medications if there is extensive
bleeding, depression or if it occurs prematurely.

Mental health during menstruation
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a collection of
physical and emotional symptoms that start a week
or so before your period. It makes some people feel
more emotional than usual and others bloated and
achy. Changes in oestrogen and progesterone levels
also influence serotonin levels. This is a
neurotransmitter that helps regulate your mood,
sleep cycle, and appetite. Low levels of serotonin are
linked to feelings of sadness and irritability, in
addition to trouble sleeping and unusual food
cravings — all common PMS symptoms. Vitamin
B6 can help with PMS symptoms. Lifestyle
activities like exercise, nutrition and proper sleep
can calm the symptoms of PMS.
Hysteria- Purely a blindfold misconception needs
to be unfolded in this regard. Exhibiting a wide array
of symptoms, including anxiety, shortness of breath,
fainting, nervousness, sexual desire, insomnia, fluid
retention, heaviness in the abdomen, irritability, loss
of appetite is a part of Premenstrual Syndrome. It is
no longer recognized by medical authorities as a
medical disorder. In the past, patients were treated by
pelvic massage which led to the invention of vibrator
which gave a rhythmic massage. But vibrator, due to
its appearance in pornographic films, got a sexually-
erotic hue and is branded as a sinful instrument.
Stay healthy during your periods
Here are some tips for women to stay healthy
during their periods:
Change your sanitary napkin every 4-6 hours.

  Do not put a tampon for a long time, it can also
cause dryness in the vagina leading to severe
bacterial infection. Menstrual cups are a good option
for working women. Keep proper cleanliness of
reusable pads and cups.
Take hot baths and hot drinks to ease cramps.
Eat healthy food, take proper sleep and take part
in light exercise.
Don't be afraid of taking painkillers if the
cramps are exceeding beyond your control limit.
Use intimate hygiene wash during periods to
avoid any type of infection.
Contraception – An armour
Different methods of contraception are available
for women according to the demand of the situation
and body. Choosing a suitable method needs
information about each of it:
Long-acting reversible contraception like
implants and intrauterine devices which can last up
to 3-10 years.
Hormonal contraception like pills and Depo
Provera injection are effective for 3 months. Saheli
is the only contraceptive pill that is non-hormonal. It
is a selective estrogen receptor modulator which acts
on the estrogen receptor. It is a non-steroidal oral
contraceptive pill.
Barrier methods such as condoms. Condoms
also prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
which include HIV, human papillomavirus infection
HPV), gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, syphilis etc. The
HPV test is also recommended for ladies in every 3-
5 years. HPV vaccines are available to avoid
infections.
Emergency contraception
Permanent contraception like vasectomy and
tubal ligation
Fertility awareness
Better be aware than misguided
Symptoms of breast cancer include a new lump or
area of thickened tissue in either breast, change in
size or shape of the breast, discharge from nipples,
lump or swelling in the armpit, dumpling or rash on

breast's skin or nipples etc.
Breast pain is not usually a symptom of breast
cancer. A routine self check-up of the breast is
recommended to be on a safe road. The most
common symptom of uterine cancer is abnormal
vaginal bleeding. Other symptoms include unusual
vaginal discharge, painful urination, pain during
intimacy, pressure or pain in the pelvic region,
weight loss etc. Uterine cancer, if diagnosed earlier,
can be cured by surgically removing the uterus
(hysterectomy).
Myths and reality
Myth: If I will use a tampon, I will no longer be
virgin as my hymen will break.
Reality: The hymen is a thin piece of mucosal
tissue that surrounds or partially covers the external
vaginal opening. The state of never having sexual
intercourse is termed as virginity. So, there is no
correlation between the two. The hymen is not the
sign of virginity as it can break during heavy
exercises like horse riding or cycling.
Myth: Hormonal medication given during any
treatment is very harmful for the future.
Reality: Hormonal therapy is prescribed for
vaginal dryness, irregularities of periods, hot flashes
and other problematic symptoms of menopause. The
recent analysis actually shows that the risk of heart
disease may be related more to the advanced age of
the participants as opposed to the Hormonal
medication. Treatment must be done under
gynaecologist to prevent any risk.
Myth: If you see vaginal discharge, something is
probably wrong.
Reality: Normal vaginal discharge helps to clean
the vagina, as well as keep it lubricated and free from
infection and other germs. It does not have a foul
smell and typically has no odour at all. Normal
vaginal discharge often appears clear or milky when
it dries on your undergarment. Some signs that may
indicate an infection include:
 Changes in colour, consistency (sometimes
similar to cottage cheese), or amount.
Itching, discomfort, or a rash.
Vaginal burning during urination.
The presence of blood when it’s not the time
for your period.
A foul odour accompanied by yellowish,
greenish, or greyish-white vaginal discharge. If you
have a vaginal discharge along with any of the
aforementioned signs, consult your health care
provider for diagnosis and treatment.
Myth: I missed my periods, does that mean I am
pregnant?
Ans. If a pregnancy test is negative, there could
be other reasons responsible for missed periods like
weight changes, stress, thyroid problem, eating
disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal
disorder common among women of reproductive
age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or
prolonged menstrual periods or excess male
hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may
develop numerous small collections of fluid
(follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs.
Common symptoms of PCOS include:
Irregular periods or no periods at all.
 Difficulty getting pregnant (because of
irregular ovulation or failure to ovulate) excessive
hair growth.
Usually on the face, chest, back or buttocks
weight gain.
Thinning hair and hair loss from the head oily
skin or acne.
Fertility problems.
Type 2 diabetes, depression, high blood
pressure and high cholesterol are a common risk in
later life.

Health Checkup Camp

Women are the foundation of any family, country and society. Hence, their mental
and physical health is very important. It is impossible for the country to progress, without
the development of women. Though the women take excellent care of their families’
health, they are negligent about their own health. Keeping this in mind, “Sanatan
Women,” a project of “Paavan Chintan Dhara Ashram,” is trying to solve women's health
problems and make them aware of their health. On Women’s Day, Sanatan Women
organized “Free Health Checkup Camp” in Indirapuram Ghaziabad.

Apart from the important examination of mammography in lieu of the increased risk
of Breast Cancer, in India; blood pressure, blood sugar, dental check-up, eye test, bone
density test, etc. were also tested free of cost in this camp. Physician, Dentist,
orthopaedics, Ophthalmologist other such doctors were also present in this health camp
to give proper counselling regarding the women’s physical problems. Dr Varsha, Dr
Ashish Sharma, Dr Isha, Dr Monika Sharma, Dr Ramesh, Dr Anshul helped us in this
health check-up camp.

About 100 women, of all ages and categories, participated in this camp, which started
with hailing the victory of Bharat Mata. Apart from the health check-up of women, they
were also made aware of the importance of their health care. Female students from
Denmark also participated in this program. All the women participating pledged to take
care of themselves, after becoming conscious of the importance of their health. The
Rotary and Rotract Club, Shahdara gave significant support for the success of this event.

21st century
“If parents want their children to be like Lord
Ram then they themselves have to be like Dasrath
and Kaushalya.” Thus, parenting is a very important
aspect in the lives of parents and children which can
either enhance the society or degrade it. Children
are like clay and their parents are like those potters
who put values and morals in children and mould
them into strong pots. These children then exhibit
their values, sacrifices and dedication towards the
nation and society. According to Dr Pawan Sinha
Guruji, the brain development of any child is
maximum until the age of 12, thereafter their
learning is through experiences. That’s why it’s
important for parents to focus on the right parenting
of their kids for the betterment of their mental,
physical and emotional growth.
Have you ever thought the reasons behind
increasing cases of rapes, violence, depression,
suicides, divorce and loneliness in the society? Why
is the youth of the country so attracted to violence
and crime? Why is society forcing women to stay
indoors or reach home early or asking them to hold
themselves back and not compare to boys? On the
other hand, boys are asked to be “manly” and not to
be like girls or “girly.” Why is it that boys are taught
to ignore their pain? These idioms and phrases that
society commonly uses are the ones which create a
problem for the kids and make them grow with it.
If the same society teaches their boys to stay in
their limits and respect kids, teaches them to be soft,
sensitive and compassionate towards others, then
problems like rape cases and molestation can be

easily avoided. Simultaneously, girls should be
taught to be mentally and physically strong while
also being emotional. Due to a lack of the right kind
of parenting, our society today is becoming more
and more emotionless and they are lacking in
compassion. Also because of an increasing number
of nuclear families and both parents being working,
the anger, loneliness and other complexes are
increasing in children. Fights among parents is also
a big reason behind the depressed and violent state
of children. Excessive consumption of junk food
also disturbs the hormonal balance in children and
makes them violent. This race against the world
which creates a lack of time for everyone has made
children go away from their grandparents and
elders which has also decreased the amount of
cultural and values in these children and youth. This
race and the competition of achieving everything
first has also increased unsatisfaction and anxiety in
youth.
But, when we look into the matter with far-
sighted vision and analysis, we understand that
almost 90 per cent of society’s problems can be
solved by good parenting. Every child is unique in
this world and thus they should be brought up by
different techniques. It is the duty of aware parents
to be calm and patient and to be good parents for
their child. Parents, through good parenting, can
imbibe values like honesty, patience, compassion
and respect towards others, to create a healthy
society.

It is said that equality begins at home, but we have to ask
ourselves how much progress has been made towards equality
in parenting? Why a man has more say in the decisions of
reproduction even though a woman is the one who is most
affected? Why only a father is the sole authority in the family to
make decisions with respect to the child? Indeed, a father is

involved in parenting but yet it's the mother who put in more
Delhi, India work. A mother, being the bearer and the nurture of the child,
has a beautiful connection with the baby from day one.
Everything changes for women from the day they plan to become a mother, be
it the slight changes in their routine that they make to going through all the
pain that it takes to bring a life in this world. Still, society fails to appreciate
the very existence of a woman, let alone her rights. This is why the parenting
pressure falls more intensely on the mother as she is supposed to do all the
multitasking, be more organised, managing and self-less.

The reason behind this nothing but patriarchy. Patriarchy has been
prevailing for decades, which puts the onus on women to make all the
sacrifices and yet be the least significant person. It's the mother who is
expected to leave everything behind and look after the child, as it would be
'unmanly' for the father to do so. Now, gradually the young parents are trying
to outgrow these notions. Especially in urban societies, both the parents are
educated and aware and are equally the most influential individuals in
children's lives and now the challenges to shape the child's mind, beliefs and
values are faced together. It is said that a child is a reflection of his parents and
if they are brought up in a family having equality at all levels, it would make
patriarchy fade away in the future.

I come from a family where they differentiate
between son and daughter. Yes, and I am proud of
that difference. Because I am a girl, I used to get
more love, more designer clothes, more
opportunities to travel with my mother and father

am treated with the same difference. I get more love
by my in-laws and my needs are given more
preference. I am respected more. Some differences
are good. My parents gave me rights and at the same
time taught me to do my duties correctly. Integrity in
personality comes from maintaining equality and
balance in both rights and duties. By dutyless rights,
evil thrives in society.
But this is not the condition of many women
around me, their life is full of duties but their rights
are zero. Being a woman, they have to face
discrimination in many places in society. Unlike
me, they are given very few rights in their home,
which aches my heart. Due to this pain, once I was
searching the internet and in every article, I came
across one word- “Patriarchy” and upon deeper
research came the word- “Brahmanical” and both
combined to become “Brahmanical patriarchy”
which was then linked to Manuwaad, and
Manuwaad came from Manusmriti. Manusmriti is
an ancient Sanatan scripture, thousands of years old,
which gave laws to govern society. Every feminist
considers these rules of Manusmriti to be the reason
for this bad condition of women and Dalits in India.
Upon learning this, I was already very angry at
Manusmriti and the feminist within me was ignited.

