Executive Summary:
“Job satisfaction does not seem to reduce absence, turnover and perhaps
accident rates”.
-Robert L. Kahn
Human life has become very complex and completed in now-a-days. In
modern society the needs and requirements of the people are ever
increasing and ever changing. When the people are ever increasing and
ever changing, when the peoples needs are not fulfilled they become
dissatisfied. Dissatisfied people are likely to contribute very little for any
purpose. Job satisfaction of industrial workers us very important for the
industry to function successfully.
Apart from managerial and technical aspects, employers can be considered
as backbone of any industrial development. To utilize their contribution
they should be provided with good working conditions to boost their job
satisfaction.
Any business cab achieve success and peace only when the problem of
satisfaction and dissatisfaction of workers are felt understood and solved,
problem of efficiency absenteeism labor turnover require a social skill of
understanding human problems and dealing with them scientific
investigation serves the purpose to solve the human problems in the
industry.
 Pay.
 The work itself.
 Promotion
 The work group.
 Working condition.
 Supervision.
 Job satisfaction has a variety of effects. These effects may be seen in the
context of an individual’s physical and mental health, productivity,
absenteeism, and turnover.
Hence we decided to do a “To analysis about job satisfaction
among the bank employees” Which help to know job satisfaction &
motivational attitude among bank employees.

7
OBJECTIVES OF STUDY:
 To determine the level of satisfaction of the respondents regarding
their job.
 To study the various factors influencing job satisfaction.
 To study about the satisfaction regarding the job nature, salary, and
benefits given to the employees.
 To study about the transfer process in the banks.
 To know about the behavior of top level employees with their junior
employees.

To study about the extra facilities provided to the employees.
This research paper helps me to understand & analyze to job satisfaction
among bank employees, strength & weaknesses, different behavior of the
bank employees & vital experience to communicate with people. The
sample was selected of them who are the employees of the bank.
It was also collected through personal visits to persons, by formal and
informal talks and through filling up the questionnaire prepared. The data
has been analyzed by using mathematical & statistical tools. The sample
size of my research paper was limited to 50 people.
After conducting this “To analysis about job satisfaction among the
bank employees” I come to the conclusion.
From the study, the researcher has come to know that most of the
respondents have job satisfaction; the management has taken the best
efforts to maintain cordial relationship with the employees. Due to the
working conditions prevailing in this bank, job satisfaction of each
respondent seems to be the maximum.

INTRODUCTION:
This survey is conducted to know the Job Satisfaction among the bank employees. This survey
contains two important factors that are Banking Industry and Job Satisfaction. Hence the
introduction of these two factors is important.
Job Satisfaction:
Job satisfaction represents the constellations of person’s attitude towards or about the job. In general,
job satisfaction is the attitude towards the job as a whole. Job satisfaction is a function of satisfaction
with different aspects of job, i.e. supervision, pay, works itself, co-workers, promotion, etc., and of
the particular weighting or importance one attaches to these respective components.
The factors causing job satisfaction, which level factors such as there relating to satisfaction with the
job itself. The factors which cause job dissatisfaction called hygiene factors are more concerned with
conditions of work such as pay and supervision. At no time does Herzberg argue a job satisfactory,
except may be for a short run.

Philip apple while has listed five major components of job satisfaction as,
1. Attitude towards work group.
2. General workings conditions.
3. Attitude towards company.
4. Monetary benefits and
5. Attitude towards supervision

(i) To Motivate - as a definition means “give an incentive for action.” For the small business
owner, motivation is a huge factor for either the success or demise of your company. You
need to devise an "employee motivation program".

Relevant with Bank:

Taking about the Banking Industry it is a system of trading in money which involved safeguarding
deposits and making funds available for borrowers, banking developed in the Middle Ages in
response to the growing need for credit in commerce.

The banking section will navigate through all the aspects of the Banking System in India. It will
discuss upon the matters with the birth of the banking concept in the country to new players adding
their names in the industry in coming few years.

Without a sound and effective banking system in India it cannot have a healthy economy. The
banking system of India should not only be hassle free but it should be able to meet new challenges
posed by the technology and any other external and internal factors.

Indian Banking system has played a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the country.
The system is expected to continue to be sensitive to the growth and development needs of all the
segments of the society.

The banking system that will evolve will be transparent in its dealings and adopt global best
practices in accounting and disclosures driven by the motto of value enhancement for all

9
stakeholders. Financial Sector Reforms set in motion in 1991 have greatly changed the face of Indian
Banking.

The banking industry has moved gradually from a regulated environment to a deregulated market
economy. The market developments kindled by liberalization and globalization have resulted in
changes in the intermediation role of banks.

