Money drives the modern world, which is why it’s necessary for the modern

people to know how to properly handle money. Already, the Philippines is taking

measures in line with this mission, in the form of its Accountancy, Business and

Management (ABM) strand for senior high school students, where they are taught

lessons related to such. Naturally, this would mean that ABM students know how to

properly handle money, but do they really apply this knowledge?

In this study, the researchers interviewed 8 ABM students about their financial

behavior, with the interview’s questions covering age to social class to school projects,

to determine how they spend and why they spend.

Results showed that the financial behavior of ABM students were influenced

mainly by social class, age, and allowance, while in terms of expenses, the students

spent the most for school projects. In the study, 4 out of 8 participants admitted to not

being good handlers of money, which meant that the lessons they learned as ABM

students were not being applied by them.

Based from this, the researchers recommended that ABM students should be

better educated in financial matters, by means of a proposed two-day seminar

v
workshop at the end of every semester, offering lectures, competitions and solutions to

the students. Such workshop is intended to provide engaging, entertaining yet

informative discourse to further students’ knowledge on how to handle money properly,

as well as teaching of business-related topics like preparation of certain papers, inflation

and the stock market, etc.
