This study was designed to determine the Standards in Choosing a Social Media

Platform as an Information Source of the Selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social

Sciences students. Since the rise of technology in today's generation increases and more

people are creating their own accounts in different social media platform it is significant

to be aware about the posts they see online to avoid misleading information. It is very

essential to set certain standards when it comes to the sources of information they are

exposed to; for which it could guarantee that they are getting factual information in their

social media platform. This study aimed to get the standards and information needed of

the chosen participants to get possible outcomes. In order to achieve the purposes of the

study, survey questionnaires were distributed with the use of convenience sampling in the

selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students and in there the researchers

would be able to identify the answers to problem of the study. The results is based on the

highest percentage of standards under Infrastructure and Operation of Facebook and

Twitter.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In this generation, people are expose to the world of technology. It can be seen

everywhere from the houses, to schools and even in offices. Everyone is using

technology especially social media in regular basis. It was said that people probably can't

imagine living without it now, expect for the last few decades, everyone did.

The birth of social media in 1997, Six Degrees is the first social media site it was

named after the 'six degrees of separation' theory and lasted from 1997 to 2001. It

authorized users to create a profile and then send friend request to other user and it also

allowed those who don’t register to the website as users to confirm friendships and

connected to a few people. After Six Degrees, the internet moved to the era of blogging

and instant messaging. The word "blog" is form in the phrase “weblog" which was

invented by Jorn Barger. He is an early blogger and was an editor of the site 'Robot

Wisdom’.

The internet is everywhere during 2000s, in that year, over 100 million people had

access to the internet and they engaged in socially online. It looked odd but in that time it

was said to be the best. Massive people began to utilize the chat rooms for making

friends, dating and such but there's a best to come.

There was a first social media surge during 2003. In this year, there's a website

called MySpace it was the popular place to make a profile and make friends in the early

2000's. It has small user based compared to Facebook and Twitter. The musicians used
10

LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

the MySpace to promote their music.

Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, around 2005, which became a

phenomenon because over a billion users have used it.

The most popular photo sharing sites since around 2010 and up until now is Flick

but others include Photobucker and Instagram. Instagram has been gaining popularity

ever since it was created and one of the top social media sites right now.

There's a thousand of social media platform to this current day, all serving the

same but has varying uses. Some of the social media platforms however have different

levels of popularity due to whom the platform is catered to. For example: Instagram

caters to the type of people who likes to communicate others through photographs best

while the Twitter are for those people who communicates in a short burst of information.

It is difficult to know what the future of social media will be. People are the

social animals and they have an ability to communicate with others and are creative

which maybe they can invent a new social media anytime soon and it will be interesting

if they create one (Merrell, 2018).

Social Media is utilized as a data source of information, it indicates news and

information that are currently happening in our society right now. Social media shows

category of applications that shows specific contents. It is increasingly available for

information seeking. A channel that shows or provides more opportunities for this is the

internet. Compared to traditional forms of social media, it have provided a newer

platform for people to use in seeking such information that they need and it seem to be
11

LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

intended to provide to those who want information in real time (Westerman, 2013).

Objectives of the Study

1. The study aims to state the standards according to Infrastructure in choosing

social media as an information source of the participants.

2. The study aims to state the standards according to Operation in choosing social

media as an information source of the participants.

3. The study aims to know the needed information of the participants.

Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to state the Standards in Choosing a Social Media Platform and

the information needed of the Selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social Science students

of Lyceum of the Philippines University-Cavite. It specifically aimed to answer the

following questions:

1. What are the standards of the selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social

Sciences students of Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite in choosing

social media platform as an information source according to Infrastructure?

2. What are the standards of the selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social

Sciences students of Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite in choosing

social media platform as an information source according to Operation?

3. What information is needed by the selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social

Sciences students of Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite from the

social media platforms according to Infrastructure and Operation?

participants. In order to get the needed information, the researchers would first execute an

assessment of related literature and process to conduct a survey to the selected strand

which is the Grade 12 Humanities and Social Science students of the Lyceum of the

Philippines University – Cavite. The output would be the standards of the said

participants in choosing social media as an information source.

Theoretical Framework

Uses and Gratification theory seeks to understand why people seek out the media

that they do and what they use it for. It differs from other media effect theories in that it

assumes individuals have power over their media usage, rather than positioning

individuals as passive consumers of media. It explores how individuals deliberately seek

out media to fill certain needs or goals such as entertainment, relaxation and socializing.

