1. INSTAGRAM FOR BUSINESS

1.1. INTRODUCTION
If you’re a business owner, a marketing associate responsible for social media channels
of your company or simply an individual who is interested in the latest digital trends,
then surely Instagram’s popularity shouldn’t come as a surprise to you. You’ve probably
heard about it from colleagues, friends, family members and downloaded it for yourself.
Then you started posting pictures, videos, Boomerangs even, but simply couldn’t get a
hold of it? Despite the fact you’ve been putting too much effort and time into Instagram,
you simply couldn’t figure out how some people earn money through Instagram or find
it hard to believe some websites have the majority of their traffic thanks to Instagram.
Moreover, some businesses and web shops even get most of their customers based
on their Instagram presence. If you’d like to know how they’ve managed to create their
products or services into Insta-worthy content that helps them grow their business,
creates genuine brand awareness and brings great engagement from target audience,
then congratulations – downloading this eBook proved to be the best decision you’ve
made today because here we’ll cover how to tackle Instagram and use it for your own
benefit.

1.2. WHAT IS INSTAGRAM AND WHY SHOULD YOU USE IT?

First things first – what is Instagram? If you already know what it is and have been using
it before, then think of this chapter as an overview of everything you’ve known so far.
For those who have yet to encounter Instagram for the first time, let me break down a
couple of things for you. Instagram is a mobile app for sharing photos, videos and other
visual content. Now, you might wonder, what makes it so different from, for example,
its big brother, Facebook? Obviously, you can share photos and videos on Facebook
as well, but what made Instagram different since day one is the fact it highlights good,
quality, astonishing and appealing content. Instagram basically serves as a replacement
for professionally curated photoshoot-commercials or magazine covers. Even their
official “About Us” section says that Instagram’s purpose is to capture and share the
world’s moments on the service so it’s no surprise Instagram has become the home for

INSTAGRAM FOR BUSINESS 2.

visual storytelling for everyone from celebrities, newsrooms and brands to teens, musicians
and anyone with a creative passion.
All right, now that we’ve sorted WHAT is Instagram, here’s the answer to the question
WHY you should use it. Instagram is a community of more than 800 million (!!!) people
from all around the world. This means that if you’re a business owner or a marketing
associate in your company who is on the lookout for new ways to reach your customers,
then Instagram is a place to be at the moment. Instagram allows you to connect with
people in a way Facebook, Twitter, Youtube of Snapchat never could. And, if you do it
right, Instagram could be your prime channel among all other social media networks.

1.3. INSTAGRAM 101: HOW TO START?

Like I said in the beginning, this is going to be a guide for newbies, all those who don’t
know anything about Instagram and incorporating it into their social media strategy.
That’s why I’ll break it down for them how to open an Instagram account.
So, since Instagram operates as a mobile app, you’ll need your phone or a tablet and
a few minutes to set everything up. Once you’ve downloaded the app to your phone,
you’ll need to fill in a couple of required blank fields (picture below).

INSTAGRAM FOR BUSINESS 3.

My suggestion is to choose one main e-mail that person in charge uses and will be
checking daily in case you have any trouble with your account (e.g., if you forget your
password). In the “Full Name” bar, write the name of your business, company, product
or whatever you’re trying to showcase through Instagram. But here’s the thing… Let’s
say you have a company called Kitchen Helper and you’re selling (yes, you guessed it)
– kitchen appliances. Don’t make one Instagram account for each of your products of
kitchen appliances. Just make one general Kitchen Helper account that you’ll use to
show all of your products. The same thing goes if you are a small local entrepreneur
who produces handmade coffee mugs: you’ll use just one Instagram account for your
business.
However, big companies like L’oreal have multiple Instagram accounts, depending on
a special line of products that they are promoting on their account. For example, they
use @botanicals_freshcare just for their Botanicals line of hair products, and have a
@pureologyus account for Pureology leave on products for color-treated hair.
All right, one more important thing: make sure username you choose to have on
Instagram is the name of your company or brand or product. If you have a company
called Kitchen helper, then it would be wise to use @kitchen_helper as your Instagram
username. It might seem blunt to some of you for stating the obvious, but trust me, a lot
of people don’t know this. Don’t use numbers or any special characters in your username
(if it’s not already in the name of your brand). So, don’t use @kitchen_helper123 as your
username because it looks spammy and people will have a hard time finding you on
Instagram.
The last thing is to choose a password and I can’t give you professional advice here other
than: make it hard for people to hack it. Again, pretty obvious, but worth mentioning. If
you put kitchenhelper123 as your password, then you deserve to be hacked. I’m sorry,
but someone had to say it to you. Harsh, but true. Your password for Instagram, and for
any other social media, should be a bunch of random letters, numbers, and characters
that make no sense. Write it down or simply use Last Pass and don’t worry you’ll forget
it. You can always request a new password from Instagram to your email if you forget it.

INSTAGRAM FOR BUSINESS 4.

Setting up your profile
Yaay, now you have your account! All right, let’s start with your profile picture. First
of all, hands down, you need to have it. It’s not negotiable. It doesn’t look good or
professional to leave it blank. Depending on a type of your business, it would be nice
to have something relatable, for example, your logo or your main product. If you’re not
using Instagram for personal branding, don’t use your own photo.
After you’ve picked the right profile picture, make sure to fill the name bar as well.
By this I mean actual “Name” field in the Settings of your profile, not your Instagram
username.

