INTRODUCTION

Aggregate may be used with binders, such as bitumen for pavement and concrete for
pavement, roads and runways. The wearing surface of the pavement is subject to heavy
static and dynamic loads resulting in crushing of aggregate. Since aggregate should be
tested in crushing due to static and dynamic loads. This lab sheet will guide you on how
to conduct the AIV Test according to BS 812:112.

OBJECTIVE

The Aggregate Import Value Testing Apparatus, meets with BS 812, it is robustly
designed to determine the Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) OF aggregates which provides
a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to sudden shock or impact. When a
road aggregate has been manufactured to a specified grading it is stockpiled , loaded into
trucks, transported, tripped, spread and compacted. If the aggregate is weak, some
degradation may take place and result in a change in grading and/or the production of
excessive and undersirable fines. Thus, an aggregate complying with a specification at
the quarry may fail to do so when it is in the pavement.

Granular base layers and surfacing are subject to repeated loading from truck tires and the
streets at the contact points of aggregate particles can be quite high. These crushing tests
can reveal aggregate properties subject to mechanical degradation of this form.

APPARATUS

Mechanical Sieve Shaker AIV Apparatus (Impact Testing Machine)

Sieves consisting of Pan, 6.3mm, 10mm, 14mm and 20mm.

Tamping rod of 1 cm diameter and 23 cm long.

Weighing scale.

2
PROCEDURE

1. Prepared a sample of aggregates.

2. In 5 minutes, we put sieved the aggregates in a mechanical sieve shaker. The sample
are used for the aggregates passed 12.5mm and retained at 10mm sieve.
3. We need constant temperature of 105 to 110⁰C when we was washed and dried that
aggregates then we cool the samples.
4. The cylindrical measured in 3 layered then we filled the dried sample and we used
the tamping rod for a tapped each layer in 25 times. After that, we used the tamping
rod for level the surface.
5. We record the data of the aggregates and weigh in the measure.
6. We added each time one third of the volume and tapped it for repeated the procedure
twice for remain two third portioned. We note down the weight of the sample.
7. We tapped it 25 times with the tamping rod and we transfer the sample to the steel
mould in three layered of one third volume.
8. We fell freely on the aggregates to released the hammer. The test sample is subjected
to a total of 15 blows.
9. We removed the aggregates sample from the cup and sieve using the 2.36mm sieve.
10. The fraction passed the sieve is weigh.
11. We removed the procedure on 2-3 samples according to our instructor.
12. The AIV is determined as follows :

Percent We ar (%),  Weight Loss  100

COMMENT (S)
The AIV our sample test average percentage is higher than a JKR standard and
specifications because aggregates have high impact value which is not suitable for
construction.
QUESTIONS
1) What is the range of AIV that is recommended for aggregates allowed to be used as a
material in road construction ?

 The range of AIV that is recommended for aggregates allowed to be used is <15%
which is exceptionally strong. 15 - 20% strong , 15 - 30% satisfactory for road
surfacing and >35% is weak for road surfacing.

2) Other than the AIV test, state two tests that are conducted to test the strength of
aggregate.
 Aggregate Crushing Value (ACV)
 Aggregate Abrasion Value (AAV)

CONCLUSION
From the conducting this experiment, we managed to obtain the AIV of our sample. The
AIV of our sample is 56.58 % which is weak for road surface. If the AIV of the sample is
<15%, then the sample is exceptionally strong. If the AIV is >35%, it is weak for road
surfacing. Hence, we can not concluded that our aggregate sample for use in road
surfaces.
