Abstract

Water Quality Index (WQI) was employed to evaluate the quality of raw water of
Al-abassai branch for drinking water purposes.

Water samples from four different stations along Al-abassai branch for nine
months from jan-2016 to sep-2016 were collected. Twelve water quality parameters were
analyzed including total hardness(TH), turbidity (Turb.), (pH), electrical conductivity
(EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride (Cl-), calcium (Ca+2), sodium(Na+),
magnesium (Mg+2) and potassium (K+), Total suspended solids (TSS), Sulphate(SO4-2).

Data analysis showed that the water quality parameters of Al-abassai branch
exceeded the WHO except (Ph , TH , EC , TDS , SO4-2 , Mg+2and Turb) that were
compatible with the drinking water standards.

The average annual overall WQI for drinking water was found to be (86.66)
through the study period. From this analysis, the quality of Al-abassai branch was
classified as "Very poor" at the branch upstream near station (A1) to (A4) for drinking.
The monthly WQI variation ranged (76.58) in Jan-2016 to (98.793) in Sep-2016, and
classified from (very poor) for drinking water quality.

The high WQI obtained was a result of the various human activities taking place
along the branch banks.