So why is that important? Well, your name and username are the only fields that
Instagram considers in search queries which means you absolutely need to make sure
that the name you use in your Instagram bio is the one your followers and customers
are searching for! Once again, I recommend using the same name as you did in the
username, the name of your company, brand or product line.
But wait, there’s more to it! You’ve read in the last paragraph the term “Instagram bio”
and you might be confused what it is. Well, bio is a short description bar at the top of

INSTAGRAM FOR BUSINESS 5.

your profile that serves as an info box about who you are, what you do, what you’re
offering AND it should be written in a way people want to engage with and give you a
follow.
Think about what sets you apart from your competition. Do you have a unique set of
products or special services might be of interest to your followers? This information
should definitely be in your Instagram bio to serve as an introduction, but it can also
determine whether or not people will decide to follow your account. If they don’t follow
you, they won’t see your updates and are less likely to become your customers. So
make sure you write a good and informative bio!
What can really improve your Insta-bio game are keywords which should be included
in a way they reflect your core values and the core values of your target audience. Put
yourself in a position of your ideal customer for a moment and think what would make
you follow some Instagram account. What would you want to see every time you log
into Instagram? And what keywords will help you resonate with your target audience
the most? Using keywords helps users better understand who you are, what you have
to offer, and whether or not your account is relevant to them! Don’t be shy with emojis
either, they attract attention so feel free to use some that make sense, but don’t go
overboard.

Next thing you should put on your profile is your website link! Once people discover
your account, they’ll want to know more about your company, products and what you
do and be sure to give them access through your Instagram account to your website.
Currently, Instagram only gives users one clickable link on their profile, and it would be
a shame not to take advantage of it. This link can lead people to your homepage or blog,
but if you have an e-commerce business, then you might need to update this link from
time to time to send your followers toward your latest products, sales or promotions.
Obviously, to make it more obvious, you’ll need to state that in your Instagram captions
(we’ll get to that later).

Apart from having a website link, as a business-related Instagram account, it would be

advisable to share your email in the bio. It makes it simple for your followers to contact
you or customer care if they have some problem.

INSTAGRAM FOR BUSINESS 6.

All right, let’s summarize everything:

After setting up your account by choosing the right username, you need to
upload a profile picture that gives your target audience an idea of who you are,
what you do and is basically a visual representation of your business
Choose the right name which will be visible in bold to every new person coming
to your Instagram account, but also, it will be searchable so others could find
you as well
Write compiling bio where you’ll explain who you are, what you do and target
your niche audience by using keywords
Link to your website, blog or web shop
Provide a way for your followers to get in touch with you by sharing an email
address

And that’s it folks! At least to begin with. Once you’ve done all these steps, you’re ready
to start posting content. What kind of content? Well, we’ll cover that in the next chapter.

INSTAGRAM FOR BUSINESS 7.

2
WHAT TO POST?
2. WHAT TO POST?

Since its first launch in 2010, Instagram quickly became a favorite social network for a lot
of people, which is not surprising. Here’s the thing. Everyone’s on Facebook these days.
I have it, sure, but my mom has it, my aunt, my cousins… every single person I went to
school with has it. That one person I once met in the bathroom of some nightclub has
it – everyone. The problem with Facebook is that most people have this feeling they
NEED TO accept friend requests from everyone they’ve ever talked to. Before you know
it, your feed is full of baby pictures from people you don’t really care about, vacation
pictures from acquaintances whose last name you wouldn’t know if you ever saw them
somewhere on the street and political rants from your distant relatives who annoyed
you ever since you were a kid.
With Instagram, it’s different – you DON’T have to follow anyone you don’t want to. The
main point is that everyone’s there so they could look at pretty pictures, get inspired, like
few photos and then go back to their daily lives. Another key point to remember is that
Instagram is favored by both millennials who love Instagram’s content-first format, as
well as marketers who are looking to create brand-sponsored content in collaboration
with social media influencers. With Instagram’s popularity, there are people nowadays
who turned their Instagram influence into a career. Working with brands, creating
content with them and/or for them, based on their number of followers, is a pretty
pricey business in the digital world. This leads me to my first tip for you if you want to
successfully conquer Instagram:

2.1. CONTENT IS THE KING

Digital marketers love this phrase. It’s been said so many times before that one
would think everyone will know by now how to implement it into their strategies, but
unfortunately, that’s not the case. A lot of brands realize they should be on Instagram,
so they set up their profile, post a couple of photos, add a dozen hashtags, and then
they give up, if within a month, they don’t have thousands of people following them,
and social media influencers aren’t showering them with affection or waiting in line to
collab with them. That’s not how it works.
With Instagram, you need to think long-term. You need to create amazing, visually

WHAT TO POST? 9.
beautiful and relevant content for your followers. One, ten or even 50 pictures aren’t
enough. When someone first discovers your Instagram profile, they’ll most likely scroll
all the way through it from top to bottom, because they want to evaluate if your kind
of content is something they’d enjoy seeing in their Instagram feed. Invest in creative
ideas, brainstorm with people from creative industries, inspire yourself through other
profiles (but don’t copy!), think outside the box. Instagram offers you so much: pictures,
videos, galleries with a slideshow up to 10 photos, Boomerangs which are basically
videos that act like GIFs, Instagram Stories that disappear after 24 hours…
If you really want to get something out of your Instagram, hire professionals who will
come up with thoughtful strategy, who are familiar with your brand identity and who will
keep in mind that posting stock photos on Instagram will bring you absolutely nothing.

2.2. NO.1 SOCIAL MEDIA ENGAGEMENT TOOL

Instagram is amazing for brand awareness, but also, engagement. How many times in
the last two years have you read somewhere that certain Instagram posts went viral?
“The Internet can’t cope” and “People had a meltdown” are just some of the most-used
lines in titles when websites are reporting about some Instagram post getting a lot of
engagement: likes, comments, reposts…
How does that look like in practice? Here’s a great example from Forrester: Red Bull
posted a video of a unique snowboarding half-pipe on both Facebook and Instagram. A
few days later, they noted that the brand’s 43 million Facebook fans had liked the video
just 2,600 times (a 0.006% likes-per-fan rate), while its 1,2 million Instagram followers
had liked the video more than 36,000 times (a 3% likes-per-follower rate).
The point is: yes, you should definitely and absolutely have a Facebook page if you
are a serious business brand in the 21st century. But, if your brand is lacking social
engagement on Facebook or Twitter, give Instagram a go. Once again, if you want your
followers to engage with your brand, give them quality and relevant content. Don’t just
assume that Instagram users will engage simply because you’re on Instagram, posting
pictures.
So how do people even decide who to follow and who to engage with, you might ask?
Well, that brings us to number 3…

WHAT TO POST? 10.

