)Limiting reactant (L.R
Example: what mass of Ag2CO3 (275.7 g/mol) is formed when 25 ml of 0.2 M
?AgNO3 are mixed with 50 ml of 0.0800 M Na2CO3
Na2CO3 + 2AgNO3 Ag2CO3 + 2NaNO3
Solution:
#mmol AgNO3 = M*V
= 0.2 *25 = 5 mmole
يعني عدد الموالت بكون m.mole ● هون معطيني الحجم ب ml
#mmole Na2CO3 = M*V
= 0.08*50 = 4 mmole

2mmole of L.R react to produce 1 mole of AgNO3
2 AgNO3 1 Ag2CO3

مشان تطلع الكتلة بالغرام 1 mmole = 10-3 mole
1 mg = 10-3 g
Mass in (g) of Ag2CO3 = 2.5*10-3 * 275.7 = 0.689 g
Example: what will the molar analytical Na2CO3 concentration in the solution
produced when 25 ml of 0.20 M AgNO3 are mixed with 50 ml of 0.08 M Na2CO3?
Na2CO3 + 2AgNO3 Ag2CO3 + 2NaNO3

Normality
⮚ Normality: is the no. of equivalent in 1L soln.
⮚ 1N sol’n contains 1 equiv. /1L
⮚ Equivalent: is the mass of material providing Avogadro's no. of reacting units.
⮚ The no. of reacting units depends on the chemical reaction.
⮚ Equivalent weight= F.wt./No. of reacting units
• For Acids & bases no. of reacting units is based on the no. of H+ an acid give
or react with (OH-).
• For oxidation – reduction reaction: it is based on the number of electrons an
oxidizing or reducing agent will take on or supply.

We often must prepare dilute solutions from more concentrated stock solutions.

determination of permanganate. You have a stock 0.100 M solution of KMnO4
and a series of 100-mL volumetric flasks. What volumes of the stock solution will
you have to pipet into the flasks to prepare standards of 1.00, 2.00, 5.00, and 10.0

Example: You are analyzing for the manganese content in an ore sample by
dissolving it and oxidizing the manganese to permanganate for
spectrophotometric measurement. The ore contains about 5% Mn. A 5-g sample
is dissolved and diluted to 100 mL, following the oxidation step. By how much
must the solution be diluted to be in the range of 3x10-3M MnO-4? (Mn=55g/mol)