So, I thought let’s read this anti-woman scripture and
see what’s wrong with it. But as soon as I started
reading Manusmriti, my anger got turned into
amazement. Do you want to know why? Come, let’s
read some Shlokas from Manusmriti.
A. Security measures for physical
and social conditions.
Chapter 8 Shlok 351, Chapter 8 Shlok 363,
Chapter 8 Shlok 72 mention:
The man instigating another woman must be
given very harsh punishments, and his genitals must
be cut off and must be exiled from the country.
A man having a sexual relationship with a minor
girl must be given a death sentence.
Statements of witnesses of cases regarding rape,
kidnapping and prostitutes must not be heard much
and immediate punishment must be given.
I wish these immediate punishments should also
be present today, then the criminals of Nirbhaya case
wouldn’t still be alive. Whenever we talk about rape
cases, some people say that we should adopt Sharia
law, where immediate punishment is given, but they
don’t know that these kinds of laws were given in
Manusmriti 1000s of years before Islamic law even
came.
Chapter 8 Shlok 28, 29 say:
A king must protect the property of sterile,

Chapter 4 Shlok 185 say:
A servant is like our shadow, means they are no
different from us. Daughters and servants must be
respected a lot and even if they say something
angrily, one must tolerate it and should not
deteriorate on them.
After reading this Shlok, I realized that I got too
much love just because I was a daughter and the
qualities of our scriptures are still in our genes.
Sanatan Dharm has always considered everyone
the same, that’s why they mention servants too, as
an indifferent part of ours and says not to get angry
at them.
E. Rules against Dowry
Chapter 3 Shlok 51 says:
One should not take even a little money in
exchange for his daughter, because the father who
takes any kind of money is said to have sold his
child.
Such a man is condemned in society who takes
money in exchange for his daughter because he is
said to have sold his child.
According to a 2015 report of NCRB, there are
approximately 21 deaths due to dowry on a daily
basis. Only if everyone had followed Manusmriti,
we wouldn’t have this social evil of dowry, and all
those ladies who died because of this would be today
present with us.
Chapter 9 Shlok 99 says:
We never heard from our ancestors that females
were sold or traded in the Indian culture.
I wish Arab and Western world followed these
rules too, where females were sold as sex slaves.
F. Respect of women in family
and arrangements for proper care
Chapter 3 Shlok 56, 57 say:
Devtas live where women are worshipped
which means places where families and relations are
easily maintained. And the places where women are
not worshipped, there all types of Yagyas are wasted.
The family where women are sad and depressed
is eventually destroyed. And the family where
females are happy, they prosper.
Chapter 9 Shlok 94 says:
The truth is that a man gets a wife by the
blessings of Devtas. And, to please the Devtas, he
must respect and take proper care of his wife.
The happiness of a family depends upon the
happiness of females, means, it is the duty of every
man who wants happiness for his family to make his
wife happy and arrange for her proper clothing and
food at special occasions like marriages and big
family gatherings. When a lady is adorned with
jewellery, that increases the grace of family. And, if
the woman is unhappy then the whole family is
disgraced.
Where Husband and wife are not happy with
each other, then that family can never be happy.

 Chapter 8 Shlok 101 says:
When a man and a woman are tied in the
relationship of marriage, they must try to save it and
never be a problem for each other.
Now I understand why there are no words like
divorce in Sanatan Dharma because we focus on
keeping relations intact. And it is the female who
suffers more upon breaking off a relationship.
Chapter 9 Shlok 73, 74 say:
A man, who is going on a foreign visit, must
first do arrangements of food and clothing for his
wife, as even a pious woman can become corrupt
due to starvation. " ” on her own.
A woman must also be patient when a man goes
on a foreign trip after completing all the necessary
arrangements.
Chapter 3 Shlok 114, 115 say:
Without a thought, food must be served to
unmarried, minor and pregnant women even before
Guests. There’s no problem with that.
A fool who eats before serving the above
mentioned- unmarried, minor and pregnant women
don’t know that this can result in him being the food
of dogs and vulture after death.
The Sanatan Dharm which respects women is
great. If a woman becomes unstable then the whole
family becomes unstable, so it is necessary to keep
her happy and satisfied. But due to our lack of
knowledge of our Sanatan Dharma, many forgot to
respect women, which resulted in discord in
families and in the country.
G. Freedom of women regarding
marriage
Chapter 9 Shlok 88, 89 say:
Though a woman might stay unmarried for her
whole life, she must not be married to an unworthy
man.

Sometimes parents marry their daughter due to
big age or due to “what would people say”, to an
unworthy man, and as a result of which, the lady
suffers. If the Indian families had read the
Manusmriti, then the girls, who are married to an
unworthy man and suffer due to it, would have been
saved from that suffering.
A woman must wait for three years after getting
ready for marriage, for her father to find a perfect
groom for her. If the father is unable to find the
groom for her then the lady can search for the groom
Today in the name of love marriage, we talk
about freedom of a woman to choose the life partner,
but the Sanatan Dharm gave this freedom thousands
of years back. Swayamvar is also something just
like this.
I have read one Shlok of Manusmriti at many
different places, 9th Chapter, Shlok 3 says: “Lady in
Childhood, youth, old age, is protected by her father,
husband and son respectively. She is always
dependent on them and must always be dependent
as she can never be independent.” Based on this
Shlok many articles declare Manusmriti to be anti-
woman as it doesn’t give them independence.
If Manusmriti was really anti-woman, then it
wouldn’t have given women the independence to
choose their husbands themselves. In this Shlok, the
duty of protecting the woman is given to father,
husband, son because men are physically more
powerful, but it doesn’t talk about snatching the
independence of women. To understand some
concepts we have to think regarding conditions of
that era, as conditions are different now.
Wife of Krishna, Satyabhama in the era of
Mahabharata and Kekai, wife of Dashrath in times
of Ramayan, played a vital role in the battle. Wife of
Shantanu, Satyawati, would help her husband by
sailing. If Satyabhama, Kekai, Satyawati were not
given independence then how did they participate in
the war or helped as a sailor? At that time the rules of
Manusmriti were followed by society. After reading
all of the above Shlokas, you must also be thinking
that Manusmriti is a woman supporting, not an anti-
woman book.
My anger turned into pride. And, I am proud of
my Sanatan Dharm, which thousands of years ago
was truly feminist and gave respect and
independence to women. At the time of Manusmriti,
there were proper arrangements for the social
security and independence of women, and to avoid
adultery, strict laws were implemented. Where in
some homes, women are seen as low and are not
given independence. There thousands of years ago
women were even allowed to make all important
decisions like marriage after all swayamvar is also a
part of Sanatan culture. After reading this Sanatan
Scripture, Manusmriti, I realized that this bad
condition of women is not due to Manusmriti, but is
due to us going away from it. One must wonder, why
and how we got away from Manusmriti?
To understand this, first, we have to understand
the history of our country. Before the foreign
invasion, in the medieval period, there was the
matriarchal rule, India was an advanced society
which was under the female rule, while at the same
time, females in America and Europe were just
slaves in political and social life. In Europe, only
males of high class were allowed to get an
education. In west countries due to superstition,
thousands of women were being accused of
witchcraft and were killed ruthlessly. In western
countries, females neither had social freedom nor
religious freedom, there, even god was considered
to be a man.
After foreign invasions by Mughals and
Britishers, social, political and religious states
started to get disturbed and it had a bad effect on
females. One religion said female to be man’s sixth
bone of ribcage and another considered women as a
sex slave to be fine. These religions considered
women only as an object of satisfaction, thus the
equal rights to women were never given. That’s the
reason why, Britain the country which ruled so
many countries, gave women the right to vote only
in 1918. Though America’s constitution is the oldest
but gave women the right to vote only in 1920 and
Saudi Arab gave in 2015. But as soon as India got
independence, women were equal voting rights in
the constitution.
Due to the long rule of Mughals and Britishers on
India, many social evils developed which women
had to face because Islam and Christianity never
gave women equal rights. Due to this, the rights of
Indian women also had a bad impact, social evils
like sati, child marriage, illiteracy of women, bad
conditions of widow started. Because foreign
invaders never gave women equal rights, they
rejected religious scriptures like Manusmriti and
spread fake narratives which declared Manusmriti
to be anti-women and due which even Dr B.R.
Ambedkar, without even reading, rejected
Manusmriti, but after reading it he realized his
mistake and accepted Manusmriti on the stage of
R.S.S. We got independence from Britishers, but we
couldn’t get independence from mental slavery, and
we still reject our religious texts without even
reading, and that’s what anti-India forces want.
India has two powers, first, its religion and
culture, and second, its youth power and if these get
together then it is impossible to defeat India.
Ancient Sanatan scriptures are very scientific and
laws given in them are still correct. Enemy powers
are attacking our scriptures to keep Indian youth
away from its ancient texts, and are trying to prove
them wrong so that youth doesn’t believe in them. If
Indian youth understands its history, it would be
hard to keep him away from religion and culture. So,
deliberately false narratives are created and spread.

And that is why Manusmriti is sometimes said to be
anti-Dalit and sometimes anti-women.
In a 2019 survey, Thomas Reuters declared India
to be the most unsafe country for women, and in this,
advice of only 500 experts was taken. And countries
like Saudi Arab, Pakistan and Afghanistan were said
to be safer than India. Maybe according to them, sex
slaves come in safety too.

of 6 women are at least once sexually assaulted in
their lifetime.
At times like this, the duties of females and youth
become double. Rather than believing in false
narratives about religion, we must try to study it and
go in-depth. If I would have also believed in all those
false narratives about Manusmriti and wouldn’t
have studied it, then I would have never come to
know about the wonderful law system and would
have never been as proud of my religion and culture
as I am now. For the upliftment of Indian women, it
is necessary that we return to the roots of our
religion and must follow the laws given in them and
give respect to women. And protect all women
around us. I request you all that, to first read our
scriptures and then form an opinion.

 Ignited Pens Ayonija Sita
Growing in a religious home, I always heard
that the king of Mithila, Janak was once ploughing
a field and the tip of his plough struck an earthen
pot, and he saw that there is a very beautiful girl
child in that pot. Janak was childless, so he, with
his wife, raised that girl as their own daughter. As
Sita grew up, there was an influx for the right life-
partner for her. Then Janak thought of Swayamvar
(Selecting one’s own husband) for Sita. Janak had
a very big and heavy bow of Shiva. He kept a
condition, that whosoever will tie the bow, will get
to marry Sita. Just a day before Swayamvar, rishi
Vishwamitra visited Mithila with Ram and
Lakshman and with the permission of rishi
Vishwamitra, both the brothers went to the garden
to pluck flowers for worship. There, Sita with her
friends came for Gauri pooja. That was the first
time when Ram and Sita saw each other and Sita
took him to be her husband in her mind. Along
with many other brave people, Ram and
Lakshman with rishi Vishwamitra were also
present in the swayamvar. The bow, which nobody
could even move, was lifted by Ram. He tied it and
as he was trying to tie it, it broke. Everyone
joyfully started raining flowers on him and Devtas
also started raining flowers from the sky. Sita put a
garland around Ram’s neck. And, that’s how Ram
and Sita got married. Something like this is also
shown in movies and plays.
When I joined Paavan Chintan Dhara
Ashram and started studying the Shastras, then I
got the habit of analysing our religion logically

you also know the story that I just wrote, but when
I read the authentic source for the information
regarding Ram-Sita through the Valmiki
Ramayan, many secrets started to unfold. I want to
tell all the readers that the Ramcharitramanas by
Tulsidas is a great poetic work, but it doesn’t come
in the category of history. Second thing, Tulsidas
is a contemporary of Akbar while Valmiki ji is of
Ram’s time and he is also a character of
Ramayana, he also gave Sita shelter in his ashram,
so it is clear that he gave the real facts.
First of all, I want to tell all of you that Janak is
not a name, it is rather a title given to the king of
Mithila. Just like ShriGuruJi earlier also told that
Indra is also a title, not a name.
Now about the birth of Sita… once Raavan
reached Himachal Pradesh while defeating all the
kings, amazed by the natural beauty of Himachal
Pradesh, he started to roam there. There he saw an
ascetic woman, who was very beautiful and
attractive. Upon looking at her, Raavan became
salacious and became anxious to know her. She
said that she is the daughter of Rishi Kushdhwaj,
and her name is Vedvati. Rishi Kushdhwaj wanted
Vishnu to marry her daughter, so he rejected all
offers from kings for her marriage. King of
Daityas, Shambhu, got angry by this and killed the
Rishi while he was sleeping. Mother of Vedvati
couldn’t handle this and gave her life in the funeral
fire of her husband. So, with the aim of completing
her father’s wish, she was trying to make Vishnu
happy by penance. Raavan tried to attract

Vedvati by boasting his wealth and power.
Vedvati got angry on this immoral action of
Raavan. Upon this, Raavan gripped her hair
and tried to misbehave with her. To save
herself, she cut off her hair and entered the fire
which she lighted by her penance. Before
entering she said that I don’t want to waste my
good energies in cursing you, so I’ll take birth
again and will become the reason of your death.
Arrogant Raavan even used to take revenue
from the Rishis. Rishis themselves used to do
bhiksha (Beg) to manage ashrams and
themselves, so how could they give revenue to
Raavan? Cruel Raavan would bleed Rishis by an
arrow and would collect their blood in a pot. He
thought that this way, he would have the blood of
these ascetics, which he would later use for
increasing his siddhis and powers. He came home
and handed over the pot to Mandodri and said to
her “just like we protect poison so that no one
consumes it, protect this like that too.” Upon
saying this, he went with other ladies to ‘Mandar’
or ‘Sahy’ mountain for a walk. Mandodri felt
insulted, that her husband who was away from her
for one year, came and went with other ladies. In
that grief, she drank that blood from that pot,
thinking it to be the poison pot. It didn’t kill
Mandodri, but she became pregnant by the Yog-
Bal (power of yog) and Tap-Bal (power of
meditation) blood of the Rishis. Mandodri
became worried and left that child (girl) in a water
body. Sita is said to be “Ayonija,” which means
someone who is not born normally, so I think
Mandodri gave birth to that child using some
surgical methods of Ayurveda.
It’s written in Ramayana that Raavan brought
home a “girl born of lotus.” Now we have to
understand this. When Mandodari left that girl in
the river, Raavan must have found her in a water
body where lotus was blooming so, in the
literature of that time they wrote ‘Born of Lotus.’