2.3. THEME IS THE QUEEN
If the content is the king, then the theme of your Instagram is the queen. Or Khaleesi,
whatever you prefer. Either way, it’s immensely important to emphasize one more
time – aesthetics is the key to success on Instagram. Choose your niche and stick to
it. Whether you’re posting food photos, fashion items or promoting a certain lifestyle,
make sure all your photos have the same “vibe.” Don’t think that showcasing the
same editing style will limit you either; just make sure all your photos have the same
brightness, saturation, and filters in common. For example, if you choose to go with
bright and bold colors, forget about mixing in black & white pictures.

Here’s another great example: Katie Gong is an interior designer and artist who uses
her Instagram to promote her woodworking business. As you can see, her feed is
beautifully composed with simplicity and warm and brown shades with white tones
popping out every now and then. All of it together works marvellously, so it’s no surprise
Katie managed to get over 18k followers on Instagram.
If you don’t really have a niche, but you still want your Instagram feed to look alluring,

WHAT TO POST? 11.

then use one filter on all of your photos. Forget about brightness, saturation, contrast
and other settings. Choose one filter you like the most and then add it to every picture
you post. You can play with the amount of filter you want on your pictures. Somewhere
you might want to add full 100%, yet on other photos you’ll add just 20% of the filter.
That way, your feed will seem more cohesive and put together.

WHAT TO POST? 12.

2.4. MISTER MONOTONY
Do you know the song: Sometimes he would change the key, but the same dull melody
would emerge from Mister Monotony? Anyway, that’s one more thing you need to think
about when planning your feed and posting pictures. Make sure it’s not monotonous.
That’s one of the trickiest cases for you to solve: figuring out how to make an individual
photo look great next to all of your other previously posted photos. Here’s a little tip
that helped me a lot: a preview of your feed using other apps. For example, for my
personal Instagram, I use VSCO app for picture editing which also allows me to see how
this one particular picture blends in with others I’ve previously uploaded and published.
VSCO isn’t the only app that allows you that. The Later app is another great example
you can use which, aside from previewing your feed, is also quite handy for scheduling
your pictures on Instagram.

WHAT TO POST? 13.

Unless you are completely dedicated to one niche, make sure you’re not posting
two pictures of the same thing next to each other. For example, let’s say you are a
small business owner who produces organic food and wants to achieve better brand
awareness through Instagram. Posting pictures of organic food on your feed is great,
but be aware it’s not a good practice to publish two pictures showcasing red apples
next to each other. Instead, space out these two pictures by either one or three photos,
never two. Why, you might ask? Well, that way you’re preventing having two apple
photos on top of each other in a column.

2.5. STAY UP TO DATE

Instagram always makes sure that they are improving the experience for their users.
A lot has changed since the first-time Instagram was launched. In the beginning, you
could only post photos that were square sized because they were inspired by Polaroid
pictures. Then, with time, we, the users, were given the opportunity to post different
dimensions of photos, both vertical and horizontal. Next thing you know, videos came
and we were finally able to share short videos with our followers.
Then Snapchat happened and millennials started to embrace it. So Instagram copied
their feature of posts that disappear after 24 hours. That’s how Instagram Stories were
born. Last big thing we got were galleries of photos where you’re allowed to publish
up to 10 photos and/or videos that look like a slideshow on your feed.

Basically, there’s a lot to take in, keep an eye out, so it’s really important to stay informed.
Treat your Instagram feed like an extension of your brand. That way you’ll care about
what’s going on there, what your followers are saying if they are engaging or there is
something you could work on to improve. Remember: Instagram is supposed to be fun
– both for you and your followers.

3
COMMON MISTAKES AND
HOW TO AVOID THEM
3. COMMON MISTAKES AND
HOW TO AVOID THEM

You have to make sure to optimize your profile as much as possible to gain followers,
keep them and delight them with excellent content. This chapter will cover top 10
mistakes made by brands on Instagram and why you should learn from them in order
to have a successful Instagram profile. So let’s dig in!

3.1. BAD PROFILE OPTIMIZATION

The first mistake brands make on Instagram is bad optimization of the profile. Pay
attention to following:

Profile picture
Description and link in bio
Settings of the profile

I’ve already mentioned all of this at the beginning, but let’s highlight it once more. If you
don’t have a profile picture, followers are less likely to follow you for one simple reason
– they can’t visualize what your brand offers. As a profile picture, brands usually use
their logotypes, and we approve of this practice. Use your logotype as a profile picture
and make sure it looks good and centered.
Another mistake is a bad description of your brand, or worse, not having a description
at all. Description in your bio has to be interesting and inviting. Don’t just describe your
products or services and make them boring as hell. Instead, tell users your mission,
your vision or even philosophy of your brand. Tell them why you’re doing what you’re
doing and how you’re doing it. Don’t write an entire story, choose your words carefully
and make it readable. Also, don’t forget a link to your website in the bio description.
This is a crucial thing if you want to drive traffic to your website through Instagram. You
can put a link to your website or just a particular product or service that you’re talking
about that week. This will be explained further on.
Next, setting your profile on private is the worst mistake you can make. If you put your
profile on private, users won’t be able to see your profile instantly. This is a deal-breaker,

COMMON MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM 16.

so be smart enough not to do it. With a private profile, you’re stopping users from
seeing your content until you approve their request to follow you. Imagine yourself in
this situation. Would you buy some apples if you’re not able to enter the fruit store?
Would you wait for someone to open the store? That’s the point of letting your users
see what you do the very second they find their way to your profile. Put your profile on
public and let users explore it. This will make them follow you based on your content
and that’s the kind of followers you want.

