SET THE DEFENSE: CALL PROCEDURE
For us to be successful on defense, we must understand how we call
our defense. To assist in the learning process, all calls for the
defenses, stunts, and coverage should be as descriptive as possible and
called with hand signals from the sideline.
• The stunt and blitz will be call first followed by the coverage.
• Ex. Whip Dog Gray
E N E
1 1
2 3 2
• The linebackers can have numbers instead of names for easy play calling.
• 1 Backers are the Dogs
• 2 Backers are the Bats
• 3 Backer is the Mike
• Ex. Whip 1 Gray
• Whip – Defensive line will slant weak
• 1-The strong 1 will be on
• Gray-The coverage will be Gray
Finley 27
DETERMINING STRENGTH
1. To the tight end side.
2. To the multiple receiver side.
3. If it is a balanced set the strength will be called to the field
4. If it is a balanced set and the ball is in the middle of the field the
strength will be tight left.
5. The Mike backer will give a tight right or left call. The pass and
run strength may be different. The Free Safety identifies the pass
strength with a rip or liz call.
Finley 15
TERMINOLOGY
On vs. Off – When you are “On” you are the one of five
linebackers who has been designated the fourth rusher.
When you are “Off” you play your regular run or pass
responsibility.
Trail vs. Fold – When you are a Trail player you are
responsible for Counter, Throwback, Reverse and Boot. If
you are a Fold player you are responsible for cutback
usually in backside “A” gap.
Finley 30
RUN SUPPORT
There are three key elements of run support in structuring our Defensive Calls.
Alley: The description of the responsibility for the middle position between the
force and pursuit.
Fold: The description of the responsibility for inside leverage on an away run.
Assigned to any ball carrier that cuts back to the inside. This assigned
player should be in position to make the play. The Fold player should
always maintain leverage on the ball carrier and adjust angle to the ball.
Finley 31
OPTION RULES
• If you are responsible for A Gap you have Dive Back responsibility.
• If you are responsible for B Gap you have Dive Back responsibility.
• If you are responsible for D Gap you have Pitch Man responsibility.
Follow your rules and trust that your teammates will do the same.
Finley 18
DEFENSIVE LINE
• Our defensive linemen may be snap or technique players
depending on the call. They required to be quick.

BASIC FUNDAMENTALS
STANCE
• DOWN HAND IS DETERMINED BY THE SHADE YOU ARE LINED UP AT
• FEET ARE STAGGERED TOE TO HEEL
• HEELS OFF THE GROUND
• BUTT HIGHER THAN SHOULDER PADS. COACH SHOULDN’T BE ABLE TO SEE NUMBERS FROM END ZONE
VIEW
• DOWN HAND IS PLACED ON LOS IN FRONT OF HELMET. ATHLETE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE HIS HAND.
• OFF HAND IS BENT AT THE ELBOW OFF HIS LEG.
• ATHLETE SHOULD BE LOOKING THROUGH TOP OF HIS FACE MASK
• WEIGHT IS DISTRIBUTED 70/30
TAKE OFF
• A GREAT TAKE OFF IS ESSENTIAL FOR GREAT DEFENSIVE LINE PLAY.
• ENDS WILL TAKE OFF ON THE BALL OR FIRST FLASH OF MOVEMENT BY OL IN FRONT OF HIM.
• THE NOSE WILL MOVE ON BALL.
• SINCE WE WILL SLANT MOST OF THE TIME, OUR TAKE OFFS ARE DIFFERENT THAN THE TRADITIONAL.
• WHAT WE USE IS THE 45-VERTICAL TECHNIQUE.
• ACCORDING TO WHAT DIRECTION WE WILL BE MOVING, THE ATHLETE WILL STEP IN A 45 DEGREE
ANGLE AT HALF A MAN TO THE GAP HE IS MOVING TO. HIS SECOND STEP WILL BE VERTICAL USING A
BIG RIP.
• IT IS VITAL THAT THE ATHLETE WORKS VERTICAL ON HIS SECOND STEP FOR A FEW REASONS.
• TO HELP HIM NOT GET WASHED.
• SECOND, WORKING VERTICAL WILL HELP US TO GET OUR PADS SQUARE AND IN GREAT FOOTBALL
POSITION.
• ANY TIME WE 45-VERT WE ALWAYS USE A BIG RIP. WE TRY TO NEVER SWIM. HAVING GREAT PAD LEVEL
IS ESSENTIAL AND USING A BIG RIP WILL HELP THOSE EFFORTS.
• DURING PRACTICE, TRY TO USE BIG RIPS AND OTHER HAND MOTIONS IN EVERY DRILL. THE GOAL IS TO
USE HAND VIOLENCE ON EVERY PLAY. IF THEY CAN’T TOUCH YOU THEY CAN’T STOP YOU!
Finley 28
DEFENSIVE END
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
• END VS. RUN
• WHEN IN C OR D GAP (BOX)
• WHEN WE SLANT OUTSIDE TO C GAP WE ARE BOX PLAYERS AND OUR RESPONSIBILITIES ARE BASED
ON CONTAINING THE FOOTBALL
• QB (VS OPTION, ZONE READ)
• BOOTLEG (SPRINT OUT)
• REVERSE
• CUTBACK
• QB ON TRICK PLAYS
• NO MATTER WHICH GAP WE ATTACK, WE WILL SPILL. THE KEY IS AN INSIDE RELEASE BY THE OT.
• WHEN WE RECOGNIZE INSIDE RELEASE, WE GET OUR EYES INSIDE AND ATTACK THE 1ST THREAT INSIDE
SHOULDER (PULLER OR LEAD BLOCKER VS POWER).
• WE WILL ATTACK FIRST THREAT INSIDE SHOULDER WITH A RIP AND SPILL THE 1ST THREAT WE SEE.
• WE WANT THE OFFENSE TO GO LATERAL AND SPILLING BLOCKS WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS.