Raavan brought this beautiful small girl home,
one of his ministers there could study the signs of
small girls, and by which he predicted that if this
girl stays in this palace, she will become the
reason of Raavan's death. Now try to join links
here, what Raavan’s minister predicted turned out
to be true. This girl (who was Sita), who Raavan
kidnapped and brought to Lanka became the
reason for the death of Raavan. Upon hearing this,
Raavan put her in a pot and left her in a water body.
This same pot went to the land, where King Janak
was ploughing the field, for the yagya which was
done to bring rain in the kingdom. Thereupon,
finding the little girl, childless Janak adopted her.
This way, one who was Vedvati in the last birth,
was now Sita. Sita means- a line drawn on land by
a plough.
Now let’s talk about the marriage of Sita.
Janak’s family had a very glorified bow with
them, which was made by Vishwakarma, the
architect of Devtas, for the use of Lord Shiv. Once,
Shiv wanted to use that bow in anger. Upon
watching the destructive power of that bow,
everyone pleaded Shiv not to use it. Shiv agreed
and gave that bow to the Devtas. From the fear of
Raavan, devtas gave that bow to ancestors of
Janak, Devraat as a treasure, for its better security.
Since then, this bow was regularly worshipped in
the family of Janak. The bow was so heavy, that a
normal person couldn’t even move it. Once, while
cleaning the palace, 7-year-old Sita lifted that
bow and kept it at another corner. This event
was very astonishing for everyone. We have to
remember here that Sita was born of powers of
many rishis. Upon watching this power of Sita,
Janak also called her ‘Viryashulka’. He
thought her to be supernatural. That’s why he
was searching for someone as capable as her for
her marriage.
Once, King Janak was performing a Yagya,
when Vishwamitra along with Ram and
Lakshman arrived at Mithila. As soon as Janak
came to know about their visit, he went to meet
them and was eager to know about the boys, upon
watching them. Vishvamitra introduced the boys,
and Janak invited them for the next morning. Next
day, he invited Vishvamitra and both the boys for
proper hospitality.
Vishwamitra told Janak that those two boys
wanted to see the world-famous bow. Janak
brought that bow. That bow was kept in a big box
with eight wheels, which many muscular men
somehow carried. Janak told Rishi Vishvamitra,
how he has presented a condition of lifting this
bow among many kings, but none were
successful. He also said that Sita will marry the
person who will lift this bow. Ram got up and
watched that bow, and upon lifting it as he inclined
it a little to tie it, it broke from the middle. So the
marriage of Ram and Sita was finalised.
King Janak sent the message to King Dashrath
and invited him for the marriage. King Dashrath
along with his army and council arrived at Mithila.
There Janak again kept an offer of the marriage of
Lakshman with his younger daughter Urmila, and
marriage of Bharat and Shatrughan with
daughters of his younger brother Kushdhwaj,
Mandavi and Shrutkriti, which Dashrath readily
agreed to.
While the first meeting of Ram and Sita in the
garden is normally popular, Valmiki Ramayan
doesn’t mention it. Ram and Sita saw each other
for the first time at the time of marriage. Second
thing, there was no swayamvar for Sita in which
everyone was invited. Ram and Lakshman came,
they wished to see the bow, and Janak showed
them. Many people came before, but none was
successful in lifting it, and yes, the raining of
flowers was done by courtiers present there, not
by some Devtas sitting in clouds. Devtas don’t
live in clouds. Whosoever can give back to people,
and is working for the safeguarding and
enhancement of the planet is a Devta. So,
whenever you see Devtas standing on clouds,
loaded with ornaments, then close the T.V.
So, we saw how people misread and
misinterpret our scriptures and we all believe in
them, but it’s now time to read our scriptures by
ourselves to do justice with them.

The Truth behind Disrobing
There are two very popular incidents among
you all- one, Draupadi’s marriage and second, her
disrobing. This time, to think with a logical mind I
am going to put another. Understand the logic and
send us your logic and reactions, I’ll try my best to
give the answer.
Draupadi was carrying loads of her last birth,
single bride and wife of five, chose not to be the
wife of Karan, but got punished for that too. Let’s
think if she wouldn’t have said that, “I’ll not marry
a soot putra (someone whose mother or father is
not known)” so he would have definitely won her
by his skills, and was there any other way rather
than crushing his pride to stop him from
completing his challenge. If Draupadi would have
discriminated according to caste, she wouldn’t
have respected Vidhur, who was the son of a
servant.
Well, so that I don’t flow in emotions, I’ll come

defeated Pandavas in Chaucer (dice game), and
Yudhisthir, first lost his wealth, then his kingdom,
and then his brothers, and finally kept himself at
stake and lost. When Shakuni provoked them, he
kept Draupadi on stake and lost her, too. Upon
winning Draupadi, Duryodhan asked Vidhur to
bring her to the council. At that time, she was

menstruating and was not in proper clothing. She
displayed her disregard for coming to the council,
and gave the logic, how can a person who has
already lost himself, bet someone else? (she
asked Vidhur whether Yudhistir first lost himself
or Draupadi). When Vidhur came empty-handed
and kept Draupadi’s question in front of the
council, nobody had the answer.
Draupadi knew that Duryodhan wouldn’t give
up so easily, so she went to Dhritarashtra, on the
way Dushasan came and pulled her hair and
dragged her to the council. Draupadi handled her
clothes, and angrily looked at her husbands and
looked at all the elders, and raised the same
question. From Kauravs, only Vikaran said these
actions to be unjust, but Karan and Dushasan
made him silent. Karan told Vikaran that only a
prostitute would have five husbands and it is not a
sin to drag a prostitute in the council even if she is
not properly clothed. On hearing this, Duryodhan
showed Draupadi his thighs, because of which
Bheem took an oath to break it.
The coming story is going to be interesting. We
have always been hearing that as soon as the
disrobing of Draupadi started, Krishna made her
robe infinite. Dushasan became tired and gave up,
but when we study the chapters of Mahabharat, we
get to know that the robe of Draupadi was not
pulled. ‘Disrobing incident’ was later added to
Mahabharat. According to the Writer of ‘Bharat
Savatri Granth’, Dr Vasudev Sharad Agarwal, the
chapters of hand-written Mahabharat, doesn’t
mention the ‘Disrobing incident.’ The writer of
‘Mahabharat ke Kaaljayi Patra’, Shri Ramesh
Krishna ji, also believes that Draupadi was not
disrobed. Whosoever will read Mahabharata
completely and will join all the links, will also
come to know that, Draupadi was dragged by the
hair and was called a prostitute but was not
disrobed. I will present a conversation about some
special occasion from Mahabharata to you-
Draupadi complain to Krishna- after the incident
of Chaucer, Krishna ji met Pandavas and
Draupadi who were then living in the forest, and
Draupadi complaint to Krishna and said-
Means “Oh Madhusudan. I have neither a
husband, nor son, nor anyone close, neither
brother nor you.”
One thing to notice is that, if there was
disrobing of Draupadi and Krishna saved her, then
she would be thanking him and not complaining to
him by saying- | “Madhusudan, I have
neither you.” (Here, means neither you saved me)
we must understand, what was her complaint? Her
complaint was that Dushasan dragged me by her
hair into the council, and nobody saved me even if
you didn’t save me.
Draupadi clearly said-
Means, Madhusudan, Shri Krishna. I am a
pious and pure ascetic, still, I was dragged by the
hair, in front of five Pandavas.
There are two types of proofs- self and
provided. Provided proof, is the one which is
given by someone else. The self proof is the one
which is given by us. Let’s see what Krishna ji
himself says about the disrobing incident. Shri
Krishna addresses Yudhisthira and says-
“Majesty! If I was in Dwarka or near it, you
wouldn’t have been in this problem. I would have
been in the meeting even without an invitation. I
would have tried to stop him by explaining the
problems of gambling.”
Shri Krishna says- “If ministers would have
ignored my advice and tried to play poker
forcefully, then they all would have been killed by
me.”
Shri Krishna is saying –“if there would have
been either gambling would have been avoided or
Duryodhan would have died.” Just like none can
control water, when a dam breaks, similarly what
can I do when everything has gone south.

 Shri Krishna says-“Yudhishtir, In those days I
was not in Anantdesh (Gujarat, where Dwarka is
located), that’s why you had to face this problem”
“The hands who dragged me by the hair, must
be cut off”- When Shri Krishna went to
Hastinapur as a peace messenger, that time also
Draupadi says- “Shri Krishna. Whenever you try
to make an enemy an ally, remember Dushasan,
who dragged me by my hair. Would I ever get
peace, If I don’t see Dushasan’s hand being ripped
off?”
Even Devi Kunti didn’t mention the disrobing
incident- Devi Kunti shares her grief with
Krishna, even then the disrobing incident is not
mentioned by her. She said- “Hey Krishna. We
lost our kingdom, but that’s not the source of our
grievances. Even losing in gambling is not the
source. My sons are sent to the forest, even that is
not the source of our grievances, but my daughter-
in-law had to go between evil people in a single
cloth, is the source of this great grief.”
“My Daughter-in-Law (Draupadi), who
always believed in the Kshatriya Dharm, was
menstruating that time. Even on having so many
protectors, she couldn’t find herself a saviour.”

