SECTION - B (5 X14 = 70 Marks)

Answer Any Five of the following

2. A diesel electric propulsion ship has DC motor as a drive for the propeller. Power supply to the
propulsion motor is from AC generator, which generates power at constant voltage and frequency.
Explain with a neat circuit diagram how the system fulfils the requirement of maneuvering i.e.,
(i) Variable Speed (ii) Direction of Rotation. (Ahead & Astern) 14
3. A general cargo ship is provided with an all-electric steering gear. It works on the Ward Leonard
Principle. Draw a labeled diagram and explain its working. 14

4. What is Salinometer? Why is it important on board ship? Explain its working with a neat circuit
diagram if temperature of the condenser something increases from 25 °C to 40 °C due to rise in
sea water temperature, what will be its effect? How the errors will be taken care of? Explain briefly.
10+4
5. (a) What is intrinsically safe circuit? Where are these circuits used on tanker? Draw a circuit and
explain how does these circuits provide the necessary safety. 6
(b) Why tanker's pump room require two different lighting circuits? 4
(c) What do you mean by "Hazardous" and "normally safe" space on tankers? Make a list of Ex-
protected equipment that can be used safely in the hazardous area. 4
6. A ship generator generates power at the rated voltage of 440 Volts and at 60 Hz frequency. Few
of the large rating motors which were running are stopped. It is observed that the RPM of the prime
mover (diesel engine) decreased from its rated 750 RPM to 730 RPM and the voltage decreased
to 420 Volts from the static voltage of 440 Volts. What is the reason behind this drop? Explain
with a neat diagram how this decrease voltage can be brought back to its rated voltage within
seconds. 14
7. (a) What is the difference between an rpm indicator and a revolution counter? Draw circuit
diagram to explain the working of an RPM indicator. Three RPM indicators are placed, one at the
bridge, other in the engine control room and the third at the local maneuvering stand. What
arrangement is made so that all three indicators show the same RPM. 7
(b) A cage rotor type induction motor got flooded with sea water. When measured, the insulation
resistance, found to be 200 Ohm. What will you do to put back the motor into service? 7
8. (a) What do you mean by condition monitoring based maintenance? Which parameters are
monitored? How does it help in deciding maintenance schedule in due time? 7
(b) What maintenance should be carried out on an alternator to maintain it in good working
condition. 7