NOSE
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
NOSE VS RUN
• OUR NOSE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR EITHER STRONG OR WEAK A GAP IN OUR BASE PACKAGE
• DURING ANY SLANT/WHIP CALL: NOSE WILL PRESSURE ACCORDING TO THE CALL AND STRENGTH.

• DURING ANY STRONG/WEAK CALL: NOSE WILL PRESSURE OPPOSITE OF THE CALL (I.E. MIKE
STRONG, NOSE WILL ATTACK WEAK A GAP)
• DUE TO OUR SCHEME, THE NOSE’S RESPONSIBILITIES ARE NOT AS MENTALLY DEMANDING,
BUT THE MOST PHYSICALLY DEMANDING POSITION ON THE FIELD.
• REGARDLESS OF WHAT WE RUN, OUR NOSE MUST OWN THE A GAP HE IS ASSINGED TO.

Coverage Terminology
BANJO-This is a term used by the LB’s to help in determining who has #3 or RB man to
man and who will play the Rat technique. This term is used when we are only bringing
one LB on a blitz and we leave two for coverage
CONE – One defender will have inside leverage on the receiver, while another defender
will have outside leverage on the receiver.
CUT – To cut off an inside route by a receiver
DROP KICK – In cover 3 or 1 the corner will let the deep cross go to the free safety and
the corner will sink to rob the post from the other side.
MAN CLUE- Man coverage once a receiver is deeper than linebacker depth.
MEG – Man everywhere the receiver goes.
TRAIL- A technique used by a corner in man coverage. The corner will be hip to hip
with the receiver focusing on the inside number.
TRAP- Technique in which the corner aligns off and collisions any routes to the flats at 5
yards.
RAT TECHNIQUE Drop off of #3 if LB does not have a man. Get to 10 yards depth and
Square Shoulders to the Final Three. Do Not allow an inside route by anyone.
SPIN- Against trips in cover one the free safety will rotate down to cover the #3 receiver
man to man, and the weak Dog will roll back to play the deep middle.
Finley 30
Man Coverage
Strengths
• Close coverage
• Disrupts timing
• Eliminates throwing lanes
Weakness
• Personnel mismatches
• Receivers can run off or move Defenders on run plays
(motion)
• Vulnerable to the deep ball
• Weak versus the option
• Easy for QB’s to read (He’s open… I throw it)
Finley 70
Cover 1 is a Man Free Concept. We will use a 4 or 5 man pressure with this coverage. Everyone will have a man and one defender will be
free in the deep post. Linebackers must communicate with one another to who has #3 or the RB. Man to Man is important in that you can not
allow an inside release. If the offense gives or motions to a trips formation the FS will check spin and roll down take #3 man to man.
The Dog away from the check spin will spin to the middle of the field on the snap.
DB COVERAGE RULES:
CB = #1 FS = Free or #3 (vs. Trips) Dog = #2 or Spin (vs. Trips)
LB COVERAGE RULES: If the back stays into block attack the back to prevent any screens.
4-Man Pressure
1 RB RULE: Banjo #3
2 RB RULE: Banjo #3
5-Man Pressure :