Bheem ripped off those hands, which pulled
the hair- Even while ripping those hands in battle,
Bheem said- “where are those hands, which
pulled the hair”, not the hands which disrobed.
When Bheem caught Dushasan, he got
goosebumps. Bheem says to Dushasan-
“Remember that day when you along with Karan
and Duryodhan called me buffalo.''
Purified by the Avbrat bath in the Rajsuya
yagya- By which hand did you pull the hair of
Queen Draupadi? Say it-“Today Bheemsen asks
from you, tell the answer. ”
Dushasan said “this is that hand, as broad as an
elephant’s trunk. By this hand, I pulled her hair
and dragged her in front of you and all the great
men of Kurukul.”
After killing Dushasan, while talking about the
strategies of Duryodhan, Bheem says- “I was
given poison in ‘Pramad Kotitirtha’ and was
thrown in a river, I was given a poison named
‘Kalkoot’, I was bitten by black snakes, they tried
to burn me in Lakshagraha, our kingdom was
taken by defeating us in gambling and we were
sent to live in forests.”
When Karan saw his death near in the battle, he
started bashing Dharm, Krishna told him while
reminding him of his sins- “Karan! Did these
thoughts of Dharm came to your mind, when you
along with Duryodhan and Dushasan, Brought
menstruating Draupadi, who was in improper
clothing, in front of the whole council?”-
Shri Krishna told Karan- “you insulted
Draupadi, who was in claws of Dushasan, in front
of the whole council (91/7), The way you looked
at Draupadi (91/8) and you, saying that ‘Pandavas
are destroyed forever, you must look for another
husband’(Karan Parv 91/9-10), where was dharm
at that time?” Also, Krishna ji doesn't mention the
disrobing incident. Even in the council of
Hastinapur, Krishna ji while scolding Duryodhan
said- “who else except you can do such a heinous
act of bringing your brother’s wife in front of the
whole council and do such unspeakable actions.”
Notice one thing, Krishna said ‘unspeakable
actions’ not disrobing.
So, we see that Draupadi was dragged in front
of the council by her hair. Karan called her to be
someone who is in control of many, told to choose
another husband. It was ordered to Disrobe
Pandavas along with Draupadi, but they were not.
Duryodhan made some bad signs towards
Draupadi by removing the cloth from his left
thigh. For avenging Draupadi’s insult, Bheem
took an oath to rip off Dushasan’s arms and
breaking Duryodhan’s thigh. It is a matter to think,
that if Bheem, Kunti or anyone else talks about
disarming, and avenging then would they say -
“Draupadi was pulled by her hair” or would they
have said “Hands, which disrobed Draupadi”.
Disrobing a lady is crueller than pulling her hair.
Neither Kunti nor Bheem was giving this reason.
It is also said that Draupadi took an oath that until
she washed her hair with the blood of Dushasan,
she’ll not tie her hair.
One must ponder, that why just focus on just
washing hair. If there was disrobing, then why not
bathe with blood? So after this, I totally believe
that the disrobing incident was added after the
Mahabharat. The reason could be that this incident
displays a great image of Krishna, so some
worshipers of Krishna must have added it, being
too emotional. One must think that if Krishna ji by
a miracle could save Draupadi, then he could have
also saved Abhimanyu from Chakravyuh, then
why did he send him there to die?
It is mentioned in Mahabharata that Draupadi
had very beautiful hair, and she was insulted upon
them, there is no doubt in that. By this incident
look at the intelligence and presence of mind of
Draupadi, when on warning by Draupadi,

Dhritrashtra thought that Paandavs would avenge
her, he gave her a boon and she asked for the
freedom of her husband Yudhistir. And on her
second wish, she got freedom of all the Pandavas.
Dhritrashtra gave a third boon (because he was
scared and could see the destruction of Kauravas,
so he was trying to fix their mistakes) on which
Draupadi said things from Shastras. She said- “A
Kshatriya woman is allowed only two boons, too
much greed can cause the destruction of Dharm. If
my husband gets freedom, then he’ll achieve
everything else himself.” Hereupon looking at the
intelligence of Draupadi, even Karan praised her.
It is for sure, that even in great grief and insult,
Draupadi didn’t lose her senses and got
everything back which was lost in gambling.

 Ignited Pens Who subjugated
women in India?
Today, when we talk about women empowerment,
the first image that comes to the mind is that of a
western woman. More so, because an Indian woman is
always portrayed as a meek and docile woman
suffering from patriarchy. Contradicting this image is
the presence of Indian women seen in all fields, be it
ISRO, ARMY, POLITICS, NASA or any field. How
many of the developing countries or, for that matter,
the developed ones are able to boast about this?
Usually, it’s believed that earlier, the women in the
Indian society were in a very pitiable state. They didn't
even have any right to education and were confined to
the house only. You can hear from the modern human
right activists saying that the condition of women has
only got better in the present times. In other words,
they used to live in a very dominant and downtrodden
state.
However, it's a completely contradictory story
when we read and research our ancient scriptures and
history. Here, I would like to give some points in
reference to ancient history, for you to visualize the
truth. It will also bring out the real picture, which is
purposely painted black, conspiring to malign the
reputation of India, under the garb of women
empowerment. Women had all rights to education
even in the Vedic Era.
Vedic Vahangmaya has clear indications of
women’s schools. According to this, there were two
types of girl students:
Sadyodvaha: those girl students who did a course
of seven years in Vedas, Grammar, Music, Verses,
Astrology etc. Only then, did they start a family life.
Brahmavadini: these students were engrossed in
Brahm contemplation, Dharma contemplation,
spiritual contemplation and philosophical rumination,
all their lives. Among these, some were married while

others were unmarried. Gargi was unmarried
Brahmvadini whereas Maitreyi, a married
Brahmvadini.
Rishi Panini has mentioned about special schools in
his “Chatryadaya Shaalayam.” In the Brahmacharya
Sukta of Atharva Veda, there’s a mention of
Brahmacharini girls. Many savvy women researched
on Mimansa-Shastra, Nyaya Shastra, and Vedas, all
their lives and Kashkritasni were the best Mimansak.
Gargi was a master in judiciary and Maitreyi in Vedas.
Vishwvara, Ghosha, Apala, Lopamudra, Romsha,
Shikta, Nivavri etc are Vedic Rishikas. A savvy woman
called Jayanti was a lifelong student and this is
mentioned in the religious philosophy of Jain
literature. There’s evidence of women’s education in
the 5th century BCE.
However, towards the culmination of the middle
centuries, the education of women started getting
eclipsed. The Mughal invaders, on the one hand,
demolished the educational institutions, and on the
other hand, severely attacked the rights of women
education; and the British destroyed whatever
remained. According to the data collected by the
British in the 18th century, women had sufficient
education in India (though the studies were done at
homes, due to Mughal terror).
Those days, women used to be tortured in Western
countries and didn't have equal rights in the patriarchal
society. During those days only the elite class men had
the right to get an education. In that case, how could
they tolerate the Indian women progressing? Jack
Dorsey, Twitter’s CEO in his visit to India mocked the

patriarchal society. But history is witness that even a
thousand years before the foreign invasion, the Indian
society had women in power. This social set up is still
visible in South India.
There was no institution of marriage prior to the
Vedic Era. A man and a woman had the freedom of
will; any man or woman could establish a relationship
with any other man or woman to produce offspring. It
was the main reason why most families followed a
matriarchal system, as there was no status of a father at
the beginning of the Creation.
Indian women like Kalpana Chawla, Sunita
Williams, Muthayya Vanitha and Ritu Karidhal have
not only ruled our hearts with their daredevil attitude
but also ruled the space. How many of us know that 15
great Indian women have been actively involved in the
drafting committee of our constitution? In fact, India
may have been the only country, the world over to have
so many women rulers. Rulers like Jijabai, Rani
Laxmibai, Rani Rasmoni were nationalists to the core
and have shown that a hand that rocks the cradle is also
capable of ruling the roost. Whether it was the
Mughals or the British, they were petrified of these
great ladies.
The Indian army, too, shows that women can lead
from the front. Since time immemorial, they have been
doing so. The greatest example is Kaikeyi who was the
charioteer for King Dashrath and rode him to victory
with her grit and strategy. Satyabhama helped Krishna
in assassinating Narkasur.Not so long ago, Subhash
Chandra Bose made an entire regiment of all women
called “Rani Jhansi Regiment,” an integral part of the
AZAD HIND FAUJ. Though lakhs of people wanted
to join this, among the first few, were 17 adolescent
girls who came forward to join this army and exhibited
utmost courage and sacrifices. There were also newly
married brides who gave away all their jewellery to
support the AZAD HIND FAUJ. The women’s love for
their country and patriotism was evident by this, thus
showing that Indian women were not lagging behind
in any arena.

The contribution of Jijabai, Maa Sharda, Maa
Bhubneshwari, Maa Vidyavati and Maa Prabhabati
cannot be overlooked at all. Our nation will forever
remain indebted to them for their selfless and
nationalistic upbringing in giving us leaders like-
Shivaji, Swami Vivekanand, Bhagat Singh and Netaji
Subhash Chandra Bose.
The enemies are trying their best to malign India by
calling it a “rape state” and so on. If we get into the
details, most of the Islamic countries give no freedom
to their women to report any case of rape. The woman
has to face dire consequences if at all she musters the
courage to report a rape. Laws against rape have been
stringent since time immemorial to deter the criminals.
Hence there were negligible rape cases. Even during
the Ramayan and Mahabharat era, though the women
enjoyed complete freedom to live with anyone they
liked, they didn't approve of their freedom being
abused and if it ever happened, it would result in
massive wars. The wars used to be cooked up, as a
woman wouldn't let it go. “ I will see you.” She had this
feeling of vengeance. The best example of this is Maa
Durga who herself killed a rapist king- Mahisasur.
Draupadi brought all hell lose at Duryodhan’s
sinister remark, insinuating that she should sit on his
left side (become his wife). Although she wasn't
disrobed or raped, she saw to it that all these lecherous
people were not spared. She let her hair loose to
continuously remind Bheem that her humiliation had
to be avenged at all costs. She made Arjun continue
practising weaponry so that he wouldn't miss the
slightest chance to kill her enemies. It was the same
case with Maa Sita who saw to it that Ravan was killed.
Even during Mahabharata times, parents were so
modern and asked their daughters if they wanted to get
married or not. Sanatan people were always modern
and they have even changed themselves with the tide.
Sanatani women were truly modern with deep in
rooted moral values and would have open discussions,
would wear whatever they wanted. The Sanatan
women were made of sterner stuff, were gritty,
dedicated, apart from being educated and righteous.

Ingredients for Batter: Ingredients for Tempering

 2 cups of Rice - 200gm and Garnishing:
 1 cup of Tur Dal - 100gm  4 tablespoon of Oil
 1 cup of Moong Dal - 100gm  1 tablespoon of sesame seeds
 1 cup of Chana Dal - 100gm  1 tablespoon of mustard seeds
 1 cup of Urad Dal - 100 gm  7-8 curry leaves
 1 cup of Masoor Dal - 100gm  Coriander leaves
 1 green chilly
 1-inch ginger
 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
 1 teaspoon of salt or as per taste
 1 pinch of Eno for softness
 3 tablespoon of curd/buttermilk

 Method:
Wash and soak all the Dal and rice overnight for at least 6-7 hours
Drain the water and grind the mixture into a thick paste by adding chopped green chillies
and ginger into the mixture
Put the batter into a bowl and keep it aside for 4-6 hours for fermenting
Once fermented add turmeric, Eno, yoghurt and salt as per taste. Mix it well into a thick
consistent batter.
Now for steaming the Dhokla batter, grease the plates with oil and pour the batter into the
greased plates. Now put the plates inside the steamer. If you don't have the steamer you
can use a Pan.
Cover the lid and let it cook on high heat for 25-30 minutes.
Once done set aside the steamed dhoklas to cool down and cut them into the desired
shape.
Heat oil in a pan for temper with mustard seeds, sesame and curry leaves. Saute for a few
seconds and pour this tempering over steamed dhoklas.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with green chutney or ketchup.

say about women?
Christianity is the largest followed religion in the
world. Having more than 2 billion followers, it has a
huge share of admirers as well as critics. From time
to time many critics have generally criticized
Christianity for historical inaccuracy, the
mistranslation of the Bible, inconsistencies within
Bible, unfulfilled prophecies, crusades and history
of colonization, violence and slavery. But the belief
of male God, God sending his son (not daughter) to
save mankind, all 12 disciples of Jesus being male
and men-centred stories invited severe criticism
from feminist groups. In this article, we shall the
portrayal of women in the Bible and the treatment of
women by the Church.
Women in the Bible
One of the foremost popular stories in the Bible is
the story of Adam and Eve. As per the Book of
Genesis, God first created Adam and placed him in
the Garden of Eden. God tells Adam to eat freely of
all the trees in the garden, except for a tree of the
knowledge of good and evil. But God was not happy
seeing Adam alone. As per the Book of Genesis 2:
18: The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man
to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
Thus God created ‘helper’ Eve from the rib of
Adam. But later Eve gets influenced by the serpent
(Satan). She eats the forbidden fruit and shares it
with Adam too. When God comes to know about it;
God curses Adam, Eve and the serpent. As per Book

of Genesis 3: 16: To the woman he (God) said, “I will
make your pains in childbearing very severe; with
painful labour, you will give birth to children. Your
desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over
you.”
This curse is further mentioned in ‘1 Timothy 2’
verses 11 to 15: A woman must learn in quietness and
full submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to
teach or to exercise authority over a man; she is to
remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, and then
Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the
woman who was deceived and fell into
transgression. Women, however, will be saved
through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love,
and holiness, with self-control.
There are various other verses in the Bible which
are frequently considered misogynist. But it’s not
that women are only portrayed negatively in the
Bible. The Bible also has stories of various heroic
deeds of women. In the first book of Exodus, we find
the story of Shiphrah and Puah. The Egyptian king
was worried about the rising population of Israelites.
He ordered two Hebrew midwives Shiphrah and
Puah to kill all the male Hebrew children at the time
of birth. But both of them were believers of God and
thus violated Pharaoh’s command by not killing the
male children. God rewarded them for their
rightfulness.