3.2. BAD PICTURE OPTIMIZATION

This one is one of the most common mistakes made by brands on Instagram. People,
you have to learn what Instagram is to be successful on it! It’s all about the visuals, and
you know what they say – a good picture is worth a thousand words. Take your time
and learn how to use it. But, as we’re trying to tell you about some of the worst mistakes
made by brands on Instagram, we would like to highlight the ones that make us cringe:

Low-resolution pictures
Discolored pictures

For the love of God, please check out the best sizes of pictures on Instagram even
before you create a profile. There is nothing worse than seeing a picture that has
low resolution and doesn’t fit Instagram sizes. Even though you can post vertical and
horizontal pictures now, Instagram still loves the square shaped pictures. The higher
resolution of your pictures is, the more credible and professional you look. It doesn’t
matter if you have a small brand or a big one, pay attention to your pictures. Also,
Instagram provides all sorts of filters, but be careful. Don’t use filters that’ll mess up the
colors because it just doesn’t look good.
If you want to be on top of the game, you can use other photo-editing apps to make
your pictures look impressive and to get that ‘wow’ effect. We highly recommend VSCO,
Snapseed, and Hyperlapse, because you’ll be able to make your pictures and videos
pop.

COMMON MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM 17.

3.3. BAD COPYWRITING
This part is important for you to understand if you want to be successful on Instagram.
You’re probably wondering why we emphasized this part when it seems so simple. But,
there are a lot of brands that think that content has to be super long. Wrong! Would
you like to scroll through pages and pages of some text? So, keep in mind the ‘Rule of
thumb’. This means you need to stay away from long texts and optimize them in a way
that followers don’t have to use their thumbs to scroll down to read everything you wrote
about. This rule depends on the industry of your brand. So, if you’re a beginner, explore
other similar and more experienced brands on Instagram and take their example.

3.4. LACK OF CREATIVITY

We know that some days you just don’t have time to make awesome content. Sometimes
you have to settle for less perfect content to stay within your plan. But there’s a mistake
that brands often make on Instagram – reposting an old content, or even worse, making
your posts look all the same. Think of this from followers’ point of view, and you’ll realize
that this is unacceptable for a good and inviting profile. So, sit down and brainstorm
what kind of content you can post in a long-term period. Don’t think it’s a waste of
time, it’ll be worth your while when you see how followers react to it. Creativity is highly
appreciated by followers, and they’ll be more likely to engage with creative, awesome
content than some boring one.

3.5. KILLING THE FUN

This goes for all the brands out there that are killing Instagram with their ‘buy me,
buy me!’ content and making it annoying as hell. If you sell products and want to have
successful traffic on Instagram, don’t make it all about selling stuff. People want to
bond with your brand. Lifestyle content is the best way to bond with followers. Show
them what your office looks like, who works there, what values you have, what your
philosophy is or what you like to do. Some selfie every now and then is desirable, but
don’t make it all about the selfies. Again, think as a follower, not as a brand!

COMMON MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM 18.

3.6. CONTENT WITH NO VALUE
Every now and then, you stumble upon some funny pictures, videos or something you
really like. You feel the urge to share it with your followers and make them laugh just
like it made you laugh. But, remember, this is also a mistake. This type of content is
tricky as you don’t want to connect your profile with content that has no real
value to followers. For example, you sell shoes and make content related to your
products, you make lifestyle content which is also connected to the brand, take care
of followers, and then you post a video of some funny dog out-of-the-blue. Do you see
what’s wrong here? We understand your intention, and it’s fine by us, but don’t post it
on your brand’s profile. Post it on your personal profile instead. This is also a thing that
depends on the industry you’re in, so think about it in a context of the industry.

3.7. THE RIGHT TIME TO POST

When you don’t have a clear plan of posting on Instagram, you’re doomed. Just imagine
this from followers’ point of view. How can you expect followers to trust you and have
a positive image of your brand if you post content every now and then? If you plan on
posting whenever you feel like it, forget about it. This won’t work on Instagram or any
other social network. Make a plan of days you’ll be posting your content on and stick
to it. That way, followers will know that you’re credible, trustworthy and more likely to
keep following you.
We can’t tell you what the exact and best time of posting is, but the best advice we can
give you is to pay attention to reactions of your followers and look at Insights with weekly
analytics. The good news is that you can optimize your posting time to get the most
likes and good reach by looking at information Instagram has already provided
you with. Play with posting times at first, and after some while and fair numbers of
followers, you should be able to see when to post according to the most likes you get
at a given time. The story doesn’t end here, you have to track this constantly and adjust
as your page is growing.

COMMON MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM 19.

3.8. HASHTAG IT, BABY!
We’re well aware that brands often misuse hashtags and don’t understand their value.
Hashtags are there for a reason. It’s not just to look good or to make up some words that
come to your mind. Hashtags represent symbols or codes that make web search engines
understand and categorize pictures on Instagram. That way, when users search for a
term that you posted in copy, your content is shown to them. Be careful with hashtags
and don’t go wild with them by making up words without any meaning. Choose them
carefully, and make sure they fit your content. If you decide to make your own hashtag
with the name of your brand, stick to it and post it in every piece of content.

COMMON MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM 20.

3.9. FEAR FROM FOLLOWERS
Followers are your friends, not enemies. Remember this, and don’t be afraid to engage
with them. Brands usually post content on Instagram regularly, pay attention to all
the possible details and just forget to engage with their followers. Look, having an
Instagram profile is not just about posting high-quality content and good copywriting,
it’s also about interacting. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to interact with your
followers. This doesn’t mean you have to be on Instagram 24/7, but you should check
your profile several times a day. Doing this, you’ll be able to see comments, mentions,
and likes on time and react to them in real-time. Followers like to be appreciated and
have a feeling of connection with brands. You want to make your followers like you
and interact with you in order to delight them. Also, engage with your followers by
commenting and liking their content. This way, you’re bonding with them on a higher
level and you seem an approachable and down-to-earth type of brand which is a nice
addition to your positive image.
Another thing to keep in mind is the number of people that follow you and the number
of people you follow. For example, if you follow 1000 people, and 200 of them are
following you – it looks sad. We’re not saying that you should stop following people,
but take care of who you follow. If you follow every person that liked your picture, no
matter his or her real interests, the result will be just the same.

