THE RESPONSIBILITY OF MIND
Again, Thoreau alerts our attention, where Meigs merely bores us.
But the Meigses of his time (I suppose plenty of them survive in
today's Chambers of Commerce) would have seen in Thoreau's
passage, had they ever noticed it, only further proof of Thoreau's
irresponsibility. Emerson also had moments of asking whether the
machines might not damage the workers; but he, unlike Thoreau,
was so in tune with his times as to be able to banish such appre-
hensions and to say in resounding amplitude, "Machinery and
Transcendentalism agree well. Stage-Coach and Railroad are burst-
ing the old legislation like green withes." His essay "Napoleon" in
Representative Men, although at the end it brings to bear the same
pompous moral judgment on the man of action that finds Shake-
speare guilty of frivolity, is in substance his love letter to the entre-
preneurs, to the practical men who brushed aside the "old legisla-
tion" and were building railroads.
Likewise Theodore Parker, the professional reformer pitching
into every cause that offered itself, was worried about the condition
of the laboring classes; however, he even more than Thoreau was
the Yankee handy with tools, and to him the machines in themselves
were as much objects of sheer beauty as to Francis Cabot Lowell.
Parker hailed the factory as a creation of intellect. The observer of
a carpet manufactory, he said, departs "wondering, thinking what
a head it must be which planned the mill, a tool by which the Mer-
rimack transfigures wool and dye stuff into handsome carpets, serv-
iceable for chamber, parlor, staircase, or meeting-house." Occasion-
ally the Old Testament prophet strain in Parker would predict that
just so soon as the machine threatened to afford workers the leisure
