Why Sonic Drilling & Soil Sampling?

Sonic technology or high-frequency drilling is a unique method for drilling applications in the
fields of environmental, geotechnical, construction, seismic and mineral exploration. The
combination of powerful sonic heads with a variety of carrier vehicle options affords drilling and
sampling in clay, silt, sand and gravel, with high production, superior sample quality, and
enhanced safety. Sandstone, limestone, siltstone, and coarse sediments can be drilled with
Roto-Sonic heads, using water or air methods.

Manufactured in The Netherlands, SonicSampDrill products are distributed worldwide by both,

affiliated companies and licensed agents. By using the highest quality sonic products and service
in the industry we like to serve our clients with fast service and extra ordinary precise sampling
results.

The Compact Sonic System is designed to run a large variety of down-hole tooling to:

Create boreholes for injection, seismic and geo-construction applications

Core boreholes for mine tailings, quarries or general exploration
Install permanent monitoring points, multi-channel and geothermal wells
Collect soil, groundwater, and soil vapour samples for environmental applications

ABSTRACT – PRECISION SOIL SAMPLING SYSTEM

A new technology now gives the fast and precise answer to investigators about the composition
and properties of the materials in different depths as the cores are pure and unbroken and come
up as a whole piece with up to 4 m length, without mixtures between soils and even sediments
and sands come up like untouched, purely and unmixed.
This leads to a reduction in effort and cost as no longer misinterpretation can happen, the
properties of soils can be determined by means of probes for the lab or as in situ testing.

SONIC-SOIL-SAMPLING is a unique new technology for drilling and sampling. Characterized by

rapid speed, superior sampling core samples, minimal formation disturbance, and safety.
Geologists and engineers appreciate the many advantages of our SONIC Drilling & Sampling
system.

THE SONIC DRILLING SYSTEM

The heart of this unique Sonic drilling system consists of 2 excentrics that are driven by 2 small
high-speed (6-12.000 rpm) hydro-engines. The high frequency vibrations (100-200Hz) that are
generated by this are transferred in a smart and effective way to the drilling rods. These high
frequency vibrations cause the soil surrounding the drilling point and each coupling to become
fluid. The zone that is made fluid is actually fairly small, between 1 and a maximum of 5mm all
round. The high-frequency vibrations are transferred from the sonic head directly to the drilling
rods, which causes the first micro-layer of surrounding soil to be held in suspension. This process
reduces the friction of the drill rod and borehole interface so that the rods and sampling tools
rapidly penetrate sand, silt, clay and gravelly soils.

More rigid clay soils prove harder to penetrate, below the water table this process is accelerated
however, sonic sampling gives extremely nice cores even in sandy and fine gravel. Through the
high frequency vibrations just a small part of the sample area outside is affected by the
vibrations. A recovery rate of 95% often will be reached. Another big advantage of Sonic
vibrations. In addition to the vertical vibration, the sonic drill heads can also rotate to easily make
up and break drill rods, and to cut concrete, stone or asphalt.

SONIC DRILLING & SOIL SAMPLING

The application of Sonic sampling is in the sampling with high-grade quality using the Aqua-lock
method (for instance for archaeological purposes, sand dredging wells, filtration research for
drinking water companies, geophysical research, prospecting for gold veins etc.), and in placing
of quality filters hype 32mm, Direct-well filters (1”) hype 63mm, all types of sensors (for instance
divers; small water monitoring loggers), seismic explosive charges in the soil through the lost
cone method. Sonic sampling also be used in percussion gauge sampling, placing aeration- and /
or rinsing hoses for remediation projects (lost cone method), and for the extension of the
possibilities (depth / diameter) of cone penetrations test machines.

Sampling with AQUALOCK sampler:

The AQUALOCK is a patented sampling method that really comes into its own when used in
conjunction with the Sonic drill module. The sampler that comes in 2, 3 or 4-metre lengths is
dropped to its required depth at the same speed as with the lost cone method. For the
penetration the space within the AQUALOCK sampler is filled with water which keeps the piston
down at the bottom end. There is no drilling cone involved, therefore. When the required depth
has been reached, the water is allowed to escape towards the drilling rods above.
The sonic vibrations make it possible to achieve a nice core where in the case of homogeneous
soil types only the outer layer (1 to 2mm) is visibly affected by the vibrations. Samples can be
taken from clay as well as from (coarse) gravely sand. The sampler can be lowered down the
previously drilled hole and at the new depth another sample can be taken. This involves
repeatedly inserting and extracting the drilling rod but the sampling is achieved very easily and
rapidly with this method. Finally, with the aid of the water the sample is pressed out of the
sampler into a trough or a plastic liner.

APPLICATIONS:
The SONIC system has many applications:
• High-quality continuous soil sampling for environmental, geotechnical, construction, and
archaeological sampling
• Saturated sand, silt and clay samples in wetlands, beaches, and estuaries
• Sandstone, limestone, siltstone, and coarse sediments
• Monitoring well installations
• Seismic explosive charge installations (seismic shothole drilling)
• Sensor and monitoring point installations
• Injection points for in-situ remediation
• Groundwater and vapour sampling
• Geothermal and heat exchange system installations
• Grouting and tie-back installations
