AN ANALYSIS OF CLASSROOM INTERACTION IN LEARNING SPEAKING
SKILL FOR YOUNG LEARNERS AT SDN 17 PALEMBANG

A. Reasearch Problems

Based on the title of this research “An analysis of classroom interaction in learning speaking
skill for young learners at SDN 17”, the writer formulated the problems of the study as follows:

1. What are the classroom interactions in learning Speaking skill process at SDN 17
Palembang like ?
2. Do classroom interaction significantly contribute to student’s speaking performance at SDN
17 Palembang ?

B. Research Method

A. Research design

To answer the problem, the writer used qualitative research as the research design.
Qualitative research is focusing on the students characteristic and also the interaction between
learning processes of speaking. According to Arikunto (2010:21), one of the characteristic of
qualitative research is descriptive. To describe the interaction between teacher and student in the
classroom, the writer used descriptive study. The goal of descriptive study is a comprehensive
summarization, in everyday term, of specific events experienced by individuals or groups of
individuals (Lambret, 2012:255). The aim of this research was to find out what are the classroom
interactions in learning speaking skills and does classroom interaction significantly contribute to
student’s speaking performance at SDN 17 Palembang.
B. The Research site and Participants

This research site is in SDN 17 Palembang located in Jl. Enim Lorok Pakjo, Demang Lebar
Daun, Kec. Ilir Barat I, Palembang City, South Sumatra. The Participants in this research was the
teacher and the students in sixth grades, the writer conducted the research in 3 classes consist of
6A, 6B, 6C.
The reason for choosing this school as the research site are because this school has;
1. Accredited an A.
2. Implemented 2013 curriculum.

Due to the reason above, the researcher is interested in conducting a study entitled “An analysis
of classroom interaction in learning speaking skill for young learners at SDN 17 Palembang”

C. Data Collection

For collecting data ,the writer used the instruments; observation and interview to answer the
problem. The observation and Interview in this study was aimed at sixth grade students of SDN
17 Palembang.
1. In observe the writer used direct observation to collecting the data. He used sound
recorder and video recorder to record the activity in learning process of speaking at
SDN 17 Palembang. Observation is used to see the real activity in teaching and learning
process in the classroom. Observation can be subdivided in several ways. One useful is
between direst observation and indirect observation (Goh, 2007:109).
2. Interview is a direct method of data collection which is based on the interview where the
interviewer asks some questions to respondent. Exploring the views, experiences, beliefs
of individual participants are the aims of interview. Ary et al. (2010:438) stated that
interview is used to gather data from people about opinions, beliefs, and feelings about
situations in their own words. Interview would be conducted to strengthen the result of
observation. In this research, the writer interviewed the teacher and some of the students
from sixth grade, especially students in 6A, 6B, 6C.
D. Data Analysis

In this research, the writer uses triangulation technique to analyze the data. Triangulation is
used to develop the validity of the qualitative research. This technique prefers the effectiveness
the result of the research. Musfiqon (2012:169) states that there are three kinds of triangulation,
they are methodological triangulation, source triangulation and theoretical triangulation.
According to Mubarok (2015:56), triangulation is the effort to checking the accuracy of data or
information obtained by researchers from many different angles as possibly by reducing the bias
that occurs at the time of data collection and analysis.