BANJO: This is a term used by the LB’s to help in determining who has #3 or RB man to man and who will play the Rat technique. This term is
used when we are only bringing one LB on a blitz and we leave two for coverage.
RAT TECHNIQUE: Drop off of #3 if LB does not have a man. Get to 10 yards depth and Square Shoulders to the Final Three. Do Not allow an
inside route by anyone.
Note: Can Call Cover 1 Fly. This is a change-up that allows the Dog to travel to Trips and the Free Safety will play the middle of the field. 71

ZONE COVERAGE
Strengths
• Good for run and pass situations
• Protects against the deep ball
• Able to read the QB and break on the ball
• QB has to make reads
Weakness
• QB has many throwing windows
• Offenses will attack over stressed flat defenders
• You are either weak vertically or underneath.
Finley 83
No Cover Zones
The ‘No Cover Zone’ is an area that extends from the line of scrimmage to
a variable vertical depth of down field. The area between the inside
linebackers is identified as ‘The Hole’. The area outside the left hash mark
is identified as the ‘The Left Flat’. The area outside the right hash mark is
identified as ‘The Right Flat’.
Ball
This is why our corners must clear the 3 step pass action!
Finley 140
Green Coverage is a 4 Under 3 Deep Concept. There will be 3 defenders in the deep thirds of the field. There will be either 4 or 5
underneath defenders playing zone. We will use our 4 man package with this coverage.
LB Coverage Rules:
Final 3: Read the release of #3.
#3 Outside Release: Get Depth and Width on Drop and take Inside Leverage on Final 3.
#3 Vertical Release: Attack with Inside Leverage, Collision and look outside for Final 3.
#3 Inside Release: Use Backpedal to gain depth to take away Deeper Drags and Digs.
DOGS:
ALIGNMENT:
Both Dogs will be aligned at a depth of (3 yards). Their pre-snap width alignment will be determined by the formation the offense presents. When a Dog is
aligned on a TE or a Tackle, and there is only 1 Receiver outside, then he will be (1 yard) outside the TE’s or Tackle’s outside foot. When there are 2
Receivers outside, then he will align 5 yards deep, 1 yard inside to head up of the #2 Receiver. Lastly, if there are 3 Receivers to his side, he will align 5
yards deep, 1 yard inside to head up of the #2 Receiver. The inside foot will always be up and his shoulders parallel to the line of scrimmage.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The Dogs first responsibility in Green Coverage is to be a “Run First” player. The Dog on each side will key the end man on the line of scrimmage in order to
get his “Run/Pass” read. He is responsible for being a contain/cutback run force player to his side. Versus the option the Dog will slow play the QB and take
away the pitch. Versus the pass, the Dogs are a curl/flat defender. We are a route reading defense. Our Dogs will play the flat areas more aggressive than a
traditional Cover 3 defense. The Dogs can be more aggressive in flat areas because we will have 2 Linebackers helping with the underneath zones. The
Dog’s will play two different techniques depending on the number of receivers to his side. One: If the Dog only has 1 Receiver outside the end man on the
line of scrimmage (Tackle or TE), he will play the route of the #1 Receiver aggressively. Once the Dog gets his pass read he will physically look at the #1
Receiver and see what route he is running. If the #1 Receiver runs a hitch he will drive on that route in the flat. If the #1 Receiver runs a curl he will get
underneath the curl and take that route away. If the #1 Receiver runs any other type of route the Dog will get his eyes back on the QB and play the ball. Two:
If the Dog has 2 Receivers outside the end man on the line of scrimmage (Tackle or TE), he will get his pass read from the tackle or TE then he will
physically look at the #2 Receiver and see what route he is running. If the #2 Receiver runs a vertical route he will backpedal for 3 to 5 yards holding the
seam. While he is holding the seam he will physically look at the #1 Receiver to see if he is running a hitch route. If the #1 Receiver runs a hitch route, he
will come off the seam and drive to the flat area where the #1 Receiver is running the hitch route. If the #1 Receiver does not run a hitch route then the Dog
will get his eyes back on the QB and play the ball.