3.10. TRAFFIC
As we have mentioned in the first part of this list, you can put a link to your bio
description. Brands often forget about it completely, which is a huge mistake. In this
situation, followers have to ‘google’ you and that’s just the thing they don’t want to do.
Trust us, people are lazy. If you have an opportunity to post a link to your web page, the
logical thing is to use it. The link in the bio should always be on your mind and you
can play with it. If you have some kind of a blog, and you’re posting regularly, make a
picture or a video of it, put a link in your bio and tell your followers that they can find
a link to a blog in the bio. That way you’ll intrigue them and make them want to read it
which is just the thing you want them to do.
This goes for products also. If you have some product in your web shop that you want
to present to your followers in a way that they go to your web shop and check out other

products as well, make content and direct them to the link in the bio. There are many
possibilities to play with, and we highly recommend to use them. Sometimes it’s not the
best solution to drive followers to your web page if you haven’t had the time to optimize
it.
All in all, we recommend having a link to your web page in the bio no matter what it
looks like, because, you know, it’s easier for followers to explore your brand. In this
case, stay away from posting the mentioned content and highlight your web page until
you actually optimize it.

HOW TO PROPERLY USE
#HASHTAGS ON
INSTAGRAM?
4. HOW TO PROPERLY USE
#HASHTAGS ON INSTAGRAM?

As I’ve previously mentioned, hashtags are an essential and powerful tool of Instagram.
It derives from another social network, Twitter, and Instagram introduced them a little
bit later. Now it is hard to find pictures without their description or comment containing
at least few hashtags. Why are hashtags important? Well, because that’s one of the
ways people can be brought to our content. To make sure that those people are your
target audience, you need to use hashtags wisely and carefully. We will try to give you
some basic tips on how you can rule the Instagram and bring the right people to your
Instagram profile using suitable hashtags.

4.1. FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

First of all, before we even start talking about hashtags, you have to be careful to set
up your profile public. If it is private, the whole concept with hashtags doesn’t have
any sense because your content wouldn’t show up in any search result. Now that we
cleared that up, you need to know what is possible and what’s not to write in the form
of hashtags. For example, you can write numbers, but signs such as signs for money ($
or €), they won’t pop up in the search result. You can write up to 30 hashtags, which,
of course, doesn’t mean you have to. However, there are also some banned hashtags,
which you need to be careful not to use. Most of them are understandable because
they contain inappropriate words, but be cautious with those which are not so logical,
for example, #popular or #like. The best way is that you try to search for some hashtags
you want to use. If you can’t find anything, it means the hashtag is banned or non-
existing. Also, it’s great because, if you stumble upon many dull pictures, it’s better you
skip that hashtag.

HOW TO PROPERLY USE #HASHTAGS ON INSTAGRAM? 24.

4.2. THE MORE SPECIFIC – THE BETTER!
If you are a company that, let’s say, sells furniture, you will not use the hashtag like #food.
That’s pretty obvious. Still, there are some people who are writing absolutely everything
that comes to their mind just to pop out in every search result. That’s definitely the
wrong approach because you want to attract people who are searching for something
that you can actually provide them with. Of course, if you are selling furniture, you can
provide people with beds, wardrobes, mirrors, etc. However, just because you can offer
them that, it still doesn’t mean you need to put it all in your hashtags. Why? Because
you need to attract people who are searching for something at the very moment. That
means they are likely to buy something because they need it right now. If on the picture
you have a sofa and under it, you write all the products that you have, people who are
searching for beds and see the sofa instead won’t be pleased. We understand that you
want them to know you have all of that, but it won’t get you anywhere because they
won’t proceed to the next step. Instead, you should try to be specific as much as you
can. You need to put yourself in the shoes of the buyer. What kind of sofa do you want?
By adding some adjectives, you can narrow down the search and get the target audience
which will most certainly be interested in your product. For example, the sofa is yellow,
so you add #yellowsofa. There are not many people searching for it, but whoever is,
they will stumble upon your photo and will be the right audience. So, hashtags need to
be meaningful and a good representation of what’s actually in the picture.

4.3. PERSONALIZED HASHTAGS

Many companies write their name as a hashtag, which is fine if your company has a
short and catchy name. If not, it is better to shorten it somehow or to use your company’s
motto or saying. Here at Kontra, we like to combine it, so we are using #kontraagency
and #turningthingsaround. You need to be consistent for it to spread and become
recognizable. Also, as you can follow people and brands on Instagram, you can also
follow hashtags which makes it easier for your target audience to stay up to date with
everything you post with that particular hashtag!

HOW TO PROPERLY USE #HASHTAGS ON INSTAGRAM? 25.

4.4. CHECK YOUR OPTIONS
You can investigate a little bit before deciding which hashtags you want to use. One of
the ways to examine can be by searching different hashtags yourself. For example, if
you’re going to put #business when describing your picture, you can first search this
hashtag and observe what people wrote besides that. It can be #success, maybe #work
and so on. That way you can understand your target audiences’ interests better. You
don’t need to concentrate only on the customers; you can expand your search on your
competition as well. See if they are already using the same hashtags you want to use.
If they are more successful, it can happen that you will end up being in their shadow.
That’s why you need to come up with other variations of the same thing.

4.5. SMART, NOT POPULAR

If you search the web for hashtags, I’m sure you’re going to stumble upon different sites
which give you all hashtag ideas sorted even by topic. These sites have the possibility
of copying these hashtags so that you don’t have to think much. Don’t do that! These
hashtags are typical, broad and won’t get you anywhere. If you’re just copy-pasting
popular hashtags maybe you will get many likes on this particular post, but it won’t be
from the right people, and it won’t get you followers for good. It’s better that you try
to think of something innovative, catchy, something that can define your brand, not
something irrelevant.

4.6. COMBINE AND TEST

You can try with different hashtags, test them and see which ones give you the
best results. Also, you can put hashtags both in your caption or in the first comment.
Basically, these two ways have the same function, but sometimes it looks crowded
with many hashtags in the caption, so it is better to put it in the comment. You can
experiment even with this by using just a few crucial hashtags that want to be visible in
the caption and then add the rest of it in the first comment. You always have to follow
the trends in your industry so that you can use them in your hashtags.
All in all, these are some basic stuff you need to follow if you want your Instagram
profile to be professional. However, everything else is up to you. So, combine, test and,
of course, have fun!

