Informatics in Nursing Leadership: Leading in the Age of Technology
(Critique Paper)

Having been engaged in a digital society where modern technologies were continuously and
seemingly changing the way we live is a manifestation that we are living in an innovative world.
Technologies play an essential part in our life, by making it less complicated in various fields. One of the
fields where technologies were greatly demand is in healthcare. Apparently, as technology permeates
every aspect of our daily lives, using technology in health provision and care coordination is becoming a
core skill needed across the nursing profession. The more the technology and informatics continue to
evolve, the more the nurse leaders will be expected to put technology into practice. These technologies
support nurses to offer quality care to the patient. Yet, how does informatics as technology approach
could aid the nursing leaders in the delivery of patient care?
Upon reading the article which was all about "Informatics in Nursing Leadership: Leading in the
Age of Technology", gave me knowledge about the four main themes that considers the nurse leader's
role in informatics competency, interoperability, big data and competency. This article shows that the
four main themes are interrelated in terms of the necessity in providing better results of healthcare
delivery.
Including in the formulated four main themes was "Nursing Leadership's Role in Healthcare
Informatics". It shows how significant the role of nurse leaders in the field of healthcare. This theme
signifies that nurse leaders who use technology improve outcomes for all stakeholders, as well as other
nurses, consumers, patients and healthcare teams. Nurse leaders facilitate and empower health through
the use of healthcare informatics.
The second was "Nursing Leadership in Health Informatics Drives Interoperability", it implies that
nurse leader's role concerns in exchanging and making use of information with the help of the modern
technologies
Next was the "Nursing Leaders Need Big Data". With the help of big data, one could utilize it as
datasets for medicines, operational logistics, cases and decision-making systems. Thus, it could assist in
providing quality improvement in patient care.
The last one was "Nursing Leadership Informatics Competency Development". It also indicates
that nurse leaders must be competent enough in dealing with these technological improvements. Nurse
leaders must strengthen their knowledge and understanding in order to meet the goal in patient care.
The interrelatedness of the four main themes encompasses how the nurse leaders lead in the age
of technology. The nurse leaders influenced the technology implementation through utilizing and
integrating technologies in healthcare facility which modeled good problem-solving, facilitated
communications, advocate for the team and their recommendations across the facility, delivered
evidence-based practice and support for clinical decision-making. Thus, effective nurse leaders must
promote an environment that makes their staffs more passionate and enthusiastic about their