CORNERS & FREE SAFETY
ALIGNMENT:
The alignment of the Corners will look similar to their alignment rules when they are playing their man coverage techniques. The Corner will be slightly
inside (1 yard) of the #1 Receiver on his pre-snap alignment. However, because we are playing a 3 Deep coverage concept, the Corner may also adjust
his pre-snap alignment depending on the split of the #1 Receiver. For example: If the #1 Receiver is on the hash or 5 yards outside the hash, the Corner
can move his alignment to (1 yard) outside the receiver. The Corner’s depth when the ball is snapped is at (7-8) yards from the #1 Receiver. The only
exception to his depth rule is when he is aligned on a TE, or nub side of the formation. When the Corner is aligned on a TE, he will maintain his pre-snap
alignment of (7-8 yards) deep, but he will move to (3-5 yards) wide of the TE.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The Corner’s primary responsibility is to protect the deep outside 1/3’s of the field. A Corner should “NEVER” get beat deep playing a 3 Deep coverage
concept. A Corner should be “DEEPER THAN THE DEEPEST”. The Corners should eliminate any fade or corner routes by any receiver in his area.
We are a route reading defense. The Corner will execute a back peddle/shuffle technique on the snap, working for a depth of (15 yards). He will read the
#2 to #1 Receivers to his side. The Corner’s primary read is the #2 Receiver to his side. The #2 Receiver will tell him exactly what depth and route
combinations he will need to defend. The Corner’s primary rule is: When the #2 Receiver to his side is vertical and deep, he must maintain his depth and
wait for the receiver to come into his deep outside 1/3 area. However, if the #2 Receiver is not deep then he can play aggressively on the #1 Receiver to
his side. When the #2 Receiver is not vertical then the Corner is basically only concerned about the #1 Receiver’s route. Lastly, when the Corner gets a
vertical out of the #1 and #2 Receivers, he must split both receivers and be able to make a play on either individual that the ball is being thrown to.
FS:
ALIGNMENT:
The alignment of the FS will look just the same as he does in our man free Cover 1 package. The FS will always align or position himself depending on the
offense’s formation. For example: If there is a 2 Back offensive formation, the FS will align over the Tackle to the 2 Receiver side. If there is a 1 Back
offensive formation, the FS will cheat his alignment towards the passing strength of the formation. If there are 3 Receivers to one side he will cheat his
alignment to the 3 Receiver side. The FS should never be wider than the goal post. The FS’s depth will be (10-12) yards deep.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The FS’s primary responsibility is to protect the deep middle 1/3 of the field. The FS should “NEVER” get beat deep in the middle of the field playing a 3
Deep coverage concept. A FS should be “DEEPER THAN THE DEEPEST” than any Receiver that comes into his area. The FS should eliminate any post
or deep dig route over (25 yards). The FS will always get his read steps when the ball is snapped. His read steps consist of a slow back peddle, gaining no
more depth than (2-4 yards). The FS’s primary read is the uncovered lineman. If he gets a low hat or something aggressive he knows it’s probably a run. If he
gets a high hat (pass set) by the lineman he knows it’s probably a pass. Versus the option the FS will see the QB scrape flat down the L.O.S and will help on
the QB first and Pitch second. He is a QB to Pitch player. If the QB keeps it tackle the QB, and if the QB pitches it go and tackle the pitch player. When the
QB is “OFF” the line of scrimmage the FS has to be thinking pass first even though the offense might be executing a running play. If the ball is handed off
then the FS will fit fill down hill where needed. In turn, if the ball is not handed off he will play the pass. Versus the pass we are a route reading team. The FS
is free and will back peddle to a depth of (20 yards) while reading the QB’s eyes and shoulders. The FS will be ready to break on the ball when the QB’s
front hand comes off the ball. The FS will always be reading inside/out on the #2 or #1 Receiver. The inside receivers pose the fastest threat to the FS’s deep
middle 1/3 of the field. If no inside receiver threatens his area the FS will then look for any #1 Receiver to come into his area. The FS “MUST” not jump
any shallow (15-20 yard) underneath routes, because nearly 100% of the time when there is a shallow route in middle of the field there is a deeper route
behind it. Remember, it is the FS’s ultimate responsibility to protect the deep middle 1/3 of the field.
ADJUSTMENT RULES If we get a 4 WR/Doubles Formation the 1 away from the back we can make an “I’m Big Call”. The “I’m Big Call” tells him that

