It is conceivable, however, that one could also commence this or any other “one way drun figure” with the left nand. Although this would provide new variations in the Swiss style of drumming, “it would be as far fron the Old Swiss tradition as having American Drummers perform anacrustic 7-Stroke Rolls with a right hand lead. The Swiss Army Triplet: The Triplet From Hand to Hands A oi pl, Af AL fa 2 A a ee 3 3 3 oa se It is important to note that the swiss Army Triplet is, as its name implies, a rudiment used only in the swiss aray style of drumming, It is rarely found in Basle style beatings where the strokes are constructed on @ single stick-. ing principle (alternating right and left). 2 ~ ane The Swiss Tapflam, a rudiment similar to what the English have called a “Flam and Stroke” and the French a “Coup Anglais,” consists. of a flam preceded by a feint stroke, It is notated with a small flag placed on the head of the “flam-note." This flag represents the single tap which is to precede the flam, 1t iis most often played in a sixteenth-note rhythm, The Tapflam is yu notated thus: AA A__A A ALA As Playedt As Written: As Played: As Writtent ‘The Stroke of 3 is a rudient made up of two sixteenth notes and a 7 final eighth note. It begins with a weak flam, followed by a weak stroke, - | 1,, and ends with a hard stroke. ‘Traditionally, when playing one Stroke of 3 { fa left one is played. This comes from the rudiment's original application as a Swiss Army figure. In the Swiss Amy drumming style, Strokes of 3 played on the downbeat are led with the right hand and those played on the upbeat are led with the left hand. The most conmonly applied version of; the Stroke of 3 in Basle drumming is the upbeat pattern, Therefore, in ~ following with the Army's tradition, Basle drurmers play their upbeat Stroke of 3 with the left.hand leading. It is important to note, however, that this only applies when one Stroke of 3 is used. When two "upbeat" Strokes of 3 are played in close succession, the first one is led with the right hand and the second one is led with the left hand. An "upbeat" Stroke of 3 played with a right hand lead is a notable difference - between the Swiss Army and Swiss Basle styles of drumming. In the Swiss. « Army style, upbeat Strokes of 3 are always led with the left hand. : ; 4 THe LeFT STROKe OF 3 (Upbeat pattern) : preceded by a Flamed Preceded by a Flam: S-Suroke Rolls a Pian Preceded by a Pataflafla-Stroke: The STROKE OF 3 FROm HAND TO HAND preceded by a, Flanmed 5-Stroke Roll, Basle style: fa oo ROLLS Rolls are written in an abbreviated form of notation. Three short cuts £ are placed on the note stem, or in the case of whole notes, below the note head @ . Any note marked-in this manner is rolled in 32nd notes for the duration of its value. A small num- ver placed under the slur indicates the sum total of double strokes plus the terminal stroke ending the roll. Thus: gi a ferttert The various rolls are described as being “long” or “short.” The term Long Roll is broadly applied to any roll containing more than nineteen strokes. Short Rolls, or what American drummers might term "measured rolls,” are rolls which have a specified number of double strokes terminating with a well marked cut-off stroke, They derive their name from the number of notes contained within them, The 5-, 9-, 13-, and 17-Stroke Rolls ‘begin and end with the same hand. ‘When playing two or more in close succession they are executed from hand to hand.