(David L. 2016)

Significance of the Study

This study would be a significant endeavor for the students of Lyceum of the

Philippines University – Cavite about their Standards in Choosing Social Media Platform

as their Information Source.

Furthermore, the beneficiaries of this research would be the following:

 The Community

This study would help the community to become aware if the information they get

in social media is factual or not and they would be aware of their own standards in

choosing social media as an information source.

 Students

The results of this study would provide students of the Lyceum of the Philippines

University – Cavite or of any school who would get a hold on this study would

benefit as well. The standards, reliability and legitimacy of the information they

see in social media will be discussed in this study which they can use as their

reference for school works.

 Educators

This research is helpful for educators, which they can use for powerpoint

presentation and share with their students about what type of social media source

they should look and get information from.

 Future Researchers

This study would serve as a reference and basis to the future researchers whom

would like to conduct a related study about the Standards in Choosing Social

Media as an Information Source.

Scope and Delimitations

The researchers will only conduct a study about the Standards in Choosing Social

Media Platform as an Information Source. The study is limited to the students of the

Grade 12 Humanities and Social Science strand of the Lyceum of the Philippines -

Cavite. This study uses quantitative research design for determining the standards of the

said participants in choosing media as their information source.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Social Media

Social media is the collection of online platforms and tools that people use to

share profiles, ideas, information, insights and etc. Social media sites starts from year

1997-2001 and those sites are: Friendster, this is the very first social media site that was

invented and created by Peter Chin, Jonathan Abrahams, and Dave Lee. In January 2004

Gmail was created to be Google’s first service email. February 2004, Facebook was

launched by Mark Zuckerberg. In 2005, Youtube was born on which the platform allows

users to watch, upload, and share videos. In the year 2018, fake news and virtual reality

are invented. Fake news is a crack down throughout social media platforms like

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and etc. (Ahmad, 2018).

In an article, “What is Social Media?” by Daniel Nations (2018), he describes the

uses of different social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and

others as a way of individuals to communicate with other users to get information they

needed. Since social media is all about interaction and communication, it helps the

individual users to reach out and be updated with current events, news, and issues around

the world. To get a better understanding of the term “social media”, Nations gave two

separated meanings to the term. The word “social” is the way people communicate with

other people just by sharing information with them either on the internet or in real life.

While “media” refers as a tool which is used to communicate with users on the internet
17
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

(examples like televisions, radio, and newspapers are way more traditional forms of

media). He also added that social media is easier for people to use because it is a two-way

street where users can communicate and share thoughts and opinions about a certain

matter.

Social Media Applications/Sites

Using social media sites has shaped our society over the years. In just one click

we can already connect with other people from across the world. Social media helps us

instantly interact with our friends, families and loved ones. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram

are some of the most popular social media sites right now. According to Price in his

article ’The Top 20 Social Media Apps and Sites in 2019’, he stated the top 20 social

media sites that has been widely used by people and how easy it is to access them.

Facebook was founded on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and still is the

biggest social media network on the Internet. From its 2 billion users this application is

an easy way to connect with the people you are close with your life. On the other hand,

Twitter is one of the leading social media platform in 2019 wherein it allows users to

send and receive short posts called tweets. Tweets has only a character limit of 280

(formerly 140 characters) but with this character limit users can creatively share their

thoughts and opinions in such things and can also include links to relevant websites and

resources. If you want breaking news, instant reactions, and access to your favorite sports

stars, celebrities, and journalists, Twitter is a good resource.

Other popular social media sites right now are Instagram perfect for its sharing

18
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

images and short video clips. LinkedIn provides social networking for professionals.

Snapchat revolves around sharing images and videos as well. Tumblr a social networking

and blogging collide; text, photos, videos and other media content are all in one in this

application. Pinterest is an image bookmarking site. Sina Weibo, China’s answer to

Twitter with more than 400 million users. Reddit, a place to find like-minded people.

