Name: Date: .

Team-work Design Project: It is students’ responsibility to organize the teams. Each team can
have up to three students. Due to the difference of the grading rubric, the graduate students can only
form the team with graduate students. This is an open-end problem. Size the members of the bridge
shown in the accompanying figure for a case in which traffic is backed up with a total of four trucks
equally spaced on the bridge. A typical truck has a payload weight of 64,000 lb and a cab weight of
8,000 lb. As a starting point, you may use one cross section for all beam elements. You may also
assume one cross section for all truss members. The roadbed weights 1,500 lb/ft and is supported by
I-beams. Use standard steel I-beam sizes. Design your own truss configuration. The bridge is
supported by six parallel I-beam and truss structures. In your analysis, you may assume that the
concrete column does not deflect significantly. Write a brief report discussing how you came up the
final design (the max deflection and locations, and max stress and the locations, safety factor for
yield strength design, and plus buckling design for graduate student team only for full credit).

Grading rubric reference for the report (Total 100%):

• Design parameters and conditions (10%);
• Batch file input (10%);
• Initial undeformed model figure showing element number, node number, boundary
constraints and load applied (10%);
• Deformed model figure showing reactions (10%);
• Solution data, including nodal displacement, reactions, element axial force, axial stress, and
maximum and minimum stresses (10%);
• Data analysis and failure examination (safety factor calculation for yield strength for
undergraduate team, and plus buckling calculation for graduate team) and conclusion
(30%);
• Report quality (20%).
• Each team needs to submit one report.