Gold Coverage is a single high safety pattern matching scheme. It is a 1 deep coverage that that can adapt to Cover 1 versus certain
route concepts, and Cover 3 versus certain route concepts. What this does is enable the defense to play an 8 man front to suffocate the run, but
mitigate the typical problem areas defenses face when they play a 3 deep zone or man coverage. The defense plays zone coverage against
pass patterns designed to beat man coverage, and man coverage versus pass patterns designed to beat zone coverage.

but he will move to (3-5 yards) wide of the TE.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The Corner’s primary responsibility depends on the route of the #2 receiver. The Corner will play a soft corner technique. We are a
route reading defense. The Corner will execute a back peddle/shuffle technique on the snap. He will have is butt to the side line
reading the #2 to #1 Receivers to his side. The Corner’s primary read is the #2 Receiver to his side. The #2 Receiver will tell him
exactly what depth and route combinations he will need to defend. If the #2 Receiver is vertical the Corner will be soft and sink.
He will either help from a shallow to deep angle on the corner route of the #2 Receiver, unless the hitch route of the #1 Receiver is
8 yards or less to a first down. If this is the case the corner will jump the hitch immediately. If the #2 Receiver’s release is out the
Corner will get a physical jam on the #1 Receiver and drive on any route in the flat area immediately and aggressively. Lastly,
when the Corner gets a vertical from the #1 and #2 Receivers, he will play the #1 Receiver man to man.

ALIGNMENT: NOTE: THE FS WILL GIVE A “ROGER/LUCY” CALL IN ORDER TO DETERMINE HOW WE WILL SHOW
OUR 2 DEEP SHELL LOOK PRIOR TO THE SNAP. THIS ALSO ALERTS OUR LB’S AS TO WHO IS BLITZING.
The FS will be (10-12 yards) deep to the side he gives the “RIP/LIZ” Call. The FS will make his call depending on the offense’s
formation. If there is a 2 Back formation he will make the call to the 2 Receiver side. If there is a 1 Back formation he will make
the call to the passing strength of the formation. The alignment of the FS to the “RIP/LIZ” Call side will be (3-4 yards) outside the
TE if there is only 1 Receiver split out wide. He will split the difference between the end man on the line of scrimmage and the #2
Receiver if there are 2 Receivers split out wide.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The FS’s first responsibility in Black Coverage is to be a “Pass First” player. The FS will key the end man on the line of

Versus the option the FS will get a level 1 read and take the pitch. Verses the pass the FS will be responsible for his 1/2 of the
field. The FS will use a width/back peddle technique on the snap in order to get his “Run/Pass” read. He has to get some
width on the snap of the ball so he can defend his 1/2 of the field if it is a pass. The FS will always read #2 Receiver to his
side. The FS only has to read four different releases of the #2 Receiver. The release of the #2 Receiver will tell him exactly
what to do in regards to defending his 1/2 of the field. The FS will play two different techniques verses the pass to his side.
One: If the #2 Receiver’s release is out, then the FS will physically look at the #1 Receiver and cover him on any deep route
in his 1/2 of the field. For example: If the #2 Receiver releases out and the #1 Receiver runs a fade route the FS “MUST” not
let the Receiver catch the fade. Secondly: If the #2 Receiver runs a vertical route the FS will cover him on any route the
Receiver runs in his 1/2 of the field. Third: #2 releases inside/under and crosses the field. Almost 100 % of the time if
one is leaving then one is coming. Drive to and blow up the dig or deep crossing route, gaining depth in the process.
Lastly, if both the #1 and #2 Receivers run vertical routes the FS will cover the #2 Receiver man to man. The Corner will
have the #1 Receiver man to man. “DO NOT” attempt to help on the #1 Receiver when both Receivers are vertical.
ADJUSTMENT RULES

