Overview Brief overview of storytelling, and a discussion on why storytelling is
important. Followed by a reading of an Indigenous story about, with a
discussion on some of the cultural elements of the book. Lastly the student
will work on finding their own story, and turning that into a brief storybook.
And at the end of the class the students will share their story.

 By the end of the lesson students will be able to understand that storytelling is used
within indigenous cultures to pass on important information
 By the end of the lesson students will have told/ wrote down a story that is important to

Formative During the writing stage of the lesson the teacher will go around and

Napi: the anthology, level 3 reader

Introduction Time
Attention Have students pick between two books to listen too. 10-15 min
Grabber The stories are two different Napi Blackfoot stories
Read the book and have a quick discussion on it and a debrief
on what the book is about.
Body
Learning Have students work on finishing their story. 20-25min
Activity #1
Story topic ideas:
 What is YOUR story?
 What is your family like?
 Do you have a story that your family tells you about you?
 Write about an event you remember well. Why is this
important? What does your story tell about your identity
and your place in the world?

Some examples could include: a family trip, a place your family


goes to often, a story your family has told you,

Students will create a book that tells their own story. As a group
we will create a book by folding or stapling pieces of paper.
Students will then create a book that tells a story about them or an
event in their life. After writing the story, students will be able to
illustrate their stories.

Learning Once students have completed their stories or that the time is up, 5-10 min
activity #2 have the students go back to the carpet to share their stories. Go
around the room and encourage each other to share their story
with the group.
Closure
End of Lesson The students can keep their work, and introduce what you are 2min
going to do next week.
 Next week we are going to learn about Trickster stories