TikTok is the newest social media application which was the most downloaded app in

2018 and quiet similar to Vine for its short-form video. Ask.fm is a question-and-answer

site. VKontakte is the Russian equivalent of Facebook; it is the most popular site in the

country. Flickr is primarily a photo-hosting site. Meetup an online tool to find groups and

events that match your interests, then turn up to the group’s next meetup. InterNations a

site that lets you find other people in your city who match your language, interests, or line

of work. XING is a popular alternative to LinkedIn in mainland Europe. Nextdoor is a

neighbourhood-based social network. Tinder is full of single users looking to meet up and

spend a few hours together. Foursquare is a location-based social media app. Last but not

the least, Myspace a music-themed social network. (Price, 2019)

According to Maina (2016), the most popular social media is Facebook with 1.5

billion monthly active users. Facebook has helped to create a brand for many individuals

and businesses. Using a Facebook fan page, you can increase your social media presence

for your business. If used properly, Facebook can help you find new leads and clients. It's

also a major source of entertainment for people around the globe and you can easily

connect with people using wall updates, private messages, and video chats. The second

19
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

most popular social media is Twitter. One of the vantage points of using Twitter is its

simplicity, which wins over other social media app. Twitter's potential for expanding

your business or website's audience is hard to deny. Creating an account on Twitter is

free, making it easy to get started tweeting to promote your work or share your ideas and

thoughts.

In the article of Moreau (2019), ‘The Top Social Networking Sites People Are

Using’ he stated that almost all of us has Facebook because it is one of the most popular

and easiest social media app to use and there have been 2 billion active users monthly.

What users like about this app is because of its massive community, easy to find long lost

friends, integrated messenger and interesting groups and pages to join. On the other

hand, Twitter is known as the real-time, public microblogging network where news

breaks first. Users can only form tweets with the limit of 280 characters and show

unfiltered feed where they can see everything in tweets. Just like Facebook, Twitter has a

very large community where it is easy to use and access and you can also get updates

from major brands and integrates with third party services

Social Media As An Information Source

The Egyptian government journalists explore the adaption and use of social media

as a source of information. In an article written by Mansour (2016), there are a total of

386 journalists representing the three official newspapers of Egypt based on applied

survey. In the findings of survey it showed that 27.2% of journalists were found to not

20
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

use social media, mostly males (69.7%), age of 40 years (77.7%) and mostly with a

Bachelor of Arts (80.4%). Meanwhile there's 72.8% of them who were found to use these

platforms and they were also males (59.1%), younger than 40 years (65.9%) and mostly

with a Bachelor of Arts degree (93.2%). 69.9% were rather old users whose experienced

ranged from seven to ten years, and more than two-thirds (73.5%) have used these media

platforms heavily from four to more than six hours a day. A large number (95.7%) of

users were found to be advanced users were confirmed by the results. It was also stated

that the home and work are the most significant places to access the social media

platforms and where it is found to be more useful.

Media sharing, micro blogging, finding information, social networking sites,

communication and research, for keeping up to date, sharing information, blogs and

comments and forums are the most types of social media used. Enormous number of

users are tend to accept these social media platforms as a sources of information not just

because technology and internet influenced us but it is accessible, have linked references,

updated sources, precise, endorse the current work, suitable, protected, and etc.

However, there are disadvantages when using social media platforms like lack of

know-how to cite sources, lack of authority of the news source, lack of quality of

information sources and lack of time needed to access social media were at least

important to the journalists (Mansour, 2016).

A highly interactive technology is what new media is frequently distinguished as.

In Robert Logan’s book, “Understanding New Media”, he stated that new media is “very
21
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

easily accumulated, handled, transformed, retrieved, hyper-linked and the most thorough

of all, easily searched for and accessible.” New media can be viewed as a cultural process

which reflects societal values and societal changes. The five types of new media that

illustrate the new media are the following: Blogs, Virtual Reality, Social Media, Online

Newspapers and Digital Games (Neese, 2016).

In Markozashvili (2017) report, “Digital News Report 2016” it was found that

51% of those interviewed (more than 50,000 individuals in 26 nations) utilized ‘internet

based life’ as a wellspring of news every week. For one out of ten of those utilized

internet based life as their fundamental wellspring of news. It shows the development of

web-based social networking as a primary wellspring of news (chose nations) just from a

year ago. As per from the report, in Brazil, the development of web based life as a

primary wellspring of news expanded from 10% to 18%, while in Denmark it multiplied

from 6% to 12%. Other chose nations likewise experienced critical increment. In Greece,

27% said internet based life was their principle wellspring of news, more than televisions

(21%) and print (3%).

