INTRODUCTION
Being a teacher is one of the least paid professions in the country. Teaching is
the profession that aims to produce professionals but is considered as a low income job
compared to others.
Teaching is not an easy job. Most of the time, they do tasks that are not according
to their profession. Handling young people is hard. It is the teachers obligation to mold
these children to build their full potential and someday, be a law abiding citizen that
serves his fellowmen.
A role model is a person who inspires and encourages us to strive for greatness,
live to our fullest potential and see the best in ourselves. A role model is someone we
admire and someone we aspire to be like. We learn through them, through their
commitment to excellence and through their ability to make us realize our own personal
growth. We look to them for advice and guidance.
A role model can be anybody: a parent, a sibling, a friend but some of our most
influential and life-changing role models are teachers.
Teachers are founts of experience. They have already been where their students
are going, undergone what they will go through and are in a position to pass along
lessons, not only regarding subject matter, but lessons on life.
Being a teacher is a hard job. In schools, they are not just teaching staffs but also,
parents, friends, counsellor and more tasks that are beyond their profession. They do
not just make students be busy for hours, they help them to be equipped to face the
world. They are instruments to make another effective instrument.
According to TeacherPH (2018), The Senate must have been more than willing to
implement proposed bills to provide the public teachers in the Philippines a decent
increase altogether with benefits but up to now none of the plans were actually realized.
The government officials should make an action to increase the salary that they
deserved. There are eight reasons that will state why public school teachers deserved a
salary increase. Extended working hours, after the class, they do not go to their home
directly they have to do something and bring it home to finish it such as lesson plans,
creating examinations, checking test papers and many more. So their working hours is
extended not just that they also go home late.
Being the foster parents to their students, most of the time the students spent their
time and life in the school, so that’s why the relationship between the teachers and the
students will reach to the point that they will be the great influencers and a good role
model for them.
Paying for educational stuff with personal funds, the teachers need to spend their
personal funds in order to buy and provide educational stuff for the students.
Other countries that has high paying salary are Germany and Denmark. Teachers
in Canada, the United States, and New Zealand reach their maximum salary towards
the end of their career and achieve close to their top salary after fifteen years’
experience.
In the United States, High School Teachers made an average salary of $59,170 in
2017. The states and districts that pay High School Teachers the highest average
salary are Alaska ($85,420), New York ($83,360), Connecticut ($78,810), and California
($77,390).
In the Philippines, the average income of teachers is Php 20,000. Public School
Teachers salary is on average 72% higher than private schools here in the Philippines.
The average monthly salary of Elementary and High School Teachers is PhP19,600 in
public schools and PhP 11,400 in private schools.
Nationally coordinated protests and activities marked this year’s celebration of the
World Teachers’ Day, as hundreds of gathered to call on the government to prioritize
their welfare especially in their salary.
During President Rodrigo Duterte’s 4th State of the Nation Address last July, he
expressed his goal to see an increase in salaries for public school teachers and other
government workers. Doubling the salary of public school teachers under his
administration was one of Duterte’s campaign promises.
The Senators of the 18th Congress on July, made bills aiming to reach this goal.
Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara wants public school teachers to receive at least
P36,000 monthly. Senator Francis Pangilinan also made a bill on additional
compensation of Php 10,000 per month. Senator Nancy Binay also has her own version
of the bill that aims to bring the monthly salary of teachers to P28,000 and P16,000. She
also wants to give additional "educational assistance" to public school teachers. They
said that adding teachers’ salaries by P5,000 would require an additional P75 billion
annually.
One of the effects would be is that doubling teachers’ salaries would cost an
additional PhP343.7 billion of the gross domestic product. Increasing their salary
impacts our economy.
If we give the money for the welfare of our teachers, surely it will go to its
intended use with a ‘return of investment’ in several folds.
They should increase the pay of teachers because every peso will be worth it.
This study aims to evaluate the teachers’ in Rodriguez National High School
regarding with their salary. The researchers asked the teachers’ satisfaction with their
salary and their stand to current administration plan to increase it.
