There was increased defiance to the conformity of the 50’s. There was a lot of art produced
during that period. Writers especially focused on political issues. Many people questioned
gender, class, and racial roles and issues. College grew in size with more and more people.
Student spoke out about American issues. Most of Kennedy’s presidency was spent not doing
much of anything. They had few substantial successes. They were hesitant to oppose one
side or the other or to create tension. After the massive failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion,
many were unhappy with Kennedy’s leadership. Kennedy was assassinated leading to
extensive grief of the American people. Lyndon Johnson then became President. Johnson did
a lot for domestic relations. He declared a war of poverty, battled for racial rights, and funded
programs like medicare, and immigration reform. All of the good things were overlooked
because of the controversial decision to enter the Vietnam war. Many did not support the
increased use of troops being sent to the war effort. After the assasinaion of MLK, there was
even more tension between groups in America. This led to the eventual presidency of Nixon.
