Introduction

With the Philippines known for its domestic farm lands and animals, one of the
most common businesses business opportunists take in the Philippines is poultry.
Poultry farming is the process of raising domesticated birds such as chickens, ducks,
turkeys and geese for the purpose of farming meat or eggs for food. Poultry – mostly
chickens – are farmed in great numbers. Farmers raise more than 50 billion chickens
annually as a source of food, for both of their meat and eggs.

According to the researchers and scientists, 74 percent of the world's poultry

meat, and 68 percent of eggs are produced in ways that are described as 'intensive'.
One alternative to intensive poultry farming is free-range farming using lower stocking
densities. Poultry producers routinely use nationally approved medications, such as
antibiotics, in feed or drinking water, to treat disease or to prevent disease outbreaks.
Some FDA-approved medications are also approved for improved feed utilization. With
these statistics, opportunists quickly take part in the poultry industry, specially in the
Philippines as the Filipino people loves chicken and eggs because chicken is a good
source of protein and is much healthier to eat than red meat which is high in cholesterol.

Poultry farming business is highly profitable if it is properly run under acceptable

methods and conditions conducive for the birds. Each type of livestock farming, poultry
included, follows specific operational principles if they must run profitably, but when
such principles are ignored by the farm management, it results in serious losses.

The overriding motive for starting any business is to make profit. It is unfortunate
however, that many poultry farmers do not take the time to learn why some poultry
farmers failed. It is widely known that many poultry farmers have been forced out of
business when they could not operate profitably.

How Big is the Poultry Industry of the Philippines?

Cutting edge technology, employed by visionaries in the poultry industry, has

boosted our production rate. Modernization has even made us the new darling in the
region.
The Philippines has well-attained self-sufficiency in poultry, a prolific producer of
poultry products. About 800 million broilers are produced annually and in spite of rising
population, the country’s supply continues to meet consumer demands. Even
restaurants and those who are in the food business have steady flow.

Livestock production which shared 17.41 percent in the total agricultural output

increased by 3.22 percent in the second quarter of 2019. Hog and dairy came up with
output gains during the period. The value of livestock production amounted to PhP 77.7
billion at current prices, indicating a 1.96 percent decrease this quarter. In the first half
of 2019, livestock production grew by 2.24 percent.

Poultry production went up by 4.14 percent and it accounted for 17.75 percent of

the total agricultural output in the second quarter of 2019. Except for duck, all poultry
commodities posted increased production. At current prices, the value of poultry
production at PhP 56.7 billion was down by 2.26 percent compared to the previous
year’s record. From January to June 2019, poultry production increased by 4.73
percent.

Successful Poultry Business

EGGcelsior Poultry Farms, Inc.

Agri-business company EGGcelsior Poultry Farms, Inc., is building a state-of-the-

art, sustainable poultry farm in Brgy. Capio-an, Argao, southern Cebu to augment the
growing demand for eggs in Cebu and neighboring provinces.

The 20-building poultry farm, which broke ground in March last year is slated to
be completed by fourth quarter this year, announced Alvin S. Hing, the company’s chief
executive officer.

EGGcelsior Poultry Farms, Inc. is a modern layer farm that adopts state-of-the-
art facilities, ensuring the production of high quality eggs with its eco-friendly facility.

Recently, the company inked a deal with Bank of the Philippines Islands (BPI) to
help fund the completion of the modern layer farm.
The partnership, Hing said is seen to boost the agriculture sector and
complement the government’s recent thrust to push for more investments in the sector
and drive more contribution to the country’s economic growth.

Under the partnership, BPI has committed to be EGGcelsior’s partner for the
development of the farm thereby putting in investment and additional income coming
from the sector.

“We would like to be part of uplifting the lives of the Filipino people by producing
quality food as well as creating more economic activities through jobs created from the
investment,” said Hing.

With the opening of the EGGcelsior farm, Hing said that the company hopes to
play a role in stirring growth for the agriculture sector as well as raise the standard in
egg farming in the country.

The farm adopts modern technologies and state-of-the-art facilities for a more
efficient egg production, thus adhering to sustainable and eco-friendly operations, he
explained.

Latest record showed that Central Visayas’ agricultural production only grew by
1.09 percent in 2018, making the region among the least contributors to the country's
gross agriculture output during the year.

Arguably, one of the top poultry businesses in the country.
