CONSTRUCTION AND LAUNCHING OF SCT-1 AND SCT-2 ROCKETS
Early i n November 1957, a l i t t l e , l e s s than one month a f t e r the
first sputnik was launched, engineer Walter C. Buchanan discussed with
t h i s w r i t e r some of the aspects of t h e launching of the US A t l a s rocket.
H i s i n t e r e s t i n and knowledge of t h i s subject were revealed by
the books on astronautics and rockets on the desk of engineer Buchanan
who was deputy secretary of what a t t h a t time was the S e c r e t a r i a t of
Communications and Public Works. Engineer Buchanan said t h a t it was
very necessary and advisable f o r Mexico t o study and experiment i n t h i s
f i e l d , within the scope of available resources. He said t h a t it was
indispensable f o r Mexico t o keep up t o date on these aspects of modem

A few days l a t e r , roughly i n the middle of November, engineer
Buchanan had obtained approval from t h e President and confidentially
informed us t h a t we were going t o hold a number of meetings which, among

others, would be attended by engineers Jorge Ruelas Tejeda and Joaquin
Durand
These meetings were held before the end of November; the f i x s t
of them was held a c t u a l l y on

We made such rapid progress t h a t we decided a t our f i f t h meeting
t h a t we had talked enough and t h a t we could now proceed t o applying the
theory of design, in a concrete form, i n order t o build the. first rocket.
Engineer Duran was commissioned t o design a solid-fuel rocket
and engineer B e c e r r i l was given instructions t o design a liquid-fuel
rocket in which we would use e t h y l alcohol and l i q u i d oxygen, A s i t s
p r i n c i p a l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c , it would burn 1 kg of 75% alcohol per second;
i n accordance with technical infomnation available on the V-2 rocket t h e
p i l o t model f o r t h e SCT-I would e s s e n t i a l l y be based on the characteris-
t i c s of t h i s German rocket. Engineer Ruelas was put in charge of the
aerodynamic shape of the rocket,
A s we i n j e c t 75% e t h y l alcohol i n t o the combustion chamber, the
heat, which required 25% water t o evaporate, reduces the temperature t o
2 , 0 0 0 ~ C; a t t h a t temperature, t h e dissociation of water vapor molecules
and C02 i s a t a minimum; therefore t h e average molecular weights of t h e
gases i s a t a maximm,which i s very good f o r obtaining maximum t h r u s t a t
takeoff without expansion,
The rocket was designed with t h e help of technical and s p e c i a l i s t
personnel from the Director General of Operational Railroads and was
supervised by our instructor, engineer Walter C. Buchanan, After t h e
completion of t h e design phase, we proceeded t o t h e construction phase;
f o r t h i s purpose, we s e t up a modest and simple workshop a t Colonia
Portales inMexico City, The engine, the alcohol tank, a s w e l l a s the
l i q u i d oxygen tank, and t h e pressure accumulator, .&ere constructed of
inoxidable chrom-nickel s t e e l ; the outer body was made of laminated
alminum. Everything, including the i n j e c t i o n system, was b u i l t in our
workshop.
We must point out t h a t a11 the materials used were obtained in
Mexico and t h a t it was not necessary t o import any material; besides,
a l l material used have the required q u a l i t y which enabled it t o take the
s t r e s s e s required and the very low temperatures (the temperature of
l i q u i d oxygen a t atmospheric pressure i s about -1830 C). One thing t h a t
took a l o t more time was t h e adjustment of t h e i n j e c t i o n pressure nozzles
we planned t o i n s t a l l ; we wanted the combustion chamber pressure t o be
15.3.4 kg/sq cm (215 ~ b s / s q inch); we were t r y i n g t o get the c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s
necessary f o r maximum u t i l i z a t i o n of 75% e t h y l alcohol,
Before we could f i n i s h t h e construction of t h e rocket, we had t o
measure t h e power of the engine p r i o r t o t h e launching of the rocket.
We a l s o had t o build a gantry tower t o give t h e rocket i n i t i a l direction
on takeoff; because of t h e way t h e rocket was designed, it was going t o
have t o be controlled from t h e ground, One of the attached i l l u s t r a t i o n s
shows the launching tower which looked l i k e a gun b a r r e l with a length of
about 1 0 m.
