ABSTRACT

ISMAH, KADAR., 2010, ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF “QUEEN

FRUITS “ MANGOSTEEN (Garcinia mangostana. L.) PEELS
METHANOLIC ETRACT FRACTIONS AGAINST DPPH RADICAL,
THESIS, FACULTY OF PHARMACY, SETIA BUDI UNIVERSITY,
SURAKARTA.

The aim of the experiment was to find out radicals scavenging antioxidant
activity of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana, L) peels methanolic etract fractions,
potency of tha fractions, the most active fraction as radicals scavenging, and also
the antioxidant activity in each fraction with methanolic extract and positive
control of mangosteen peels against DPPH radical with IC50 parameter.
Mangosteen peels were extracted by maceration method using methanol as
solvent. The obtained extract was partitioned with water and n-hexane, and then
with cloroform and ethyl acetate. The antioxidant activities of the obtained
fractions were tested against DPPH radical. The radicals scavenging activities
were measured with spectrophotometer at 517 nm wavelength and the IC50 values
were determined. The experiment used Rutin as positive control.
The result of the experiment showed that mangosteen peels had
antioxidant activity with IC50 values of rutin, undissolve fraction, ethyl acetate
fraction, methanolic etract, water fraction, chloroform and n-hexane fractions,
were 5.11 ppm, 5.55 ppm, 9.26 ppm, 21.24 ppm, and 29.49 oom, 38.50 ppm, and
57.51 ppm respectively. Fraction with the highest antioxidant activity belonged to
extract methanolic undissolve fraction.