1. HISTORY OF BANK
(i) History of the Indian Banking Industry: The first bank in India, though conservative,
was established in 1986, from 1786 till today, the journey of Indian Banking System
can be Segregated into there distinct phase they areas mentioned below.
First Phase – The General Book of India was set up in the year 1786. The established Bank
of Bengal (1809). Bank of Bombay (1840) and Bank of Madras (1843) as independent units
sand called it presidency Bank. These three banks were amalga mated in 1920 and imperial
Bank of India was established which started as private shareholders banks, mostly Europeans
in 1865 Allahabad Bank was established and first time exclusively by Indians. Then Punjab
National Bank Ltd. Was set up in 1894 with headquarters at Lahore between 1906 and 1913,
Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Indian Bank and Bank
of Mysore were set up, the reserve Bank of India the central Bank of India came in 1935.
Second Phase: Government took major steps in this Indian Banking sector reform after
independence in 1955; it nationalized imperial Bank of India with extensive banking
facilities on a large scale especially in rural and semi-urban areas.
Third phase: This phase has introduced many products and facilities in the banking sector in
its reforms measure, in 1991 under the chairmanship of M Narasimham, a committee was set
up by his name which worked for the liberalization of banking practices, the country is
flooded with foreign bank and their ATLM Stations. Efforts are being put to give a
satisfactory service to customers. Phone banking and net Nanking is introduced.
Steps taken by Government to regulate banking institutions in the country.

1959 Nationalization of state bank of India’s subsidiaries.
1961 Insurance cover extended to deposits.
1969 Nationalization of major 14 banks
1971 Creation of credit guarantee corporation.
1975 Creation of regional rural banks.
1980 Nationalization of 7 bank with deposits over 200 crores.
Public Sector banks in India: There are 26 public sector banks in India.

1. BANKING INDUSTRY

10
Banking is the life hood of modem commerce and trade. The dependence of trade and commerce on
banking has become so great that any cession of their activities even for a day could paralyze the
economic life of a nation.

2. HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND BANKS

The key to the success of any organization lies in how efficiently the organization manages its'
human resources. The principle applies equally and perhaps more aptly to 5cr.ice institutions like
banks. The issue is all the more relevant to the public sector banks who are striving hard to keep
pace with the technological changes and meet the challenges of globalization.

3. IMPORTANCE OF JOB SATISFACTION

(i) Job satisfaction has some relation with the mental health of the people: dissatisfaction with
one's job may have especially volatile spillover effects. For instance, people feel bad about
many other things such as a family life, leisure activities, sometimes even life itself. Many
unresolved personality problems and maladjustments arise out of a person's inability to find
satisfaction in his work. Both scientific study and causal observation provide ample evidence
that job satisfaction is an important for the physiological adjustment and happy living of an
individual.
(ii) Job satisfaction has some degree of positive correlation with physical health of individuals.
(iii)Spreads goodwill about the organization.
(iv) Individuals can ‘live with’ the organization
(v) Reduces absenteeism and turnover.

Hence happier people are within their job, the more satisfied they are said to be. Job satisfaction is
not the same as motivation, although it is clearly linked. Job design aims to enhance job satisfaction
and performance; methods include job rotation, job enlargement and job enrichment.

Other influences on satisfaction include the management style and culture, employee involvement,
empowerment and autonomous work groups. Job satisfaction is a very important attribute which is
frequently measured by organizations.

4. BENEFITS OF JOB SATISFACTION

(i) Positive Reinforcement
Showing your employees that you are willing to recognize there accomplishments and hard
work is undoubtedly the simplest and least costly methods of employee motivation. There are
many ways to convey this to your employees. Token gifts, Employee of the month awards, or
a pat on the back, all show how much you appreciate them. As you increase your employee's
sense of pride and accomplishment he or she feels better about there job and in the end are
more productivity.
(ii) Happy Employees

11
It’s not illogical to determine that the more satisfied the employee, the better he or she will
perform. So the environment that you create for your employee must be one that is
constructive to positive energy. If your employee feels happy when they are working then
they will be naturally encouraged to work.

5. RELATION BETWEEN JOB SATISFACTION AND JOB PERFORMANCE

In the field of Industrial/Organizational psychology, one of the most researched areas is the
relationship between job satisfaction and job performance Landy (1989) described this
relationship as the “Holy Grail” of Industrial psychology.

Research linking job performance with satisfaction and other attitudes has been studied since at least
1939, with the Hawthorne studies Roethlisberger & Dickson. In Judge et al. (2001), it was found by
Bray field and Crockett that there is only a minimal relationship between job performance and job
satisfaction. However, Judge et al. (2001) cited that there are other studies by Locke, Schwab &
Cummings (1970), and Vroom (1964) that have shown that there is at least some relationship
between those variables. Iaffaldano and Muchinsky did an extensive analysis on the relationship
between job performance and job satisfaction.