INSTAGRAM STORIES:
HOW TO USE THEM
AND WHY?
5. INSTAGRAM STORIES:
HOW TO USE THEM AND WHY?

Once upon a time, there was Snapchat with its disappearing content and witty filters
for selfies, but then summer of 2016 came along and Instagram introduces Stories as
its answer to Snapchat. The rest is history – Instagram Stories are now more popular
than Snapchat. I mean, sure – when Instagram first introduced Stories, everyone talked
about how they just copied Snapchat. Also, there was a lot of complaining how this will
ruin Instagram experience for people. Neither of these turned out to be true.
First of all, Instagram didn’t copy Snapchat – they improved their idea and made it their
own. Basically, they created a better version that was easier to use for both regular folks
and businesses. You didn’t need to tackle down two different apps; instead you could
plan your content in the same app. So both for regular Instagram feed and for Stories.
Obviously, a lot of marketers were confused at first how to use Instagram to their
advantage for their business. Here’s the thing: Instagram was never meant for you.
Sorry, not sorry. Before Stories, before advertising on Instagram, before all of that –
there was just a simple idea of Instagram existing as a simple and fun app for sharing
people’s favorite moments with their friends in the form of a polaroid-shaped picture.
Its popularity grew and businesses have taken notice. Suddenly, they appeared there as
well. And people didn’t mind since they were already used to communicating with them
on Facebook. Also, Instagram allowed businesses to communicate with their target
audience differently than Facebook.
Years have passed and a lot has changed. If you don’t pay attention, you won’t be
able to stay on track with Instagram’s ever-changing game rules. There’s the ongoing
conversation on shadowban (for those who don’t know, shadowban hides your Instagram
posts from users who don’t follow you, which means, if you get shadowbanned on
Instagram and use hashtags in your posts, only you and your current followers will
see them when they search for the hashtags you used. It kills your engagement and
prevents you from getting new followers!), Instagram algorithm, and importance of
Instagram Stories or Insta Stories for short.

INSTAGRAM STORIES: HOW TO USE THEM AND WHY? 28.

5.1. WHY SHOULD BUSINESSES USE INSTA STORIES
Not enough of businesses use Insta Stories. The first reason is that they don’t understand
them. A lot of businesses have a couple of board members who understand that any
normal and modern company in the 21st century needs to have a social media strategy,
but they all want to see the numbers, KPIs, purchases that their social media posts
brought them etc. So, how to explain to them that a chunk of their social media budget
needs to be invested in Insta Stories – disappearing content which is hard to measure
in anything other than a number of people who saw that content?
Another thing is that a lot of businesses still don’t have in-house digital departments
or marketing experts who understand social media and they usually outsource that
part to some agency. But if you’re working in a digital agency, you know you can’t really
post anything on your own and you need to check everything with your client to make

INSTAGRAM STORIES: HOW TO USE THEM AND WHY? 29.

sure they are okay with content, message you’re trying to communicate etc. Insta
Stories should be – instant. Something you shot right now, at the moment, this very
second. Obviously, you can’t just post it before sending it to client and then they need
to approve it which can take time if they haven’t seen an e-mail or if they want to make
some changes. You get what I’m trying to say.
The point is – this doesn’t work. You need to explain to them that they will just have to
believe you that you’ll do everything in your power to create the best content for them
and in their best interest. Trends on Instagram change daily. That’s why you won’t be
able to stick to your monthly plan all the time.
Insta Stories are just as important as is your content published on normal feed. In fact,
my gut tells me, Insta Stories will be the biggest trend of this year with more and more
people (and businesses!) using them. They give authentic and direct connection with
your followers and helps them to get to know you and your business a lot better. While
your artsy photos, that you carefully edited and formulated for your feed, will bring
you new followers and showcase your products, services or whatever you’re posting,
Stories will give your already existing followers more accurate view of what’s going on
behind the scenes. Even more so because regular Instagram posts are a subject to the
sometimes fickle Instagram algorithm, but Instagram won’t penalize you for posting too
many Instagram Stories.
Need ideas what to post on Stories? How about tips and tricks about how to use your
product? Or inspiring ideas how your product helped others? Or sneak peak of new
product you’re launching to hype them for it? Show them how to use your product or
how practical it is, what benefits they’ll have if they use it… Possibilities are endless.
Long story short, Instagram Stories are a great way to build your brand, build stronger
relationship with your audience, give them valuable content, engage with them and
grow wider awareness.
Stories are featured at the top of Instagram and are one of the best ways to increase
engagement and visibility among your followers. Most importantly, Instagram Stories
are pretty relaxed place than regular photos and videos posted on feed, and the quality
standards are much lower than they are for regular posts. It means you don’t have to
be afraid of posting something goofy: a fun Boomerang of your team out for post-work
drinks, for example!

INSTAGRAM STORIES: HOW TO USE THEM AND WHY? 30.

5.2. HOW TO USE INSTA STORIES
Let’s be honest here, the world is your oyster since Instagram created so many cool
tools for Stories which you can use: live videos, Rewing, Boomerang, 15-second videos,
Zoom option, Polls, filters, hashtags, stickers, location, tagging... But if all of that isn’t
enough for you, there are other apps you can use to make your Insta Stories really
stick out. For example, download Canva to upload your photos into their amazing eye-
catching designs and templates!
Want to add animated text to your content? Don’t worry, Legend app has got you
covered. For iOS, I suggest Hype Type. If you want to make music, add text and more to
your Insta Stories, then play around in InShot app (available for both Android and iOS!).
If you want your Instagram Stories to contain more than just a single vertical image or
video, use PicPlayPost (again, available on both iOS and Android). It’s a perfect app for
creating photo and video collages that are ready to share. Want to add some sparkle
to your Insta Stories? Consider downloading kirakira+ (only on iOS). Want to plan your
Insta Stories ahead? Preview app makes it easier for you! See how many options?! All
you need to do is be creative and stay on track with all Instagram trends (because there
are so many). Easy peasy, right? Don’t get scared, once you get into it, you’ll see how
incredible it can be.

