Safe Flight Demonstrates
Powerline Detection System
The sound got louder as we closed in on the lines,
and faded as we tracked away from them. Using
the knob to adjust the sensitivity allowed the de-
vice to detect lines of various sizes and at various
distances and altitudes.
It should only take one 30-minute flight for a
pilot to become reasonably proficient with trans-
lating the growls into the proximity and orien-
tation of nearby wires. And should the pilot al-
ready be familiar with the location of powerlines,
the aural warnings can be silenced, which then
activates an amber MUTE indicator.
Contact SFIC for a list of aircraft its power-
line detection system is currently approved for.

Safe Flight’s powerline detection system provides an aural warning and activates a red light (circled) to alert the
pilot of a wire hazard. It can detect high voltage transmission lines, as well as small residential service cables.

Check. Check. And Check.

Better situational awareness can help make flying safer for all of us. That’s why the FAA recently
enacted new rules for commercial adoption of both radar altimeters and HTAWS (Helicopter
Terrain Awareness and Warning Systems). Radar altimeters will be required for all Part 135
operators – and air ambulance operators will also be required to equip with HTAWS – by April
24, 2017. What’s more, most aircraft flying in U.S. controlled airspace will also need ADS-B “Out”
capability by year-end of 2019. All of these technologies are aimed at helping pilots keep their
distance from flight path hazards: With visual and aural advisories. Crisp 5-color terrain shading
displays. Real-time traffic alerts. And with voice callouts that announce height above terrain when
descending below 500 feet. For all these must-have solutions, Garmin is your go-to source. So why
wait? Call your dealer now to avoid that last-minute scheduling crunch.

Marenco Announces Sale BLR Tailboom Strakes Receive
of Africa’s First SKYe SH09
Marenco Swiss Helicopter has
announced the first sale of the SKYe
Certified Performance Increase
SH09 in Africa to Henley Air Pty Ltd.
This South African letter of intent
brings the order-book of MSH to a
total of 60 units.
Henley Air, established in 1995,
is based at Rand Airport, Johannes-
burg. The fleet began with one Bell
Jet-Ranger, and today the team pro-
vides clients with a variety of single
and multi-engine aircraft to meet the
requirements of the market ranging
from passenger transport, commer-
cial, utility and private charter as
well as helicopter training.

believe that the operators who maintain large legacy fleets are
the most in tune to the opportunities to improve operational ef-

“For that reason, once Bell Helicopter endorsed the FastFin,
which they did in 2010, the commercial market became very ag-
gressive in fleet modifications with FastFin, whereas the military
segment didn’t respond much at all until a series of technical
briefings were provided to the world’s militaries and without fail,
once they’d been technically briefed, now they’ve been getting to
do their fleet modifications.”

Enstrom Brings TH180 Prototype to
Heli-Expo 2015
With its successful first flight completed, Enstrom Helicop-
ter will bring its newly designed, two-seat TH180 helicopter
to Orlando, Fla., to display in its booth (1828) at Heli-Expo
2015. The single-engine piston, which will be marketed
primarily as an entry-level rotorcraft trainer and personal
aircraft, made its debut in mockup form at Heli-Expo 2014
in Anaheim, Calif., but was not flown for the first time un-
til Feb. 6, 2015, at the company’s facilities in Menominee,
Mich.
With several sections of its skin removed so that engineers
could see the internal parts while functioning, the TH180
completed a tethered, 30-minute ground run, followed by
a 30-minute free flight with chief pilot Bill Taylor at the
controls. According to Orlando Alaniz, director of sales and
marketing, everyone was very pleased with the results. Enstrom pilot Bill Taylor lifts the Enstrom TH180 into the air for its first flight on Feb. 6. The newly

Olivier Gamard, head of Guimbal certification and air-

forward and raised no technical issues. The EASA certifi-

requirements and reciprocal agreements, but different ex-
periences and different compliance methods made some
work necessary. The FAA also requested to carry out again
some flight testing in order to confirm the remarkable
flight characteristics of the Cabri G2”.
