Lesson 3: Overview of American Literature
Discussion: Realism & Mark Twain; Naturalism & Jack London

Instruction
For each literary movement, you should present your understanding of the following points:
• Overview view of literary movement including: definitions; (historical) context; and the most
distinguish feature that makes it stand out from the previous movement.
• Characteristics including: the major events and characters which were in focus of the movement.
• Exemplary works naming some of the most typical authors and their works of art with brief
analysis.
• Analysis of one typical exemplary work by Mark Twain (for Realism) or Jack London (for
Naturalism).

Note: This is the general outline. You are allowed to have space for creativity and adjustment.

Time budget: 30 minutes.

forget to submit your group list with full name, student ID and contribution of every member of the group.