DOG:
ALIGNMENT:
The Dog to the FS will be aligned at a depth of (5 yards). His pre-snap width alignment will be determined by the formation the offense presents. When a
Dog only has 1 Receiver on his side, then he will be (3 yards) outside Tackle’s outside foot. When there are 2 or 3 Receivers outside, then he will align one
yard inside to head up of the #2 Receiver. The Dog’s inside foot will always be up and his shoulders parallel to the line of scrimmage. The Dog away from
the FS “ROGER/LUCY” Call will line up at a depth of (10-12 yards) and (4 yards) outside the end man on the line of scrimmage and play his responsibilities
from there. If the Dog is away from the FS on the hash he will not get any wider than (4 yards) outside the hash.
RESPONSIBILITY: NOTE: THE DOG AWAY FROM THE FS’s SIDE WILL GIVE AN “I’M GONE” CALL TO THE BAT.
RUN ASSIGNMENT:
TO THE FS SIDE: The Dog’s first responsibility in Black Coverage is to be a “Run First” player. The Dog will key the end man on the line of scrimmage in
order to get his “Run/Pass” read. He is responsible for being a contain/cutback run force player to his side. Versus the option the Dog will make a level 1 and

AWAY FROM THE FS SIDE: The Dog away from the FS’s “ROGER/LUCY” Call will still key the end man on the line of scrimmage in order to get his
“Run/Pass” read even though he is aligned at (10-12 yards) deep. He is responsible for being a contain/cutback run force player to his side. Versus the option
the Dog will slow play the QB and take away the pitch.
PASS ASSIGNMENT: NOTE: THE DOG AWAY FROM THE FS’s SIDE WILL GIVE AN “I’M GONE” CALL TO THE BAT.
TO THE FS SIDE: The Dog will play two different techniques depending on the number of receivers to his side. One: If the Dog has a TE and Receiver to
his side he can play the route of the #1 Receiver aggressively . If the TE releases vertically the Dog will be allowed to play the flat area to his side extremely
tough because the FS is behind him reading the TE and will man clue the TE vertically. Secondly: If the Dog has 2 Receivers outside the end man on the line
of scrimmage , he will get his pass read from the EMOL then he will physically look at the #2 Receiver and see what route he is running. If the #2 Receiver
runs a vertical route he will backpedal for 3 yards holding the seam. While he is holding the seam he will physically look at the #1 Receiver to see if he is
running a hitch route. If the #1 Receiver runs a hitch route, he will come off the seam and drive to the flat area where the #1 Receiver is running the hitch
route. If the #1 Receiver does not run a hitch route then the Dog will get his eyes back on the QB and play the ball. IF THE #2 RECEIVER RUNS AN OUT
THE DOG MUST NOT FOLLOW HIM TO THE FLATS. THE CORNER WILL TRAP THE FLATS. THE DOG MUST SINK AND LOOK TO CUT

Trips Adjustments

BLUE COVERAGE is a 2 Deep pattern matching concept. We will never line up in Blue, we check to Blue when we get a trips
formation. There will be We will only use a 4 man pressure in Blue. Blue coverage allows the free safety to focus on #2 vertical while the weak dog
rotates to play any vertical route by #3. There will be 4 underneath defenders based on the type of pressure we will be bringing. The FS will make a
Roger or Lucy call to the WR Strength. He and the strong corner read 2 to 1. The Dog away from the FS will make an I’m Gone Call to the LB’s,
and play the deep half. The backside corner and Bat will play man on the backside receiver and back. What Blue coverage does is push the coverage
over to the trips to match the routes 5 over 3. In order to do this we have to leave the back side cornerback and Bat one on one, also known as
a MEG concept, (Man Everywhere He Goes). Blue Coverage puts us in a great position to defend anything the offense can draw up to the trips side.
LB COVERAGE RULES:
3-Man Pressure (Out)
BAT= (I’m Gone Call) = Final 2
MIKE = 3 Hole
BAT = Final 3
Final 3:
#3 Outside Release: Get Depth and Width on Drop and take Inside Leverage on Final 3.
#3 Vertical Release: Attack with Inside Leverage, Collision and look outside for Final 3.
#3 Inside Release: Use Backpedal to gain depth to take away Deeper Drags and Digs.
3 Hole: Spot Drop over the center of formation about 12 yards deep. Get Head on a Swivel looking for anything crossing.
Curl-Flat: Read Release of 2 to 1. (BACKSIDE 2 VS TRIPS)
#2 Outside Release: Get under #1 now and Leverage the Flat.
#2 Vertical Release: Attack #2 with Inside Leverage. Get Eyes on #1. If #1 goes vertical trail technique on #2. If #1 comes insides or stops attack #1.
#2 Inside Release: Get underneath #1 and Leverage the Flat.