Web-based life is only one of the ways individuals everywhere throughout the

world access news, notwithstanding television, radio, news site, and different sources. In

any case, in this specific report when we take a look at the news utilization practices

considering the age of the buyer, it turns out to be certain that for "each gathering under

45, online news is presently more imperative than television news. For 18-24 web-based

life (28%) beats television (24%) out of the blue with print falling behind at only 6%."

22
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

The infographic exhibits that while 64% of 18-24s expressed that their fundamental news

source was "web-based" (counting internet based life), this number was 25% for 55+.

Then again, 53% of 55+ said that television was their primary news source, while just

24% of 18-24s expressed television as their fundamental wellspring of news.

The Four Criteria That Matter The Most When Choosing A Social Media Tool:

First step, the social media performs as advertised. The advertised social media must

contain the promised function that the tool is offering. For example the liking, sharing

and following button, it must obtain the exact functions that the person will press. The

second one is the social media should stay relevant. Social media applications like

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other application must be updated in order to have new

updates of the software. Third is that social media must be intuitive. It is significant that

the social media tool is easy to learn in just a matter of time, it also caters steps and

provide tools that have solutions to problems that users might encounter. The fourth one

is the cost effective of the social media tool. Some applications provide subscription

tools, paid subscriptions and the free trial. In paid subscriptions, the users are able to

navigate all the tools with no limitations once you paid for it. The user can choose how

long want to purchase the application such as months or year. While in free trial, the user

has a limitation of days to use the application free of charge. The purpose of free trial is

so the user can decide to purchase the application or not and the user can cancel it

anytime (Bullock, 2016).

23
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

Chowdhury (N.D), identified the roles of media in society. Social Media as an

information source is the major role. Advertisements and promotions are also mainly for

information purpose. Unlike library sources, social media provide information

contributed by users whose trustworthiness is often unknown and difficult to evaluate.

Education is the most essential role of media. Media can provide learning’s to students.

Entertainment, instead of watching television, social media is considered a form of

entertainment by many people. Persuasion, media can also persuade and motivate people.

An example of persuasion is advertisement, it persuades people to purchase a product

from a shops, company, etc.

According to Coleman (2013), many research guides made by scholastic

administrators for students characterize a primary source as an original object or

document—firsthand data that was composed or made amid the time under examination

in which the aide incorporate precedents of different sorts of pre-digital age assets, for

example, journals, news film, and meetings. Also, traditional primary source archives

have a tendency to incorporate open voices as records of authentic occasions. Signs

demonstrate that the exploration guides are being reworked to oblige the effect of online

networking on enlightening assets.

Internet-based life extends a user’s achievement all the more rapidly, substantially

further, and at a more remarkable scale through words, pictures, and recordings. Online

life devices, for example, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram enable people to

share their voice in a media-driven model, with correspondence of data in a general sense

24
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

changing, the meaning of an essential source needs to mirror this change. Considering

that Twitter alone creates more than one million tweets day by day and that "an estimated

61% of adults and 74% of teens interact with social media sites," it is easy to see that "the

definition of event reporting is confounded with the instantaneous recording of historical

information."

A few analysts and researchers consider Twitter to be the most used platform to know

what's happening locally, broadly, and globally. In 2010, Twitter reported that it was

giving its advanced file of open tweets to the Library of Congress. "The Twitter digital

archive has extraordinary potential for research into our contemporary way of life," said

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington.

Social Media allows students, faculty, scholars, and the public to communicate and

collaborate in ways that disregard institutional boundaries. In September 2012,

journalism students at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University

utilized cell phones and internet based life to cover the Democratic National Convention

in Charlotte, North Carolina. The course not just enabled the understudies to acquire

viable work involvement yet additionally presented them to customary and rising

correspondence speculations and ideas related with online networking in the

computerized world.

Social Media Standards

The Marketing and Public Relations Department of Lane Community College

(2017) has published social media standards to their different social media platforms to

25
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

provide consistency for their audience and viewers. Its department and program goals are

to build and maintain relationship with their audience both online and offline, visitors

should experience Lane as a whole and develop strategies for the community. For the

audience or visitors of Lane Community, they will ensure that these standards will serve

relevant, connected and valuable. Lane has divided social media standards into three

parts.

