ENGLISH INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

UNIT NINE
Vocabulary Practice
1. Size classification is a process of separating granular or powdered material into batches of large,
intermediate, and small particles.
2. Grizzly is a size classification device for large lumps or solids. Grizzly consists of inclined metal
bars with spaces between them. Any material smaller than the space between the bars will fall
through whilst the large ones will slide to the end of the grizzly where they are collected.
3. Sieve is a size classification device made of wire cloth or perforated sheet metal.
Shieves work when the small particles on shaken shieves fall through the openings and larger
particles remain on top.
A shieve which is made of wire cloth is known as screen.
4. Sedimentation is usually used to separating particles suspended solid in a liquid.
5. Thickener is a continuous sedimentation or settling. In other words, thickener separates
suspended solid in a liquid continuously.
6. Solid particles separated from liquid by forcing liquid through woven cloth with openings too
fine to allow the particles to pass.
7. Filter cloth is a special finely woven cloth used for filtration.
8. Filter press is a structure on which metal or plastic plater and frames are suspended and pressed
together.
9. Filtrate is a clear liquid which flows from a filter after the solid have been removed.
10. Filtration cake(usually called cake) is a removed solids during the filtration.
11. Continuous filter is a device for carry out filtration as a continuous process.
12. Centrifuge usually separate solids from liquids or between liquids different densities which
cannot mix.
13. Cyclone separator usually separate solid particles from a gas.
14. Gas scrubber is used for separate solid particles from a gas and also one gas to another.

Discussion
1. Some material for which a grizzly might be used is large lumps or solids.
2. Grizzlies can work only for a large particles.
3. Sieves are used for small particles.
4. Sieve is made of perforated sheet metal or wire cloth.
5. Screen is a kind of shieve which made of wire cloth. Materials may be passed through a series of
shieves, each have holes smaller than the last.
6. A weighed quantity of granular or powdered material is passed through a series of vibrating
screens; the fraction remains on each screen is weighed and calculated.
7. Standard shieves used because they have been set up for the series used so that the results from
one laboratory will be comparable to the result from any other laboratory.
8. The force that impact sedimentation is gravity.
9. Dry solid does not discharged from a thickener. The solids removed from a sedimentation device
always contain liquid; they are watery.
10. Filtration works by forcing the solid-bearing liquid through a material called woven cloth. The
material permits liquid to pass but keep the solids.
11. Filteraids are usually used for precoating because filteraids provide finer openings than the filter
cloth.
12. The most common device used for filtration batching are plate-and-frame filter presses.
13. Filter cloth is placed over both sides of each plate and the assembly of the plates and frames.
14. On a plate-and-frame filter press, the cake trapped in the frames on the surface of the filter cloth.
15. Filtrate: a liquid which flows from a filter after filter cake.
Filter Cake: a removed solid during filtration.
16. If filter presses are full of cake, the device must be cleaned. It can be shut down or connected to
another filter cloth.
17. The process is expensive because it is not only provide more than one filter but also cleaning
which is a tedious process that require lots of labor.
18. Two advantages of filter presses are one, they need less cost to buy and for maintenance; the
second one they are rarely can go wrong.
19. Continuous filter are expensive because it used complex machines which has higher cost and hard
at maintenance.
20. The most common type of continuous filter is rotary drum type.
21. The blade that shaves cake off a rotating drum filter is known as doctor blade.
22. Centrifuge works by collecting the solids at the wall of the spinning container, and clear liquid is
removed from the center. When sufficient solids have been collected, the centrifuge must be
stopped and the solids scraped out.
23. Centrifuge usually used for separating solids from liquids and liquid from liquid whilst has
different densities.
24. The machine which separate gases or solid from air is gas scrubber. Gas scrubber usually used for
the reason where particles is too fine for cyclone separator.
25. One of the simplest devices for separating fairly large particles of solid or liquid from air or any
other gas is called Cyclone Separator.
26. Droplets of water are passed through the gas being scrubbed, they attach to the particles and carry
them out of the scrubber.

Review
1. Sedimentation: Particles settle by gravity.
2. Filtration: Liquid is forced through the cloth.
3. Size classification: Separating solid according the size.
4. Filtrate: Clear liquid from a filter.
5. Continuous Filter: Filter for a long time without stopping.
6. Cyclone separator: Swirls a gas to separate solid from it.
7. Centrifuge: Uses centrifugal force to separated materials
8. Filter Press: a batch filter
9. Grizzly: parallel bars for size classification
10. Gas scrubber: separates solid from gas using a water spray.
11. Screen: a kind os shieve
12. Thickener: carry out sedimentation continuously.
13. Filter Cake: solid removed during filtration.
14. Filter cloth: a special finely woven cloth