 In the Bible, there are few women named Mary.
But two of them have special mention: Virgin Mary
(Mother of Jesus Christ) and Mary Magdalene.
Christian believe Virgin Mary as a perfect example
of complete surrender to God. Despite possible
social stigma, she gave birth to Jesus. She was
courageous enough to watch her son crucified and
faithful enough to see him rise from the dead. There
are various rumours on the other Mary, Mary
Magdalene. Some theories claim that she was a
prostitute, while few believe that she was the wife
of Jesus. The Bible says that Jesus saved her by
casting seven demons out of her. After that she
became an adherent follower of Jesus, she
helplessly witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus. But
her faith was rewarded, after the resurrection, Jesus
appears first to Mary Magdalene.
Along with these, there are many other women
mentioned in the Bible who played a significant
role. Few names are Rahab (A prostitute who saved
two Israelites spies), Huldah (The only female
prophet mentioned in the books of King), Sarah
(Who believed in God and gave birth to Issac at the
age of 90), Delilah (A seductress who was
responsible for the death of Samson), Jezebel (The
Vengeful Queen). So the Bible has mixed (both
positive and negative) stories of women.
The Church and the Women
If the Bible is theory then the Church is
practical. Let’s see the treatment of the Church
towards women.
Patriarchal Roots of Church: For nearly three
centuries after the crucifixion of Jesus, Christianity
failed to influence the masses. In 313 AD, Roman
Emperor Constantine I issued the Edict of Milan,
officially legalizing Christian worship. And in 380
AD under Theodosius I, the Roman Empire
officially adopted Christianity as its state religion.
This marked the rise of Christianity in Europe. But
the seeds of the Church were sown in the soil of
patriarchy. The priest was called “Father.” The

Pope was referred to as “Holy Father.” The word
“Pope” itself comes from the Greek language
Pappas (meaning Father in Greek). The title
“Abbot” comes from the ancient term “Abba” (i.e.
Father).
This historical long-standing prejudice of the
Church against women is still visible. Even today
women are deliberately kept out of positions of
authority and responsibility reserved exclusively for
men. Power of the Church in the Middle Ages: After
the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD,
the Church became the power centre. Like the
Roman Empire, they had their capital in Rome. And
they had their own emperor – ‘The Pope’
The Church had complete control over the
people. Even Kings and Queens were meant to
subject themselves to the Church. The Church
influenced every important decision in Europe. For
example: During the crusades, Popes promised
eternal salvation to those who fought in the name of
Jesus. The biggest victims of this absolute power of
Church were heretics, atheist, Jews and women. Of
all the recognized saints between 500 AD and 1200
AD, only 15% were women. Women’s place in the
clergy was restricted to the nunnery.
The Witch-Hunting: But the worst atrocities of
the Church on women was the “Witch-Hunting.”
Although in the 13th Century, Pope Gregory IX
authorized the killing of witches. It was the period
from the 1550s to 1660s which saw maximum
witch-hunting. Burning and hanging were the most
popular forms of execution for accused witches.
Killing accused witches were in line with the Bible.
Exodus 22:18 says: “You must not allow a sorceress
(witch) to live”
The standard Inquisition procedures of witches
were as follow: Accused witches were stripped
naked. All their body hair was shaved off and then
pricked. It was believed that witches had a "devil's
mark" on their body, which could be detected by
sharp prodding. Red-hot pincers were applied to
their breasts and private organs. If the ‘celibate’
priest interrogating the witches were to become
aroused, it was believed that the ‘sinful’ desire did
not originate in him. It was the accused witch
seducing him with her black magic. Then the
woman was tortured to an extent where she would
eventually accept this allegation. This acceptance
would then led to further rounds of questions and
torture.
The most famous manual on witch-hunting:
‘The Malleus Maleficarum’ (Hammer of Witches)
says: “All witchcraft comes from carnal lust, which
is in women insatiable.” Nothing can be a better
example of misogyny than this. Interestingly in the
medieval period, many women (accused of
witchcraft) were simply following their pagan
traditions. It had nothing to do with Satan because
the concept of Satan is a creation of Christianity
and other Abrahamic religions. Also, there was a
strong correlation between a woman's social status
and her chances of being accused of evil. Many
women were demonized because they refused to
conform to patriarchal structures. Any woman who
challenged the prevalent Church’s patriarchal
order was at the risk of being suspected of a witch.
It is estimated that around 40,000 to 60,000 were
executed as witches
Sexual abuse: Till the start of the 20th century,
the marriage of the rapist and his victim was seen as
an appropriate 'resolution' of the situation. In the
ancient and medieval Christian world, the virginity
of a girl was highly prized. Thus a rape victim had a
little chance of marrying and she was forced to
marry her rapist. This was in line with Biblical
Book of Deuteronomy 22:28-29:: If a man finds a
girl who is a virgin, who is not engaged, and seizes
her and lies with her and they are discovered, then
the man who lay with her shall give to the girl’s
father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall become
his wife because he has violated her; he cannot
divorce her all his days. In such cases, the consent
of the victim girl for marriage was not needed. The
man was obligated to marry her by paying her
parents a dowry to settle the matter. Sexual abuse
within the Church was/is also common. Since all
power vested in the hands of men, the Church
witnessed sexual abuse of nuns and other religious
women by male priests since ancient times. In
February 2019, Pope Francis had to come out in
open and accept the widespread and rampant sexual
abuse (including sex slavery) of nuns at the hands of
Catholic priests within the premises of the Church.
Divorce and Remarriage: In the last few
decades the Christian society across the globe
witnessed a sharp increase in divorce rates. Today in
the US and various European countries, people
marry multiple times in their lives. Many feminist
groups consider this as a sign of women
empowerment. But divorce is against the core belief
of Christianity. Most of the Christian denomination
believe marriage as a lifelong covenant. But they
have varied views on divorce and remarriage. The
Catholic Church prohibits divorce but allows
annulment under a thin set of circumstances. The
Eastern Orthodox Church permits divorce and
remarriage in church in certain strict circumstances.
And most Protestant churches discourage divorce
except as a last resort. Remarriage is also allowed
only if the divorce was on biblical grounds.
There are various verses in the Bible, which are
often criticized by feminist groups. For example in
Matthew 5: 31-32, Jesus says: It has been said,
'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a
certificate of divorce.' But I tell you that anyone who
divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality,
makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who
marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Contraceptive and Abortion: In the modern
Christian world most of the views on contraceptives
and abortion come from the Church and not the
bible. In the past, most of Church did not favour
contraceptives and abortion. But the Church

attitude started changing after the 20th century.
Today the Orthodox Church discourages
contraceptives, while liberal church allows it for
married couples only. And, since sexual intercourse
outside of marriage is against the principle of
Christianity. In such cases, the Church considers
abstaining from sex a morally better option than
using artificial contraception.
Conclusion
So we can conclude that the attitude of the Church
towards women was never favourable. The Orthodox
Church always treated women as inferior to men.

Many restrictions were imposed on women. A
woman was considered as husband’s property. Even
the 16th century ‘reformist’ Martin Luther (Founder
of Protestant sect) declared: “Woman should
remain at home, sit still, keep house, and bear and
bring up children.” and “If a woman grows weary
and, at last, dies from childbearing, it matters not.
Let her die from bearing; she is there to do it.”
Elizabeth Cady Stanton (Feminist of 19th
century) rightly said: "The Bible and the Church
have been the greatest stumbling blocks in the way
of woman's emancipation."

say about women?
Let’s not shy away from the fact that the moment
we talk about 'Women in Islam', words like
oppression and subjugation comes in our mind
especially when we talk countries like Syria, Iraq,
Pakistan etc. Even in India, the image of Muslims
women is not that of freedom and liberty. But who
are we to decide whether women in Islam are
oppressed or not. We are here just to state some facts
along with relevant verses from the source of Islam
i.e Quran. And we will leave it for you to decide the
condition of women in Islam. And before I start, I
would like to remind you that we are not here to give
you a comparative analysis of how every religion
treats women or how one religion is better for
women than others. All these conclusions are left for
you to decide.
We consider women above all the religions and it
is our duty to raise the voice for women and against
women discrimination, be it any community,
religion or country. Women all over the world are
struggling for equal status and equal rights. But a
question arises, what can be a possible reason behind
this condition of women? The answer lies in the fact
that women are comparatively physically weaker
gender than men. Please mark my words, I said
"physically weaker gender" not weaker gender. So
because of this physical aspect, most men have a
tendency to control or dominate women. To make a
balance, every religion puts some restrictions as
well as ideals to be followed by its believers. So this
is why every religion teaches what is right or what is
wrong. And here the clash between women rights
and Islam arises.
The following are some of the examples

targeted for allowing husbands to use force against
women. Quran (4:34) says- "the good women are
therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has
guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear
desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in
the sleeping-places and beat them". Now in the 21st
century, it stands completely against modern
contemporary standards. We accept the fact that
even non-Islamic people use violence against their
wife. But in this case, people justifying beating their
wife referring to this verse of the Quran.
No Right to divorce to Women- In Islamic law, a
husband gets the right to divorce by default. Women
have no right to give divorce. Although, people
claim that "khula" is a right of women to get a
divorce but people need to understand that "khula" is
an agreement, not a right. A woman needs to offer a
consideration (amount) to the husband. It is more
like purchasing a right to divorce by the wife. In
India, thanks to the legislature, Muslim women for
the first time in the year 1939 got the right to divorce
through - Dissolution of Muslim marriages act,
1939.
Polygamy- A Muslim can marry, in Islamic law,
is allowed to marry up to 4 women at a time.
Quran(4:3) clearly says- "man can marry women of
her choice in two, three or four." We accept the fact
that polygamy might be relevant 1400 years ago but
in the 21st century its uses are almost nil and misuses
are countless. Now polyandry might not be a wise

choice but yeah there is a need to make equal law
for both the gender.
Inheritance- Although it was one of the first
religions to give the right to inheritance to women,
we appreciate this fact, but in reality, it
discriminates between male and female. From the
starting, this right was partial as the Quran (4:176)
says- "the male shall have the equal of the portion of
two females." Well, that means a woman will
inherit 1/2 of the property which man inherits. This
stands unjust and a change is required.
Court testimony- The modern society
considers women as reliable as a man but as per
Islamic law, it is not so. Quran (2:282) says- "and
call to witness, from among your men, two
witnesses, and if two men are not there, then a man
and two women". This proves that for testimony in
Islam, the reliability of two women witnesses is
equal one man. We need to give up the old beliefs as
there is no such proven fact that one gender is more
reliable than the other.
The superiority of men- The Quran has one
more statement which proves to be discriminatory
women. Quran (2:228) says- "All women have
rights similar to those of women but the men are a
degree above them." This is one of the main reasons
that a Muslims man tends to dominate women. This
also leads women to inferiority complex as Islamic
law considers men a degree above women.
Nikah Halala- The very controversial nikah
halala finds its place in the Quran too. Quran
(2:230) says that - "And if he has divorced her then
she is not lawful to him afterwards until[after] she
marries a husband other than him and the second
husband divorces her. The consequences of this are
that even if a husband gives talaq in anger and
regrets giving divorce, then also he won't be able to
remarry her until she marries some other man and
consummates that marriage. Here the interesting
point is that now if she wants to remarry her

previous husband then she'll have to wait until the
subsequent husband divorces her as she herself has
no right to give divorce.
Wife as property- Men is Islam not only
dominate women but they feel that this is their right
to have control over them. But why is it so? The
answer lies in Quran (2:223) say- "Your wives are a
place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your
place of cultivation however you wish and put forth
[righteousness] for yourselves". Now saying that a
wife is a piece of land and a husband has the right to
do whatever he thinks right for himself gives too
much authority to a husband. This authority has
been misused by many husbands and is one of the
major cause of marital rape in the Islamic
community.
As of now, we have not gone through the Sharia
law otherwise things will get worse. Now the
question arises whether those verses of the Quran
have any relevance or effect in the 21st century? The
answer lies in the fact that the world came across
incidents like:
Muslim women being stoned to death by the
Muslim community.
Muslim women being forces to wear the burqa.
Muslim women are not allowed to marry a non-
Muslim.
Increasing no. of cases of domestic violence.
Cases of rape by mobs like Taharush Jamai.
Women not being allowed to enter the majority
of the Mosques.
Incidents like these depict how patriarchy has
settled itself deep inside the mind of Muslim men.
Change is the need of the time, so we accept that a
change of perception is required, to uplift the status
of woman and recognise the role of a woman, in a
majority of the societies, communities and religions
all over the world. We need to make this world a
better place for all human beings.

