EOP Biographical Questions

Answers to the following questions will help us determine your motivation and
preparation to undertake college work. Please answer as precisely and honestly as
possible. Use complete sentences and avoid responses such as "yes" or "no"

1. Briefly describe your family's economic background.include information

about your financial challenges
My grandmother crossed the border in order for her family to have a better life for her
daughters, because of this my family has always been of low-income status. Later on, my
mother became pregnant without finishing her high school career so all financial income went to
my mother. This caused my family to live in a cramped apartment with four other people, when I
turned five my family moved out to another apartment for themselves this time my mother was
working a low-income job and my grandmother was working as a maid. My grandmother left
every month and came back for one week each month to meet the rent's deadline, which helped
the financial status of the family. On September 3rd, 2005 my younger brother was born, this
caused my mother to hire a babysitter for me and my brother so we wouldn’t stay alone. A
couple of years later at the end of my middle years my mother’s health started to diminish, her
health condition sent her to the hospital multiple times which caused financial problems, lucky
her condition started to get better after four years, but this has caused her work to become
tougher on her.

2. Why would you like to attend college? Discuss your career and personal
goals. Are there any particular circumstances, school experiences, or
persons that influenced your preparation or motivation to attend college
(e.g., cultural/financial background, family, teachers, schools you
attended)? Please explain. (Max 2500 words)

I would like to attend college to further expand my knowledge of subjects that interest me and
will be useful to me in the upcoming years of my life. Getting hired at a stable job that provides a
decent income also plays a role for me to go to college as my family is of low income. I would
also like to attend college to become an example of a role model to my younger brother so he
knows what to do in his future. My career goals are to become a nurse and later on become a
doctor. Part of the reason I want to become a doctor is the fact that I have seen my mother’s
and grandmother’s health diminish as I grew throughout the years. I want to protect people
through scientific means so they can live a happy life without having health problems plaguing
their life. My personal goals are to become a role model for my younger brother so he can find
an example to follow. I also want to make my family proud of my academic achievements. I
want to be able to live a better life than my grandmother so my future children don’t suffer as
she did. One of the people who motivated me to attend college is my mother, she encouraged
me to go so I can live a comfortable life without worrying about financial issues.

3. Briefly discuss your academic background. Did you utilize any additional
support at your high school, such as tutoring? Do your grades in high
school and/or college reflect your academic ability or potential? (Max 2500
words)
My academic background is not the best that it could be, as I wasn’t taking school as seriously
as I could have. My classes weren’t the hardest but during 11th grade, I decided to take a shot
at AP history. I believe that I did not use the additional support provided to me at school to its
maximum potential as I wouldn’t ask for help because of my shyness. I believe that my grades
in high school do not reflect my abilities as a student nor do they represent my potential. I
believe this because I did not try hard enough to become an excellent student, I did not try hard
enough to challenge myself and I did not take my classes as seriously as I should have.

4. List any volunteer, extracurricular activities, or work experience in which

you are or have been involved in the past two years. (Max 2500 words)
Currently I joined the environmental club. The environmental club is about helping the
environment by recycling plastic or glass water bottles. On Friday or Tuesday, we gather all of
the recyclable material and sell it for the school. The school keeps the money so it helps the
campus. I joined the rotary club for volunteering, I had to help sell trees help customers, and
keep the area clean. This helped the school campus as well because for each tree sold the
school campus would receive half of that profit. I joined heal the bay’s event to help clean the
coast of Santa Monica beach. Lastly, I joined the love+share 5 k marathon race to support the
fight for child obesity.
5. Is there any additional information you would like EOP to consider in
determining your admission to the program?

Entering this program would help me immensely as I am the first person in my family to attend
college. This program would help my future goal of becoming a doctor. Partaking in this
program would help me out financially as I come from a low-income family.