Infrastructure

The page structure is important for any social media profiles because it gives the

audience validity where in Facebook for example, departmental social profiles should be

in pages and provide the viewer’s analytics package to be used to improve the overall

page. Lane also stated that the Youtube channel should be regularly updated and has to

have a new content every six to eight weeks. Also under Infrastructure are; Open

Information in which officials should avoid putting information into private and requiring

membership to view information. Linking and Connection in which profiles,

departmental website, main college website and main college profile should create

between linking and connection for its goal is to leave more informed and satisfied

information for the viewers. Logos and profile images are important for it should

incorporate the official logo of Lane to any of the sites to increase brand awareness.

Titles and profile names should have identifying keywords like “Lane” in the media

profiles and the use of acronyms must be avoided. For Unique URLs, departments and

programs should create unique identifying keywords for it will be easier and accessible
26
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

for the audience to find the link.

Operation

It was discussed that Administration under Operation is significant where Lane

has to assign two administrators from the department or program that will monitor the

safety of the social media profiles. Also under Operation are; Moderation for it is where

department and programs are responsible for the content posted online. Comments and

Conversation are important for Lane to build relationships with their viewers and should

have trust to the administrators. Ownership rights and copyright mean to give credits

whenever they borrow images, multimedia and text to the original author and writer.

Transparency in which users of social media will be more likely to see what post are

removed or changed which can give a sense of transparency. Lastly, Planning is where

departments and programs should provide a strategic plan for their media profiles.

Privacy

It is the confidential and private information of the audiences, person,

organization, or Lane and its students, employees, or alumni that must be safely kept. The

Lane Community College practice good ethical judgment.

According to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2018), the UNCG

employees and students created social media standards to use for the official business of

the University in where they support social media platforms in promoting the university

and engaging relationship with the people of the campus community. UNCG encourages

27
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

students, faculty members, departments and programs to create accounts that will be

actively present for the community.

The University stated that in order to maintain accounts it should have steps

where members of the University must have an effective strategy in order to get the

viewers attention and ensure the usage is within the stated terms be aware of terms and

services in social media. For UNCG accounts it is required to set the profiles to “public”

and for personal accounts, be mindful on posting online. Having a strong password is a

must in any social media platforms to secure all the files and information and to avoid

being hacked. It is not allowed to use the university e-mail address or password to

personal accounts or personal e-mail address for a university account, so both accounts

must be separated. Last step is the used of “UNCG” logos and trademarks which are only

for the students and member of the campus. Logos should be use for business purposes

only and not for personal or private gain.

Synthesis

The literature gathered by the researchers for this study came from validated and

reliable sources. To sum it up, the literature stated firstly, the social media where it is

defined by a prominent author. Then secondly, is the social media applications or site to

show what platform is most used by the users. Third, social as an information source

wherein it said how accessible and easier for the public to connect with social media in

just one clicking. Lastly is the social media standards which was divided into three parts,

28
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

namely: Infrastructure, Operation and Privacy which states that it will be ensured that

these standards will serve relevant, connected and valuable.

The findings of the study synthesized would be relevant to the study.. The

findings would help as to know what kind of standards the participants’ seek in choosing

social media as their information source and to what factor their standards would fall

into.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers will use the descriptive method research in determining the

participant’s standards in choosing social media as an information source. This study

used quantitative method by the use of cross-sectional to be administered to the selected

Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences Students in Lyceum of The Philippines

University Cavite in obtaining relevant information and results.

Descriptive design will be used by the researchers and survey questionnaires in

collecting and gathering information or data. It is a convenient way of design for Adi

Bhat (N.D) stated, descriptive research is a quantitative research method that attempts to

collect quantifiable information to be used for statistical analysis of the population

sample which would be a great help for the researchers later on in their study.

Participants of the Study

The participants of the study are the selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social

Sciences Students of the Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite, the researchers

will conduct a survey questionnaire about the said study. They are the chosen participants

since the researchers have much more access to the Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMSS) Strand of the said University. The participants are two morning shifts and one

afternoon shift in Grade 12.

Locale

30
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

The study will be conducted in the Lyceum of the Philippines University – Cavite.

The participants will answer the given survey questionnaire about the standards of

choosing a social media platform as an information source. The researchers chose the

place of implementation because aside from it is where the researchers study, the said

University is known for having well-educated and achieving students that can surely

answer the questions and provide reliable information about the researcher’s chosen topic

for their study. It will also give the researchers the needed information for the target

outcome. The selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students of the said

University are the chosen participants.

Sampling Technique

The sampling technique used for this study is convenience sampling.