or the mentality of men!
Rape is a cognizant procedure of terrorizing by
which all men keep women in a condition of fear. It
has nothing to do with men ailing in ethics looking
for sexual satisfaction; rather, rape is a creation by
man to keep up an arrangement of mental
predominance over women. Men are instructed by
the common chauvinist ethos in Western culture to
utilize rape as an instrument to strike fear into the
hearts of women.
His forcible entry into her body, despite her
physical protestations and struggle, becomes the
vehicle of his victorious conquest over her being, the
ultimate test of his superior strength, the triumph of
his manhood. Man’s discovery that his genitalia
could serve as a weapon to generate fear must rank
as one of the most important discoveries in
prehistoric times, along with the use of fire and the
first crude stone axe.
Rape is not about sexual orientation or sexual
desire. It is an act of power and control in which the
victim is brutalized and humiliated. Accordingly, the
act of rape is actually normalized in a Western
patriarchal society: “Men rape because they have
learned that rape is acceptable and normal
behaviour.” How come then, that the size of a
woman’s dress becomes an invitation for all and

statistics available in India, on an average 106 rapes
are reported every day, out of which 40 per cent of
the victims are minors. It is even more shocking that
in nearly 95 per cent of the cases, rapes are
committed by none other than the relatives and
family members, partners or people who are known
to the victims. Rapes are a universal occurrence,
they are not restricted to any particular country,
region, race, caste or class. They happen as much
among the poor, rural, illiterates as among the rich,
urban and the so-called elites. These rapists are just
the ones who think that it’s ok to rape a woman
because for them, they hold a better and a higher
position in the society and they always have an upper
hand on the ladies or girls or kids whomsoever they
know. If it would have been about how short the
victim’s dress was then why are 3 months babies
raped, old women raped, girls in sarees raped?? It’s
all about the mentality of men and the so-called
“young boys” who are the part of the patriarchal
society and have grown up learning that it’s fine to
have non-consensual sex and to beat women and to
treat them as objects because this is what their
fathers or forefathers have been doing with their
wives.
Why only the girls are kept under the doubt that
she was raped because she wore alluring clothes and
she attracted guys and sexually aroused them? In

spite of this, the men of our society shall learn that it
is the choice of a woman to wear whatever she wants
and they should know to respect each and every
woman they see, irrespective of the fact whether
they know her or not.
The society has no answer when a boyfriend or
the lover rapes his own partner in the name of
intimacy and the girls have to be quiet because they
are the ones who will be questioned as to why they
indulged in such kind of affairs and will be blamed
that it’s their fault. These girls even don’t know that
the boys commit rape and it’s not intimacy or token
of love if it’s not consented.
We have instances where men sexually abuse
animals. Should we clothe animals too? Another oft-
cited reason is makeup. Rapists allege that women
apply heavy makeup especially lipstick to lure men.
How do you then explain the rapes of minors,
infants, old and aged women, women suffering from
unsoundness of mind, women in comma or those
hospitalized with severe ailments? What could they
have done to catch a rapist’s fancy? Earlier men kept
sex slaves, now they hire escort girls. Prostitution is
the world’s oldest profession. Sugar daddies- “I will
sponsor you” is a common western concept fast
gaining in popularity in our sub-continent. Wife
swapping is another notorious fact. People rape their
daughters, sisters and sometimes, even mothers.
What causes such extreme depravity? The
pathology is an obsession for sex.
Rapists have all sorts of excuses and
justifications for their acts. The reasons quoted are
so diverse that it is nearly herculean to generalize.
Rapes are committed by political leaders, teachers,
guardians, father, brother, relatives, neighbours,
friends, acquaintances or even strangers. In this
patriarchal and gendered world, rape is a
stigmatized crime wherein aspersions are cast on the
victim instead of the accused. It is also very easy to
put the blame on the woman for bringing out the
beast in a man. There is a justification that she

should be punished for arousing him. After all, if
there were no women, who would men rape? So
maybe it is the very existence of women that needs
to be blamed for turning our holier-than-the men
into rapists.
Sex requires a man to be aggressive, he feels
superior and in control. It is all about the need to
control and assert power. Rapes are committed with
impunity during wars. Husbands rape their wives
and seek to justify it as a means of punishment to her
or to put her in her place or simply to vent out their
frustrations. Spurned suitors, jilted lovers and all
those who believe the woman to be theirs cannot
take no for an answer and force sex to punish or
avenge. People rape their girlfriends, live-in
partners, friends and acquaintances. There is
patriarchy fueled male desire to dominate. Men are
scared of a woman’s sexuality, so that needs to be
suppressed. She evokes the need in them, thus there
is a dislike for the passive yet undeniable power that
she yields over them.
There are rape myths-
“No means yes; a lady never says yes”
“Women like to be taken by force”
“Women who drink are an easy lay”
“outgoing women like to experiment in all areas
including sex” etc.
By perpetuating such myths, women have been
deprived of their voice or agency to exercise their
choices. Most of the time, the accused are not even
aware that what they have done amounts to rape.
They admit to forced sex but refuse to accept it as an
act of rape. Then, there are date rapes: Boyfriends
who don’t know when to stop because they fail to
comprehend the concept of consent.
Women are viewed as commodities, meant to be
consumed and ravished. Sexually obsessed rapists
don’t consider women as human beings but as an
object that can be violated with impunity.
People who try to portray clothing as the main
cause of rape are trying to hide the crime. This is a
result of a deep-rooted patriarchal mentality. Just
because a person is sexually aroused, it does not give
him the right to attack anyone in sight. Restraint
needs to be taught and practised, even when a person
is sexually excited they need to keep this in mind.
The more we talk about clothes, the more we
move away from the enormity of the crime. How are
clothes to blame if anyone from infants and 70-year-
old women is getting raped? How about those men
who are raped by other men? Is it also because of
their clothes?
We should be criminalizing the act of rape,
instead, we are sexualizing it. Women are not being
treated as human beings but as sexual products. It
has been established in our society that every
woman is a sexual object and that men should feel
attracted to them. This is not a sign of mental
instability, this is widespread distasteful behaviour.
Can no one control their urges? You have the urge
and you simply go ahead and assault a person. What
is the point of all this modern education and moral
teaching if people are inclined to behave this way?
Many studies done in the West has revealed that
clothes are not the cause of rape; it is a matter of
mentality. Not every man is a rapist. A special type
of people commit crimes like this. We have
established civilization; we are not cave dwellers
and forest dwellers anymore. There was a time on
this planet when morals did not exist but now it’s not
like that people are well educated and learned and
still, this kind of power crime takes place, it is
saddening for us as it is degrading the Indian society
who is worshipping Goddesses but are not giving
due respect to women in their society.
Education, gender sensitization and legal
awareness are indispensable to control rapes. We
need better policing and CCTV mapping of desolate
areas. Cognitive restructuring is needed to remove
the myths clogging our minds. Behavioural and
emotional intelligence is very different from
academic intelligence. We need to question the
accused and not the victim, the time of rape or the
dress she wore. Society needs to stigmatize the
perpetrator instead of the victim. Sensible
sensitivity is essential to counter this crime which is
rightly classified as the ‘worst crime against
womanhood’.

IN THE INTEREST OF WOMEN IN INDIA
While recognizing the national problems of
India, Swami Vivekanand said. “there are two great
evils, trampling on the women and grinding the poor
through caste restrictions.”
Nation-Building is a task that is carried on the
shoulder of its citizens irrespective of their caste,
gender, or religion. When we talk about the
demographics in India, women constitute around
48.4 % of the total population which is almost half of
India, which, in turn, means that the process of
effective and efficient nation-building is not
possible without the equal and constant efforts of the
other shoulder i.e. women.
The women in Indian Society occupies a very
vital and vulnerable place. They have been glorified
as the mother, the Creator in Vedas, who gives life
and even worshipped as a Goddess. Now, leaving
behind the ideal situation, let us ask some questions
to ourselves. Had women in our country never been
subject to ill-treatment? Were they not always
deprived of their actual rights? Have they not been
subjected to gender discrimination?
In order to achieve the above-mentioned goal of
effective and efficient nation-building, there ought
to be three particulars that need to be examined:
Firstly, the capability of women in India,
Secondly, the opportunity that is being provided
by society,
Thirdly, the efforts being made to achieve the
goal.

Women in India are, actually without any dispute,
the most vulnerable section of the society as far as
their safety and security are concerned. In order to
ensure gender equality, our constitution makers
enshrined the principle of equality under the
Fundamental rights sections of the Constitution.
Other than this, there have been various legislative
measures been taken by our Parliament, time to
time, through the enactment of various laws for
providing better protection to women. The major
issues as addressed by the Indian Parliament through
the enactment of laws in order to ensure the
protection of women and enable gender equality are
as follows:
Dowry System used to be a norm in the Indian
marriage system, which was mainly due to the lack
of economic independence of women and the taboo
towards divorce and thus resulted in torturing of the
bride. This was also a reason for female infanticide
in India. The constant efforts of social activists and
leaders led the lawmakers to enact Dowry
Prohibition Act, 1961 through which giving or
taking of dowry was made a punishable offence. It
brought about a major change in our society wherein
women themselves raised complaints about the ill-
tradition and encouraged others to take a stand.
In order to protect the rights of women during
the period of pregnancy and after childbirth, the
Indian Lawmakers enacted the Maternity Benefits
Act, 1961. The Act regulates the employment of
women and maternity benefits as mandated by law.
The benefits include maternity leave, nursing
breaks, medical allowances, etc if a woman
employee has worked in an organization for a period
of at least 80 days during 12 months preceding the
date of her expected delivery.
Women’s Reproductive rights were never given
preference in India and thus is not deemed to be legit
before 1971, as it was made a Punishable Offence
under section 312 of Indian Penal Code. But as soon
as the Indian Government realized the importance of
these rights through International Deliberation, it
introduced the formulation of the new abortion law
at the recommendation of Shantilal Shah committee
which was termed as Medical Termination of
Pregnancy Act, 1971, wherein Women’s
reproductive rights were recognized. [The further
amendment to this act was introduced in the
parliament this year and is pending.]
 The concept of wage-labour became
increasingly formalized during the Industrial
Revolution, women were often paid less than their
male counterparts for the same labour, whether for
the explicit reason that they were women or under
another pretext. The demand for equal pay for equal
work increased in the 19th century during trade
unionism in the UK. After various worldwide
developments in this regard, the Indian Parliament
enacted the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 in order
to break through the unjustified differentiation of
wages on the basis of gender.
Gender concern in media is a serious concern
today. The continued obscene depiction of women,
as well as the indecent and derogatory portrayal of
women in the media, have been agitating the mind of
Civil Society. In simple terms, the depiction in any
manner of the figure of a woman, her form or her
body or any part thereof would amount to indecent
or derogatory representation if it has the tendency to
present women as a sexual object or to present
women as a sexual commodity for man’s pleasure,
or the tendency to glorify woman’s subordination to
man as an attribute to womanhood, etc. In order to
keep a check on such advertisements, the legislators
formulated the Indecent Representation of
Women(Prevention) Act, 1986.
The issues of Women in India have never been
raised exclusively by any major organization. In
order to provide a statutory voice for the exclusive
and direct redressal of the problems, the Parliament
enacted National Commission for Women Act,
1990. The act established a National Commission
for women with the primary objective of advising
the government on all policy matters affecting
women and representing the rights of women in
India.
Till the year 2015, the remedies available to
women in case of domestic violence were limited.
Either they go to civil court for a decree of divorce or
institute a criminal case under sec 498A but no
proceeding was capable of providing emergency
relief to the victim. As a result of which the women
prefer to suffer in silence. Also, the act of violence
committed by other relatives was not recognized.
Having regard to such condition, Parliament
enacted The Protection of Women (From Domestic
Violence) Act, 2005.
 The emergence of Globalization and
Modernization has raised the questions on Women’s
safety at the workplace and has been a very serious
concern in the last two decades. The courts in India
have been frequently hearing cases wherein a
woman employee was being sexually harassed by
the people working with her at her workplace and no
redressal platform existed to listen to the complaint
made by her. It was either due to the reason that the
accused himself held a dominant position at the
workplace or the organization does not want to harm
its own reputation by taking action against the
accused employee. In order to define sexual
harassment at the workplace and to establish a
proper redressal system, the Sexual Harassment of
Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and
Redressal) Act, 2013 was enacted.