Dogs
ALIGNMENT:
The Dog to the FS will be aligned at a depth of 5 yards 1 yard inside of the #2 receiver. The Dog’s inside foot will always be up and his shoulders parallel to
the line of scrimmage. The Dog away from the FS “ROGER/LUCY” Call will line up at a depth of (10-12 yards) and (4 yards) outside the end man on the
line of scrimmage and play his responsibilities from there. If the Dog is away from the FS on the hash he will not get any wider than (4 yards) outside the
hash.
Versus the option the Dog will make a level 1 and
take away the pitch.
PASS ASSIGNMENT: The Dog will get his pass read from the EMOL then he will physically look at the #2 Receiver and see what route he is running. If
the #2 Receiver runs a vertical route he will backpedal for 3 yards holding the seam. While he is holding the seam he will physically look at the #1 Receiver
to see if he is running a hitch route. If the #1 Receiver runs a hitch route, he will come off the seam and drive to the flat area where the #1 Receiver is
running the hitch route. If the #1 Receiver does not run a hitch route then the Dog will get his eyes back on the QB and play the ball.
AWAY FROM THE FS SIDE: NOTE: THE DOG AWAY FROM THE FS’s SIDE WILL GIVE AN “I’M GONE” CALL TO THE BAT.
TO THE FS SIDE: The Dog away from the “ROGER/LUCY” Call will read 3 strong to 1 weak. The Dog will use a width/back peddle technique on the
snap in order to get his “Run/Pass” read. He is responsible for being a contain/cutback run force player to his side. Versus the option the FS will get a level 1
read and take the pitch He has to get some width on the snap of the ball so he can defend his 1/2 of the field if it is a pass. The Dog will key the # 3 receiver
on the trips side. If the #3 receiver runs a deep cross the Dog will rob the deep post. If there is no deep crosser from the trips side the Dog will double cover
the single receiver on the backside with the corner.
Finley 137
Corners
ALIGNMENT:
The alignment of the Corners will look similar to their alignment rules when they are playing their man coverage techniques. The Corner will be slightly
inside (1 yard) of the #1 Receiver on his pre-snap alignment. However, the Corner may also adjust his pre-snap alignment depending on the split of the #1
Receiver. For example: If the #1 Receiver is on the hash or 5 yards outside the hash, the Corner can move his alignment to (1 yard) outside the receiver. The
Corner’s depth when the ball is snapped is at (5-8) yards from the #1 Receiver. The only exception to his depth rule is when he is aligned on a TE, or nub
side of the formation. When the Corner is aligned on a TE, he will maintain his pre-snap alignment of (7-8 yards) deep, but he will move to (3-5 yards) wide
of the TE.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The Corner’s primary responsibility is to read 2 to 1. A Corner should “NEVER” get beat deep on any route that comes into his outside 1/4 area. A Corner
should be “DEEPER THAN THE DEEPEST” than any deep route in his area. The Corner should eliminate any fade or corner routes by any receiver in his
area. We are a route reading defense. The Corner will execute a back peddle/shuffle technique on the snap. He will have is butt to the side line reading the #2
to #1 Receivers to his side. The Corner’s primary read is the #2 Receiver to his side. The #2 Receiver will tell him exactly what depth and route combinations
he will need to defend. The Corner’s primary rule is: When the #2 Receiver to his side is vertical and deep, he must maintain his depth and wait for the
receiver to come into his deep outside 1/4 area. However, if the #2 Receiver is not deep then he can play aggressively on the #1 Receiver to his side. When
the #2 Receiver is not vertical then the Corner is basically only concerned about the #1 Receiver’s route. When the Corner gets a vertical out of the #1 and #2
Receivers, he will play the #1 Receiver man to man. Lastly, If the #2 receiver runs a deep out or corner route the corner will trap the out breaking
route by the #2 receiver and the FS will play the vertical route by the #1 receiver. This allows us to effectively play the flood concept.
ALIGNMENT:
The alignment of the Corners will be slightly inside (1 yard) of the #1 Receiver on his pre-snap alignment. The Corner’s depth when the ball is snapped is at
5 yards from the #1 Receiver. The only exception to his depth rule is when he is aligned on a TE, or nub side of the formation. When the Corner is aligned on
a TE, his alignment will be 7-8 yards deep, but he will move to 3-5 yards wide of the TE.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The Corner’s primary responsibility is man to man on the #1 Receiver.

