LICK 20
Martin says...

Congrats, you made it up to the “Monster Lick”. I’m not kidding you, this one is REALLY
tough to play. It is a mini solo made up from several licks as opposed to a single one, so
take each of these bits at a time.

It starts out with a tapping/string skipping sequence that is rather easy to understand
(straight ascending, descending) but hellishly hard to play due to the fact that you’re
skipping between the two E-strings at an extreme pace. Moving on we head into a
descending Petrucci-style legato bit that again is played purely from muscle memory, where
I just burst out some of the patterns I’ve been practicing in the past. Make sure you land on
the right note at the right time to round it off nicely.

The next phrase I put in there to save this lick from being a complete shred-fest. It features
our trusted Bmaj7 arpeggio, some chromatic passing tones and Country-esque double stop.

And to finish things off, there’s a bit of hyper speed picking! Again, this can be subdivided
into smaller steps. First there’s a rather well known Paul Gilbert-style sixtuplet sequence,
that heads into another sequence for descending back. The hardest part will be to make a
smooth transition into the economy picked bit that follows up, that uses a few arpeggios to
mix up the otherwise purely scalar run.