As per my opinion, the laws and regulations can
only act as a catalyst in order to curb crimes
committed. It is evident from history that a simple
law cannot stop people from committing a crime
until and unless he is well educated (here does not
mean formal education but awareness) in that
matter. Thereafter the question arises if laws cannot
actually put a full stop to such issue then who can?
The answer is very simple, it all starts from “I.” I will

our Indian women are capable of doing it as any in
the world.”

“Sanatan Women” — a social media platform.
“Sanatan Women” is a group of women who are
constantly involved in safeguarding the interests of
the Nation and Dharma. On 16th November 2019,
this power-packed wing of Paavan Chintan Dhara
Ashram successfully concluded Swaraj Sabha with
the Sanatan Women Summit held at Modern College
of Law. Constituting an integral part of Swaraj
Sabha, Sanatan Women provides women across the
country a platform to get together and fight
misconceptions against their religion. This is an
important initiative to avoid baseless distortions and
maintain overall peace and harmony.
ShriGuruji Pawan Sinha ji, a spiritual preceptor
and educationist, also the founder of Paavan Chintan
Dhara has entrusted women with this platform, so
they can positively utilize the power of social media
within the confines of their homes and at the same
time, promote their Dharma. The program
emphasized on the need of women, to get into the
dual role of a compassionate, affectionate mother as
well as ‘Chandi’ who is capable of making the
enemies of her country lick the dust.
The revered speakers included Dr Kavita
Asthana (Secretary, Paavan Chintan Dhara Ashram)
who said that Maa Durga is the most important and
the most ancient Sanatan Woman. She emphasized
on the fact that Ashram is a training centre and if they
weren’t there we wouldn't have got people like
Chanakya, Sri Ram or Shri Krishna who had all
received training at the ashrams. Dr Kavita Ashthana
told the audience that the Paavan Chintan Dhara
Ashram trains the youth and contributes in Nation

spreading knowledge. The objective of Swaraj
Sabha was also stressed as it not only gives you
thoughts but also gives you a direction. Dr Kavita
also stressed on the fact that social media has
become a battleground and the enemy can be within
us. All women can contribute to nation-building by
taking the children to places like army hospitals
where they can be inspired; by discouraging
husbands to refrain from corruption and by not
bunking work or their assigned tasks.
Mrs Rama Tyagi, (Wife of a gallant soldier—a
Veer Chakra awardee) comes from an army
background at her paternal as well as her in-laws.
She shared her experience when her mother used to
inculcate patriotism while cooking. She even talked
about how she helped the labourers to join work by
opening a crèche for their children, which was first
of its kind and Doordarshan had telecast about this
school umpteen times. This was her way of
contributing to the nation so that ARMY RR
HOSPITAL could be built, as the labourers were not
joining work. They had to take care of their children

Dr Udita Tyagi (National President, Disha

women by sharing her experiences and said that a
marriage doesn't mean a full stop to your dreams and
you can still pursue them. She herself, became Mrs
India after some years of marriage. This she did
because she wanted a celebrity to finance her
scheme of counselling children after doing a
psychological test. CBSE was bound to carry this
scheme so that no child would commit suicide under
parental pressure.

They all emphasized that women have the
potential to play a pivotal role in Nation Building,
apart from being homemakers. They must seek
inspiration from powerful figures including Sita ji,
Draupadi, Rani Chennamma, Rani of Jhansi,

The auditorium was packed with ladies from all
walks of life. The summit was an important
initiative to empower women and help them realize

Excuse me! Listen, please! Yes, you! Can you look
for the meaning of "Woo" on google, please? Okay,
so it's "seek the favour/support" and what about
"Man"? So, is that what makes "Woman"? No,
certainly not! That's not the etymology but that was
the psychology, wasn't it? Has not history termed
women as a wooer of man, with beauty and service,
for their survival and life? Can "That Person" be free
who is 'termed' to live for someone else, on the grace
of others, dependent on others and rely for their
happiness on others...? What about their freedom,
their life, their happiness... What about the freedom
of women? For centuries these questions were never
answered and then the answers were never
questioned. A woman is a daughter, a sister, a lover,
a wife, a mother, etc, but most importantly, she’s a
complete person. She is one of the most important
being created by God. As said in Bhagavad Gita,
"...Unless mother earth obliged, unless women
obliged, there would be no progeny on mother earth,
life would become meaningless, decay and die!"

women "OBLIGED" and not 'forced').
As Lord Shiva, in the personation of Ardhnarishvar
said that the world cannot exist without 'Purush' and
'Prakriti' coming together. Therefore, a woman has a
special role to play in the cosmic system. In a family-
tree diagram a mother is always the root of the
family, the stronger is the root, the fruitful is the tree.
But for decades and centuries women have been
suppressed, misbehaved, objectified, abused,
tortured, humiliated and treated as an inferior being.
They have suffered a whole lot of hell and miserable
life. But, as in Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says,
"Change is the law of nature," nothing is permanent
in this world and similar is the case with the pathetic
and awful lives of the women.

so why should women seek for their freedom from
men? Who are they to give freedom? It's all about the
patriarchal mentality. The patriarchal mindset,
rituals, traditions, beliefs and practices that
dominated the life of the people. But remember-
Freedom sparks from the mind of an individual and
spreads the fire into the society, the nation and
finally wraps the whole world in its flame. The
ignited flame has undergone metamorphosis; from a
spark into a Volcano in the present scenario and
women are giving a new definition of freedom. The
mindset of people is rapidly changing and evolving
from patriarchy to equality. Women are striving for
freedom and equality. They want freedom in every
aspect of their life. Freedom to live; to learn, to
grow, to fail, to succeed, to win, to lose, to work, to
rest, to think, to innovate, to add beauty to the world,
to create new hopes, to live their dreams, to live their
lives, to do the unthinkable, to do the undoable...
They have not left any stone unturned and the whole
world is bowing before them.
These women turned their dreams into reality. They
are not inferior, weaker or suppressed human beings,
rather, they are one of the most powerful species on
the earth. They define the freedom of woman as- life
on their own terms, a life of their own choice; full of
freedom, filled with respect and love, rooted with
confidence and passion, moulded by dreams and
vision, lived with heart and soul and thus making the
world- a better place to live in.

Circa 1997, not a single woman CEO was part of the
Fortune 500. Fast-forward to present day, and you’ll
find 31 professionals (6.2%) of all Fortune 500
CEOs to be women. The number is on the rise but
why has the change been so slow? In an era where
diversity is supposed to be good for business, isn’t
this surprising?
Living in India, you will often hear of girls doing
better than boys in the educational domain. Paid
employment opportunities for women have
multiplied in the past few decades. But what
happens when it comes to climbing the corporate
ladder and leading the C-Suite? When asked the
same question, most men and women in the
corporate world would argue how unimportant
gender is; how its role in the ability to run a business
is progressively receding. There are also those who
will go to the extent of saying that women
executives are better professionals, on account of
their honest and ethical behaviour as opposed to
their male counterparts. If this is so, then why do
statistics indicate the polar opposite?
The most obvious of all answers is that gendered
stereotypes are saturating the workplace. Whether it
is in terms of risk-taking abilities or leading team
members, it is assumed that a man would demand
more respect and be taken more seriously (Yes, it is
as bad as it sounds). You would inevitably notice

same principle works in the opposite fashion too –
where a less attractive female employee is often
ignored.
Fields such as HR, Communication, PR, and design
are dominated by female employees vis- à-vis
functional domains such as sales, finance, analytics,
management and operations. This form of division
of labour is an indication of self-selection
undertaken by women, by virtue of the values and
ideals they are brought up with. Additionally, it is
also the modern-day extension of age-old biases
pertaining to a woman’s capacity to manage and
lead.
Not just in the workplace, the average working
woman is also faced with a number of limitations at
home. There are greater social pressures on a woman
as compared to a man and this invariably alters her
chances in the professional world. Even in families
where both parents are working, it is always the
mother who is called first when the child falls sick at
school. Ask yourself, when a male CEO addresses
his board of directors, how many of you question
what he’s wearing?
Thus, it becomes imperative to understand the social
stigmas around the working space and break them
one by one, in order to bring a positive change and
growth in society.

- The words which we have heard innumerable times right from

our childhood. Haven’t we?

Compromise is a word which we, women are
taught to imbibe in our lives, as we are trained from
the early stage of our life, according to patriarchal
norms. As a society, we are conditioned to think that
women are bound to make compromises and if they
refuse to do so, they are labelled as 'Selfish' by the
people around them. Most of us have grown up with
the teaching which asserts that as a female, it is our
lifelong duty to fit in and let go of our dreams and
aspirations for the sake of others not just once but
'ALWAYS'. Lamentably, the idea of an ideal woman
is equated with the number of compromises she
makes in her life and how easily she pushes aside her
interests to fulfil the expectations set by others. As
men are considered to be the breadwinner of a
family, the dreams, career, interests of women are
second fiddled and marriage becomes the focal point
of her life as it is quite ubiquitous in our
surroundings.
Here, we need to ruminate about these two
words- ‘Compromise’ and ‘Adjustment’ as there is a
stark difference between both of them. However,
these two words make a different meaning in the life
of a woman.
Adjustments are little changes which are
mandatory in order to co-exist, live and work with
other people. As it is said that adjustments are a well-
considered behaviour of a wise person. But, if we
talk about women, the adjustments are much
supervenient. From being a daughter to daughter in
law, they have to acclimate in a new place and start
all over again. Adjustments are considered to be the
key of a happy and flourishing relationship when it is
from both the sides equally and that is exactly how it
should be. Balance is not possible if only females are
looked up to for making necessary adjustments, it
should be from both sides.
On the other hand, compromising behaviour of
women is associated with family honour. However,
compromises made willingly without any pressure
is a personal choice, but the problem arises when
male chauvinism forces women to make
compromises in their personality, freedom, career,
values and core essence unwillingly. Their dreams
and wills are squashed under the male ego, which
results in denying the essence of individualism and
makes them feel devalued in their very own purpose
of life. It comes with a substantial price of personal,

emotional freedom and a life full of remorse. Yet the
majority of females happily sacrifice their own self
for their families. Selflessness is a God gifted
quality of women. She dedicates her entire life for
her family with a smile and a sense of duty, but a
majority of them are not valued for as we are
ignorant towards their efforts and emotions and
think that they are anyways supposed to do it.
If we look at the numbers, according to the
National Sample Survey Organization and Census,
the data reveals that the participation of women in
the workforce has been falling drastically. It fell
from 36% to 24% over the last decade. It is a wake-
up call to work towards ensuring more women
contribute to the economy. A recent trend is that
around 40% opt to quit after taking maternity leave
bringing down their shares. The study shows that in
a progressive society, there is a very little family and
spousal support.

Here we really need to raise some questions- For
how long patriarchy will control the lives of
women? Why does a marriage become the crux of
existence for women? Why are women's dreams not
as important as men? But this doesn't apply to all
men in the society. I would like to applaud those who
are breaking the stereotypes and questing these
regressive norms by being equal partners. My
heartfelt gratitude to men who believe in favouring
social equality. Thank you for not believing in the
game of “One side makes all the demand and the
other side only makes the compromise.”
Lastly, it is important to have the flexibility and
make adjustments and compromise, but not on the
stake of our passion and existence. Let's
constructively start creating the right balance and
equality for the betterment of society and the nation.