Convenience sampling is one of the main types of non-probability methods in sampling,

wherein the subjects or respondents are easily accessible (Del Siegle, N.D) The

researchers chose this sampling method for the chosen respondents will only be surveyed

on a specific day and time, and there would be a possibility that the chosen population

would not be available at that time.

Data Gathering

The researchers would first submit a letter of approval to the headmaster to

conduct a survey questionnaire to their target participants which is the selected Grade 12

Humanities and Social Sciences students of Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite.

If the proposed letter is accepted and approved by the headmaster, the researchers will

proceed to conduct a survey questionnaire. First off, the researchers will distribute survey
31
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

questionnaire to the said participants. After conducting, the researchers and their answers

will determine the outcome of the study.

Research Instrument

The researchers chose a survey questionnaire as the research instrument for the

appropriateness not only in achieving the objectives of the study but also in providing

statistical data which is a great help for the researcher’s quantitative research method.

The survey questionnaire consists of the likert scale method wherein the participants

would either answer strongly disagree to strongly agree given to the standards of a social

media platform presented in the questionnaire.

The survey questionnaires are administered to the selected Grade 12 Humanities

and Social Sciences Students of Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite. It aims to

obtain relevant information in the standards of choosing social media platform as an

information source.

Data Analysis

The statistical formula that will be used for this study is the Frequency Percentage

Formula and the Mean and Standard Deviation, to determine the standard that mainly

contributed to the Selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social Science students of Lyceum

of the Philippines – Cavite in establishing their standards in choosing a social media

platform as an information source.

Formula:

32
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM

Standard Deviation Formula

Frequency Percentage Formula

P= x 100

Where:

P = percentage

f = frequency

N = total number of participants

After determining firstly the total number of participants and the frequency, the quotient

of the said two givens would be multiplied to 100 then the researchers will be able to

determine the percentage of each standard that contributed most to establish the

participants’ standards in choosing social media platform as their information source.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary or the research work undertaken, the conclusions

drawn and the recommendations made as an outgrow of this study.

Summary

47
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

This study was conducted in the Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite,

with a total of 100 respondents with the use of convenience sampling technique from the

selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students. The research design was

used is descriptive. The researchers used a likert scale survey questionnaire in order to

reveal the standards in choosing social media platform as an information source

according to Infrastructure and Operation and the information needed by the participants.

The special problem was conducted to determine the Standards in Choosing

Social Media Platform as an Information Source of Selected Grade 12 Humanities and

Social Sciences at Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite. It aims to find out the

appropriate answers to the following questions: 1.) What are the standards of the

Humanities and Social Sciences students of Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite

in choosing social media platform as an information source according to Infrastructure?

2.) What are the standards of the Humanities and Social Sciences students of Lyceum of

the Philippines University Cavite in choosing social media platform as an information

source according to Operation? 3.) What information is needed by Humanities and Social

Sciences students of Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite from social media?

Conclusion

This research investigated the Standards in Choosing a Social Media Platform as

an Information Source and what information is needed of selected Grade 12 Humanities

of Social Sciences students. Therefore, the results of the problem of the study will be

discussed in this.

To conclude the researchers found out what the respondents most likely to

48
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

consider in their standards when finding social media as an information source and the

information they needed from social media. As the results the current study distinguished

the respondents’ standards in choosing their social media platform as an information

source, as social media becomes a more heavily and increasingly used information source

even when searching for trendy, educational or news related information. The results

showed that the respondents’, with the highest percentage shown, under Twitter’s (48%)

and Facebook’s (51%) Infrastructure, verifies the accounts/pages to check whether if it’s

Recommendations

Social Media has been increasingly used as an information source, especially by the

millenials. The following are the recommendations for this study:

 This study would serve as a beneficiary, not only for the students but all to those

who uses the internet, the netizens.

 This study will also serve as a guide for the netizens to determine or to

distinguish the standard they fall in to whenever they look for an information.

 This study was only limited to a small population of people, and/or respondents, a

broader population or sample is recommended for better results, to also determine

49

LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAVITE

whether or not netizens have a pattern to their standards in choosing a social

platform as an information source (e.g. fast searching, recent updates or do they

pick the top results that shows).

 The study is not exclusively for social media platforms but also for sites or

websites as well.

 This study can also serve as a reference for future related studies that will be

conducted.

 The study will focus more on the gaps of the research which are the standards of

the respondents whenever they look for social media networks as their

information source.