Best Practices
I’m not going to mention Instagram Ads (which are available in Stories, as well as in
normal feed). Even though they allow you to link them directly to your website, blog
or web shop, I want you to completely focus on creating best possible Insta Stories
completely organically.
So my first tip for you is to tell a story. It might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised
how many brands don’t follow this advice or worse – don’t know how to use Insta Stories
to tell their story. Stories are great for storytelling (see what I did there?). Your Instagram
strategy shouldn’t be just a bunch of randomly picked visuals. All these elements need
to play well together to tell a complete story of your business. All these Individual pieces
of content need to be pieces of a larger puzzle. Even though Insta Stories are pieces of
a puzzle that will disappear, they can still make an impact.
That’s why it’s so important to be authentic. Be fun, informative and engaging. Keep
your perfectly polished content for your feed posts. In Stories, be as creative and

INSTAGRAM STORIES: HOW TO USE THEM AND WHY? 31.

whimsical as you can, but don’t forget to provide value. Your content, on feed or Stories,
will be worthless if you don’t make sure that your content will keep viewers coming
back for more.
Instagram Stories are designed for content that looks as though it was just captured
(even if it wasn’t). You can and should plan ahead, but don’t expect you’ll be able to stick
to it every single time. Some new trends may occur in the meantime and you’ll have to
adapt. And the ability to adapt is crucial for creating amazing content for Insta Stories.

Still reading? Good for you. So, remember when I earlier suggested you some ideas for
content you can share on Insta Stories? Well, here are some examples along with an
account how to do it right.

1. How-To tutorial
Great idea for a series of Insta Stories. Show people how to use your product
and what they can do with it. Esty does that marvelously: for their craft-
loving follower base, they create engaging Insta Stories with step-by-step
instructions on creative projects.

2. Behind The Scenes

You have a web shop and are preparing to launch a new collection of
products? Great! While there are months till official launch, show your
followers behind the scenes by posting a couple of videos from photoshoot
to give them a glimpse of what they can expect to see in this upcoming
collection. That way you’ll hype them and make them want to pre-order it. Oui
Fresh does amazing behind the scene Insta Stories!

3. Everyone loves lists

Top 10 best selling products on your website? Top 10 most-read posts on your
blog? List of most booked apartments in your hotel? List of best books you’ve
read this month? All great ideas to share in a couple of Insta Stories to your
followers! It’s informative and fun, but also, can be inspiring and engaging. Just
what you want and need. Checkout how Bookworm Boutique does it.

INSTAGRAM STORIES: HOW TO USE THEM AND WHY? 32.

4. Q&A or polls
Time to start the conversation! Insta Stories allow you to get feedback from
your followers so why not ask them anything and everything that interests
you. For example, Taco Bell regularly asks their audience what sort of content
they’d like to see in the brands Instagram. You can do a poll and choose
between two options or you can, for example, ask your followers what is their
favorite product by your business and to post it on their Insta Stories while
tagging you. That way, you’ll get feedback, but also a visible one since they’ll
share with their followers your products, tag you and possibly bring you new
followers.

3 REASONS WHY YOU DON’T
NEED INSTAGRAM IN YOUR
MARKETING STRATEGY
6. 3 REASONS WHY YOU DON’T
NEED INSTAGRAM IN YOUR
MARKETING STRATEGY

A few weeks back, we had a potential client who asked us about ideas for digital
marketing strategy. Till that point, they didn’t have a website (I know, I was shocked as
well), Facebook page or any other social network, yet they asked us to give them tips and
guidance for opening Instagram profile for their business. Just Instagram profile and
nothing else. They are an IT company that offers software services. Considering that,
we suggested them to open a website and Facebook page instead, but they didn’t want
that. They said they want just Instagram because they personally use just Instagram
and think Facebook is boring, so it made sense to them to use only Instagram for their
marketing strategy.
To be completely honest, I wouldn’t suggest anyone to focus just on Instagram with
their marketing strategy, regardless of their business objective. But especially in this
case, where we’re talking about the B2B type of IT business – Instagram is not enough
and will not be sufficient. Focusing on just one social network might have been useful
back in 2009, but today – you need to go further. You need to push boundaries. With
that in mind, here are my 3 reasons why you don’t NEED to be on Instagram just because
everyone else is or just because you prefer using it.

6.1. CAREFULLY CHOOSE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA

Let’s start with this. You need to carefully choose your social media channels and see
what would work best for you because, obviously, not everything will. For example, not
every successful brand is on Twitter. Rather, they focus on Facebook and Instagram
marketing strategy. Also, not every company has Instagram, but they have both
Facebook and Twitter and are killing it over there. Sure, some have Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, blog, YouTube channel and a Google+ page, but that
doesn’t mean this marketing model will work for everyone. Some things are better for
promotion on Facebook; some for Instagram. Some just don’t work at all on Instagram,
so don’t force it. Instead, why don’t you focus on your Facebook page, but use Instagram
for ads? Because that’s available, you know? You can actually advertise your business

3 REASONS WHY YOU DON’T NEED INSTAGRAM IN YOUR MARKETING STRATEGY 35.
on Instagram without actually having an Instagram account. Don’t base your opinion
of what’s best for your business on your personal experience: explore, investigate, dig
deeper. Look for other similar businesses and see what they are doing. Don’t copy
them, but learn from them.

6.2. DON’T OVERSELL

Many marketers do this common mistake of using Instagram to improve their sales.
That’s not how it works. Using Instagram for business is about building a brand, creating
conversation, reaching out towards your customers, engaging with them and inspiring
them with your products and services. Don’t create an Instagram page if your intentions
aren’t listed here. If your plan is to create your brand’s Instagram to push products to
people, you are going to fail. That is not a good marketing strategy and you’re not going
to get a lot from time invested in posting content like that. If you want to see the results,
then you need to use Instagram as a tool for creating brand awareness through quality
and relatable content that your target audience will love.

