Introduction

A company or business is nothing without its man power and customers.

Basically, these are the building blocks or the life of the business. Without it, the
business will fail and eventually go out of business. To keep these assets, it is the
company’s responsibility to maintain friendliness and a strong bond with these people
and in doing so, can help the company or business substantially. This is what we call
Social Responsibility.

Social responsibility of business implies the obligations of the management of a

business enterprise to protect the interests of the society. According to the concept of
social responsibility the objective of managers for taking business decisions is not
merely to maximize profits or shareholders’ value but also to serve and protect the
interests of other members of a society such as workers, consumers and the community
as a whole.

Maintaining trust and interest of your people can keep your company afloat in the
industry. There are a lot of ways to keep these people interested and satisfied with your
company. Some company managers like to conduct business activities to keep their
employees happy. Some like to make social activities that also involves the customers
that provide benefits and happiness to them, i.e. fund-raising activities, sales, promos,
etc. Also, with fund-raising activities, the money earned can be donated to different
organizations or group to create a bond or partnership, increasing the chance of
success to both parties.

Social Responsibility

Social responsibility is a means of achieving sustainability. Adopting key social

responsibility principles, such as accountability and transparency, can help ensure the
long-term viability and success of any organization or system.

In 2010, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published an

international standard, ISO 26000, to help organizations assess and address their social
responsibilities. ISO 26000-2010: Guidance on Social Responsibility defines social
responsibility as:

The responsibility of an organization for the impacts of its decisions and activities
on society and the environment, through transparent and ethical behavior that:

 Contributes to sustainable development, including health and the welfare of

society;
 Takes into account the expectations of stakeholders;
 Is in compliance with applicable laws and consistent with international norms of
behavior; and
 Is integrated throughout the organization and practiced in its relationships.

Organizations can achieve sustainability by paying careful attention to their

impact on society and the environment. Behaving in a transparent, ethical manner
ensures an approach that helps protect the long-term success of society and the
environment.

Another tenet of social responsibility is the triple bottom line, also known as
"people, planet, and profit." This is the belief that achieving profit does not require harm
to the planet or the exploitation of people. Organizations can profit while also taking
care of the planet and people.
The Business Case for Social Responsibility and Quality

WIPRO

Wipro Limited is a leading global information technology, consulting and business

process services company. We harness the power of cognitive computing, hyper-
automation, robotics, cloud, analytics and emerging technologies to help our clients
adapt to the digital world and make them successful. A company recognized globally for
its
comprehensive portfolio of services, strong commitment to sustainability and good
corporate citizenship, we have over 175,000 dedicated employees serving clients
across six continents. Together, we discover ideas and connect the dots to build a
better and a bold new future.

Spirit of Wipro, the heart of the company, are the values shared by the company.
It is the core personality, behavior, and characteristics of the company and its people as
a whole. But it also embraces what the company aspires to be. The Spirit is a beacon. It
gives the company a sense of direction and clear sense of purpose. With their four core
values, it gives them motivation to strive for better:

 Be passionate about clients’ success;

 Be global and responsible;
 Treat each person with respect; and
 Unyielding integrity in everything we do.

Wipro socially connects with its people. Always providing quality and benefits.
Always finding ways to help those in need. As a company, they created an event to
keep the satisfaction of their employees and its people to the highest. Thus, Spirit of
Wipro Run is created.

The Spirit of Wipro Run is a fun run event held every year wherein the event
focuses on camaraderie that drives the Spirit of Wipro and celebrates the collective
passion of participants and teams whose goals is to connect rather than to compete. As
said by the Chief Human Resources Office of Wipro Limited, Saurabh Govil, “The ‘Spirit
of Wipro’ Run is among the largest employee engagement events in the world. It is a
great manifestation of what the spirit of togetherness and genuine collaboration can
achieve. The Run that brings together our employees, their families and friends, clients,
partners and suppliers, emphasizes our commitment towards putting greater common
good over individual interests.”

The funds raised from the said event is donated to a charity/foundation to the
company’s choice. And in this case, the Wipro Company of Cebu chooses to raise
funds for Azim Premji Foundation which focuses on improving the educational quality of
many countries covered by the foundation.

As noticed, not only a social responsibility activity is helpful to the company in

terms of keeping their customers and employees happy and contented, it is also a big
help to other corporations too. By working hand-in-hand, the society and the industry
becomes satisfied.

Conclusion

Social Responsibility can not only give help and satisfaction to the community,
but it also it is healthy for the company as profit can be used as a factor for an activity of
some sort. Corporations can choose to merge profit-driven strategies with regulations
that ensure social investment too - whether it’s improving working conditions of
employees or self-regulating practices to ensure a cleaner environment.

In recent years, an increasing number of companies worldwide have started

promoting their Corporate Social Responsibility strategies in response to greater
pressure from customers, the public and their investors, who expect them to act
sustainably as well as responsibly.  The exact definition of CSR is imprecise, however,
and its application differs depending on the industry. CSR refers not only to compliance
with human rights standards, labor and social security arrangements, but also to
the fight against climate change, the sustainable management of natural resources,
consumer protection, philanthropic initiatives and volunteer projects.

Social Responsibility is important. It improves the company’s brand, helps

engage customers, retaining top assets, and help out those in need. Being a  socially
responsible company can bolster a company's image and build its brand. Social
responsibility empowers employees to leverage the corporate resources at their
disposal to do good. Formal corporate social responsibility programs can boost
employee morale and lead to greater productivity in the workforce.