Are we really predetermined to have certain beliefs
and mannerisms? If so, then who decides these
ground rules for us? In general terms, “Sexuality”
tends to relate to the biological differences between
males and females. “Gender,” on the other hand,
tends to denote the social and cultural role of each
sex within the rules of a given society like the degree
of decision-making and financial responsibility
expected of each gender and the time that women or
men are expected to spend on homemaking and
rearing children. What I want to primarily talk about
here are ‘Gender norms’ which show up in our
everyday lives in more ways than we know. Both
conscious and unconscious gender biases prevail
within us and most of us do not even realise it.
We often have social expectations for the kids from
the moment they’re born and even earlier. What type
of person we want them to be or if we’d like them to
be active in sports, art or cooking etc. Gender
expectations are very common and it’s usually these
messages which begin even before a child is born.
Just think of how many ‘gender reveals’ you’ve seen
on social media- a blue balloon when it’s a boy and a
pink cake when it’s a girl. Where a girl apparently
only plays with a kitchen set, barbies and a boy with
racing cars. Where girls aren’t supposed to have
short haircuts or play basketball, for that matter,
because apparently, that will make her a tomboy.
The way we think about females has deeply
embedded roots. It is indeed true that before you
become a woman, it’s presumed how you’re
supposed to be like when you actually become a
woman. Aren’t we all somehow collectively
responsible for the social construction of gendered
stereotypes?

The harsh reality is that rigid gender role
expectations limit us all from realising our
aspirations and access to the vast pool of
opportunities out there. While there's nothing wrong
with being feminine- gentle and graceful, but a
woman should never feel the pressure to do so in
order to meet societal expectations. If I go by
genetics, it is inarguable that men tend to be
physically stronger, the reason being they have
greater muscle mass which helps testosterone in
causing muscular hypertrophy. Whereas, women
own emotional strength because the limbic system is
more pronounced in the female brain. One of the
things that the limbic system is responsible for is the
emotional evaluation of social and interpersonal
interactions. But, leaving aside the biological
differences, the differences in men's and women's
psyches- empathy, cognitive abilities etc; also result
from direct gender socialisation. We can’t just
assume that everything we see is biological, when in
fact the social and cultural inputs are huge. I’m not
saying that they solely account for everything in
terms of gender difference. But they certainly
account for a lot more than what we think they do.
Imposing the belief: “There are certain things that
only men can do and others that only women can do”
marks the beginning of actual issue because
generalisation is a step towards the creation of
gender stereotypes.
“Women are really poor drivers.”- haven’t you ever
heard, said or felt something like this? It’s because of
such notions that women who actually drive feel the

unnecessary pressure to outperform else they’ll be
judged for the slightest mistake they do. Can’t we
just let being a good driver be entirely independent
of whether it’s a man or a woman behind the
steering? Acting “Lady-like” definitely doesn’t
imply the sort of strength that “Man-up” does.
Society has the habit of stigmatising all behaviours
that are apparently “feminine.” Crying, getting hurt,
wanting kids, marriage & the list is endless. Of
course, if you’re not man enough, you’ll be mocked
into wearing bangles- “Choodiyan pehen lo” and if a
man dare cry then he is disregarded as being a
woman because obviously “mard ko dard nahi hota
aur auraton ka toh kaam hi rona hai”- men don’t hurt
and women just cry. When did doing something
like a woman become an insult?
We, as parents and society members also choose
words that limit us by gender. Have you ever heard
something like this: Young child: “Why can’t I?”
Parent: “Because girls don’t do this and that…” I
wish that these statements weren’t so powerful, but
they are. So, even if it may not seem like, these
words make a huge difference. The way we talk
about women and femininity shapes how we treat
and view women and gender as a whole.
It’s even more saddening that not only the females
but males have to face the repercussions of this
patriarchal society as there is always a social
pressure that they have to deal with- to be a true
gentleman. If a man won’t open doors or pull a chair
for a woman, he’s labelled to have no chivalry. But,
why as women do we even expect these things from
men? In metros/buses, we always expect a man to
vacate a seat if a woman is standing. Have you ever
thought that maybe he also needs that seat as much
as a woman does? The problem clearly lies at both
ends of the spectrum. Could we be free of these rigid
gendered roles and captivities? Because even with
all the progress, Gender inequities still persist today.
The stigma is so deeply embedded that there’s no
realisation of what we’re doing wrong as a society.
In today’s world also, cooking is considered to be
something that women must learn. Why can’t we put

aside the gender and just think of it as something that
every person should know for their own
sustainability? If a woman doesn’t know or enjoy
cooking, how does it make her a bad woman when it
doesn’t make a man bad?
We need to start valuing diverse interests instead of
directly labelling some for men and others for
women. Also, It doesn’t mean that we must have a
50:50 balance of men and women in every
profession purely for the sake of equal
representation. For instance, One of the reasons that
women are prevented from taking on combat roles
in the armed forces is a strength issue, that women
have half the upper body strength of men. But, that’s
an average. We may never see parity, but that doesn’t
mean that women who are strong enough to do that
job should be barred from it when men who are
weaker than these women are still allowed to do it.
That isn’t fair. What should not be cast aside under
any circumstance is the right of every woman to
pursue a career of her choice.
But, Equal rights are not enough. Inequality exists in
our minds, in our biases and prejudices, and that
needs to be fixed foremostly. We’ll have to start at
the fundamental level so that we do not intentionally
or unintentionally propagate the misleading
stereotypical ideology which tends to form our
perception towards gender differences. It’s now
upon us as a society to start evaluating what we think
or say or believe. Let your sons and daughters like
books, sports, and dolls without fear of gender
identity confusion. Unless we realise these minute
things, we would never be able to help women rise
and shine as they should. It’s high time that we
speculate what truly defines a woman and why?
“When someone says your name, what
characteristics do you want them to think of? What
are your morals? What do you stand for ?” Talk
through your dreams, what you wanted to be when
you were young and how that evolved over time and
what hinders you from your dreams today.

Everyone has their own view of life which is
built-up, brought up, and cultivated by people who
are around us or are close to us. Do you really think
that your view is only your view, which is
opinionated by only you? Or is it influenced by
someone else? A collective view of many
individuals creates society’s perspective. These
kinds of perspectives pass on from generation to
generation. This is proven by society’s perspective
of gender roles, it is not only for Indian society, but it
can also be any society or nation which is judging,
describing, viewing a human on the basis of gender.
Is it necessary to think on the basis of gender
discrimination?
Before belonging to any gender we all are a
human being. Why have we forgotten this reality for
so many generations? The gender perspective has
dominated our mentality for so long. We are not able
to think independently, our thinking is overpowered
by this perspective. For so long, the patriarchal
society dictated the norms of the society where so
much of cruelty was tolerated by one half of the
population for generations and they were dictated
and governed by the other half. Men forgot the truth
that they are humans first and that gender comes
later and the same kind of thinking is cultivated by
them in their future generations also.

have the power of thinking, analyzing, observing
and realizing through which we can rectify our
mistakes. We started a fight, focusing on gender
equality, but it has deviated from its path and now we
are much passionate about achieving a dominant
position. Some women want to assert a matriarchal
society. Some females want to take advantage of
their circumstances and want to weaponize that
opportunity against men, due to this other females
are also seen as an opportunistic. We are forgetting
again that ultimately we are a human first. Why do
we need a gender dominant society? Why do we
need gender identity to describe anyone? Can't we
fight to become a human? Is humanity going to die
due to us? After facing all these kinds of things,
society is asking questions about equality and
freedom. Justice has to be given to those who are
innocent and deserve the right to equality and
freedom. We should construct our society that can
focus to create a true human, who can feel the pain
and happiness of one another without any type of
discrimination. Can’t we introspect ourselves from
these perspectives, without being biased?

Holi is the festival of colours, which is celebrated all over India,

with joy unbound. It is a two-day festival, the first day being the
Holika Dahan and second, Dulhendi.

It has been celebrated since the period of Rigveda, it was also known
as “Navanishti.” This was basically a yagya, in which people would offer
the first grains of the season from their fields to devtas, through fire. This is
actually just a way of saying thank you to Devtas for the grains and for
everything. These grains were Hola, thus came the name “Holi.” The fire is kept
ongoing and people take 7 rounds of it. It can cure cough and many other diseases and
kills bacteria. People also dance around this fire and enjoy with everyone. On this very day
of Holika Dahan, Manu was born, due to which it is also called “Manuwadi.”

Festivals have changed over a period of time. Holi which was just a one day festival in the Rigvedic
period became two-day festival later on. In this two day festival, the concept of the use of colours came later
in Dwapar Yug, around the time of Lord Krishna, people would use Kumkum, sindoor, and the flowers of the
Bastard teak. During the Mughal period, many things like poet conferences were started. Even the Mughal
kings like Shahjahan and Bahadur Shah Zafar would play Holi, they used to call it “Id-e-gulabi” and “Aab-e-
pashi” (throwing of water).

There is also a story of Holika Dahan. There was an evil king named Hiranyakashipu. He had a very kind
son named Prahlad. Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, who Hiranyakashipu considered his enemy. So
he tried to draw away Prahlad from Lord Vishnu but Prahlad was a great devotee and would not leave Lord
Vishnu. So, the evil king made up his mind to kill his own son. He made many attempts to kill his son but
failed, as Lord Vishnu would save Prahlad by some way or other. Then, in a plan with his sister Holika, to kill
his son he asked her sister to sit in the fire with Prahlad, with the special cloth she had, which would save her
from burning. She did the same, but the cloth flew away and covered Prahlad, saving him while burning

Holika to death. Another story that revolves around
Holika Dahan is that on this same day of Holika
Dahan, Lord Krishna killed the witch Pootna, who
came to kill Lord Krishna when he was a mere child.
Thus this day is also celebrated as the victory of
Good over Evil.
In this two-day festival, the second day of
Dulhendi being a day full of joy and happiness from
getting together with all our friends and family to
play with colours, to eating a lot of sweets, the first
day has a lot more importance to it along with these.
The first day is the day of Holika Dahan, it is a day
for Sadhna (Meditation). Holika Dahan is to be
done in a fixed period of time on that day, and it is
forbidden to do Holika Dahan in the time period of
Bhadra. In Holika Dahan, a fire is lit up. Any
regional grain like Barley or Wheat is taken and are
roasted while taking rounds of fire, curing our
cough too. Some directly roast them and some tie
them around sugarcane while roasting. One more
important thing is the necklace of cow dung. Cow
dung is taken and then small balls are made of them
with a little hole in the centre, which are then tied up
into a necklace, and then dried, taking five balls for
each member of the family, now this necklace is put
in the fire. People also use ghee (clarified butter),
camphor and dried-up coconut. This fire also
purifies the environment by killing many bacteria.
After this, the roasted grains and coconut are shared
with other people. Everybody gets together and
enjoy themselves by dancing and eating sweets.
The ashes of this fire are very sacred. They must be
collected and applied to either navel, chest, throat,
or between eyebrows, whenever faced with any big
problem. You must be asking how? These ashes are
of Cow's dung, cow's ghee, camphor, sapt-anaaz
(seven grains) and bark of either of a mango tree or
bastard teak. So it's a complete package in itself.
This is the day of a full moon and the 'Mahanishit
Kaal' on the same night, is the night for meditation,
Sadhna and various Siddhis.
The second day of this festival is Dulhendi. This
is the festival of colours, this is the festival of joy
unbound. Children take to the streets from early
morning and start playing with colours and water.
Water guns and water balloons are common in the
hands of children at this time. Many even make
groups and there is a battle of groups. This is the day
when even adults become children and just play
with their hearts open. Everyone gets together,
friends, families, neighbours all get-together and
have fun. They play with colours, dance wildly, and
eat a lot of tasty home-made foods. A wide variety of
mouth-watering dishes are prepared on this day by
everyone, Gunjiyas, Gol-Gappas, Papdis and Dahi
Bhallas being the most popular among them, which
will make you put aside your dieting for the day.
But, even on this joyful day, some females feel
unsafe and spend their whole day at home. Just due
to some anti-social elements, who cross their
boundaries and in the veil of playing with colours
molests women and disrespect them. Due to which
many women feel unsafe while playing Holi. Many
of these men are badly intoxicated by some kind of
substance or other. These vulgar and sick actions
spoil the pious and joyful nature of Holi. It is their
mistake and a big one to think women to be any less.
Lately, our society has become awake again, and
women strike back hard. They give appropriate
answers to such sick actions of these anti-social
men. They are aware of their power and their rights
and know how to protect them. Even society comes
forward now, to help fight these goons. The law and
enforcement have become active and aware in these
kinds of activities, and the punishment for such
immoral actions is harsh.
Holi is a very pious occasion and when
celebrated with pure heart, is very fun and joyful. So
let's just have a lot of fun on this occasion and make
ourselves and everyone else happy.