6.3. HAVE PATIENCE

Change doesn’t come over night. I’ve already talked about this before, but just because
someone follows you on Instagram, that doesn’t mean they’ll buy your products and/or
want your services. I follow a bunch of brands on Instagram and will probably never buy
anything from them because I can’t really afford luxury goods. For example, many people
follow Mercedes on Instagram, but will they ever buy one for themselves? Probably not.
Still, they love seeing this kind of content because it inspires them, let’s them daydream
about their cars and creates a bond with the brand. If one day something happens and
you’ll have a crisis marketing situation, brand loyalty you’ve created through your social
media channels will mean a lot.
So if you expect your numbers to go up in a month, two or even a year, just because
you’ve started your brand’s Instagram account, I must disappoint you – that’s not going
to happen. Take your time. Post quality photos. Focus on engagement, not on a total
number of followers. You want people who love talking to you and your company,
not just on a highest number. Work on improving number of likes on your photos,
comments below the content you post, not of reaching a certain number of followers.

3 REASONS WHY YOU DON’T NEED INSTAGRAM IN YOUR MARKETING STRATEGY 36.
Note that it’s hard to keep your engagement level the same over a long period of time
and it’s perfectly normal for numbers to drop from time to time.
Also, don’t be spammy. No need to post 10 pictures a day. Instead, one or two really
good ones might have more influence than these ten. Quality over quantity – always. Be
genuine and authentic, but also, be consistent. Don’t go too long between posting two
photos. A few days is okay – a few weeks is not.
Basically, Instagram isn’t simple as it might seem. Just because you prefer using it for
personal needs (liking lunch photos your friends posted, cat pictures and vacation
updates from your ex), that doesn’t mean it’s the same to use Instagram for business. If
you’re not going to use it properly, don’t even bother creating an account.

SHADOWBAN AND
BANNED HASHTAGS
7. SHADOWBAN AND BANNED HASHTAGS

Many people never heard of this term, but once you explain it to them, a lot of them will
have the exact same reaction: “OMG, no wonder I have so little engagement lately on my
Instagram!” Yes, shadowban is real and it is definitely happening to a lot of Instagram
profiles lately due to the fact most Instagram users don’t know what it is and therefore
how to prevent it.
The basic definition of Instagram shadowban would be the act of blocking a certain user
or their content from the rest of Instagram community and preventing them from seeing
any content user posted. Many Instagram influencers were frustrated with Instagram’s
algorithm because they thought it was the main reason of not having enough of their
followers like, comment or generally engage with their photos and videos, but the truth
is - a lot of them were shadowbanned without even knowing it. The absence of reactions
to their content can even make some people so bored or frustrated with Instagram that
they just give up and leave the app altogether.
Don’t do that though – shadowban isn’t permanent and if you happen to assume your
profile might be shadowbanned, there are a couple of things you can to get back on
track.

The first thing you need to know is that Instagram shadowban hides your Instagram
posts from users who don’t follow you, which means only you and your current
followers will see your post when they search for the hashtags you used. If someone
who doesn’t follow your account searches for one of those hashtags, they won’t be
able to see your post! Obviously, that can be demotivational if you’re trying to grow
Instagram community of followers who love your content and engage with you, but at
least those who follow you will be able to enjoy it and that’s something. But if you want
to use Instagram for business, it can mean fewer customers and revenue because your
follower growth and engagement rate could stagnate or even decline.

Shadowban exists to deter users from being spammy, inappropriate, or even abusive. It
makes sense in the context of some people using bots, auto-posting software, and other
third-party apps Instagram has explicitly banned, but the problem is that Instagram also
bans certain hashtags that don’t seem inappropriate when you think of it. For example,

SHADOWBAN AND BANNED HASHTAGS 39.

I bet you didn’t know hashtag #beyonce is banned? Not completely, though, but still
– you are risking a shadowban by using it. Wondering how I know that? Check out the
picture below:

Whenever you click on a hashtag and find this warning below Top Posts, know that
something is not right and Instagram doesn’t approve this kind of content. Why? Well,
for various reasons. For example, there were a lot of reported pictures published under
this particular hashtag or Instagram noticed users posting content with this hashtag
that doesn’t correlate in any way with it.

Another issue is that Instagram is penalizing accounts for using the same hashtags over
and over. For example, if you are a food blogger and you decide to use a hashtag #food
under every single of your posts, you could get shadowbanned. This way, Instagram

SHADOWBAN AND BANNED HASHTAGS 40.

basically forces business accounts to invest in advertising if they want to reach their
audience. Hashtags are designed to get your content found by users who don’t follow
you so if Instagram wanted to increase paid revenue on ads, how could they do it
most efficiently? By tinkering with an account’s ability to reach a wider audience using
hashtags.

Their idea is simple: you want to reach your target audience? Good – then pay us!
So is there anything you can do about it? Well, for starters: don’t use any external tools
to test if you have been shadow banned. That will get you into more trouble! Then, lay
low and don’t post for a couple of days to cool down the ban on your profile. Consider
it a reset button.
Delete all hashtags from recent posts and before you post a new content after laying
low, find new hashtags you’ll use in your next posts. Make sure they aren’t banned
as well. Just go into Search bar on Instagram and type that hashtag in there. If you
don’t see the texts as pictured above for hashtag #beyonce, then you’re good to go.
Otherwise, stay away from that hashtag.

GODSPEED AND MAY INSTAGRAM BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!

CONCLUSION
8. CONCLUSION

Instagram is an amazing tool to use for your business, but it takes time and a lot of
effort to see the results. Don’t expect to show up there one day and in a week, you’ll
be making so much money your competitors will be bankrupt. It doesn’t work like that.
Stay on top of things and read the latest news about Instagram to keep up with all
the latest updates, improvements, features and trends. Always check for new ways to
present your content to your target audience and don’t be shy when it comes to trying
out different things. Maybe others aren’t doing it, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work
for you and your brand.
The Internet is a big place and there’s room for everyone, especially on Instagram which
takes up just a small amount of world wide web. But if you do it right, that little corner
of the Internet could be the best thing that ever happened to your business.

HAPPY INSTAGRAMMING!