Free Safety
ALIGNMENT: NOTE: THE FS WILL GIVE A “ROGER/LUCY” CALL IN ORDER TO DETERMINE HOW WE WILL SHOW OUR
2 DEEP SHELL LOOK PRIOR TO THE SNAP. THIS ALSO ALERTS OUR LB’S AS TO WHO IS BLITZING.
ALIGNMENT:
The FS will be (8-10 yards) deep to the side he gives the “ROGER/LUCY” Call. The alignment of the FS to the “ROGER/LUCY” Call side will be 1 yard
inside of the #3 receiver, being that the hook curl player and weak Dog will be responsible for the #3 receiver.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The FS’s first responsibility in Blue Coverage is to be a “Pass First” player. The FS will key the end man on the line of scrimmage in order to get his
“Run/Pass” read. He is responsible for being a contain/cutback run force player to his side. Versus the option the FS will get a level 1 read and take the pitch.
Verses the pass the FS will be responsible for defending his middle 1/4 of the field. The FS will buzz his feet on the snap in order to get his “Run/Pass” read.
He will not back up on the snap of the ball. The FS will read #2 Receiver to his side. The FS only has to read three different releases of the #2 Receiver. The
release of the #2 Receiver will tell him exactly what to do in regards to defending his area. The FS will play two different techniques verses the pass to his
side. One: If the #2 Receiver’s release is in or out, then the FS will physically look at the #1 Receiver and double cover him with the Corner and eliminate
any route that comes into his area. Secondly: If the #2 Receiver runs a vertical route the FS will cover him man to man. If there is only 1 Receiver to the FS’s
side then he can double cover that receiver with the Corner. IF # 3 RUNS A DEEP CROSS THE FS WILL NOT CHASE . He will give an in call the strong
Bat and Dog on the backside who are reading #3. Lastly, If the #2 receiver runs a deep out or corner route the corner will trap the out breaking route by the
#2 receiver and the FS will play the vertical route by the #1 receiver. This allows us to effectively play the flood concept.
ADJUSTMENT RULES
1. If the offense motions into 2 x 1 or 2 X 2 set we will check out to Gray coverage.
2. If the offense motions into a 3 x2 or 4 x 1 set we will check into Zero coverage.

(CONE TECHNIQUE) ON THE #1 RECEIVER TO THE WEAK SIDE. THIS MEANS THE WEAK DOG AND CORNER WILL DOUBLE
COVER THE #1 RECEIVER. We will only use a 4 man pressure in Brown coverage. Brown coverage still allows the free safety to focus on #2
vertical while the strong Bat will play any vertical route by #3. There will be 4 underneath defenders based on the type of pressure we will be
bringing. The FS will make a Roger or Lucy call to the WR Strength. He and the strong corner read 2 to 1. The Dog away from the FS will make an
I’m Gone Call to the LB’s, and play the deep half. The backside Bat will play man on the and back or 1 st crosser. What Brown coverage does is push
the coverage over to the trips to match the routes 4 over 3 Brown Coverage still puts us in a good position to defend anything the offense can draw
up to the trips side, while allowing us to match up against teams who want to exploit single coverage on the backside.