6. FACTORS AFFECTING THE JOB SATISFACTION OF AN EMPLOYEE

(i) Pay – Amount and fairness or equity of salary.
(ii) Promotion – Opportunities and fairness of promotions.
(iii) Supervision – Fairness and competence at managerial tasks by one’s supervisor.
(iv) Benefits – Insurance, vacation, and other fringe benefits.
(v) Contingent rewards – Sense of respect, recognition, and appreciation.
(vi) Operating procedures – Policies, procedures, rules, perceived red tape.
(vii) Coworkers – Perceived competence and pleasantness of one’s colleagues.
(viii) Nature of work – Enjoyment of the actual tasks themselves.
(ix) Communication - Sharing of information within the organization (verbally or in
writing)

7. MOTIVATION AND JOB SATISFACTION

Job satisfaction: It is the pleasure derived from a job well done, from knowing that what you do is
appreciated, valuable to someone. Satisfaction is another interesting work-related phenomenon. We
often use this word without really thinking about its meaning. However, the satisfaction issue in
work environments is far from simple, for, according to the great management theorist Frederick
Herzberg, job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction are caused by total different sets of factors.

Motivation: This act only works when people are receptive to it, and when it is done in the most
applicable way. That is, when it feeds the needs of the person to be motivated.

12

in bank so that they can improve their services.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
This report is based on primary as well secondary data, however primary data collection was given
more importance since it is overhearing factor in attitude studies. One of the most important users of
research methodology is that it helps in identifying the problem, collecting, analyzing the required
information data and providing an alternative solution to the problem .It also helps in collecting the
vital information that is required by the top management to assist them for the better decision
making both day to day decision and critical ones.
Data collection:

1. Primary Data:
Primary data are those, which were collected afresh & for the first time and thus happen to be
original in character. However, there are many methods of collecting the primary data. All have not
been used for the purpose of this project. The ones that have been used are-

13
 Face to face communication (Interviewing)
 Observation

2. Secondary Data:
When an investigator uses the data that has been already collected by others is called Secondary
data. The secondary data could be collected from the journals, reports and various publications. The
advantage of the secondary data can be economical, both in the terms of money and time spent. In
this report secondary data was collected through-
 Company balance sheets
 Reports and records
 Flow charts and tables
 Websites

Duration of Study: The study was carried out for a period of two months.
Sampling:
1. Sampling technique (Procedure):
The sample was selected of them who are the employee of bank. It was also collected through
personal visits to persons, by formal and informal talks and through filling up the questionnaire
prepared. The data has been analyzed by using mathematical/Statistical tool.
2. Sample Size:
Sample size refers to the number to be selected form the universe to continue the sample for
conducting a survey. The sample size should be optimum.
Therefore the sample size taken is of 50(Employees).
3. Sample design:
Data has been presented with the help of bar graph, pie charts, line graphs etc. The Following are the
questionnaires that was been carried out at the time of survey. The Questionnaires also shows the
value of satisfaction & perception of employees towards job satisfaction.
4. Tools for analysis:
The following statistical tools are used in the study for the purpose of analysis.

Percentage analysis:
It refers to a special kind of ratio; percentages are used to comparison between two or
more series of data and also to describe the relation. Since the percentage reduced
everything to a common base and there by allow meaningful comparison to be made.

Chi – square test:

14
Chi – square test is applied to test the goodness of fit to verify the distribution of
observed data with assumed theoretical distribution. Therefore it is a measure to study
the divergence of actual and expected frequencies; Karl Pearson’s has developed a
method to test the difference between the theoretical (hypothesis) and the observed
value.
Chi – square test (X2) = (O – E) 2 / E
Degrees Of Freedom = V = (R – 1) (C -1)
Were,
‘O’ = Observed Frequency
‘E’ = Expected Frequency
‘R’ = Number of Rows
‘C’ = Number of Columns.
NOTE: For all the chi-square test the table value has taken @ 5% level of
significance.

Interpretation:
The above table indicates that
 34% of the respondents belongs to the age group of less than 30 years.
 48% of the respondents belongs to the age group of 30- 45 years.
 18% of the respondents belongs to the age group of above 45 years.
Conclusion:
There are some other conclusions are also included:
1. Most of the employees are satisfied with the nature of the job, job security and the attitude of
the boss.
2. There is a large no. of employees (specially the lower level employees who’s salary is below
2lac) who are not happy with their salary.
3. The promotion system is not good enough in the bank because many employees are not
satisfied with the promotion chances.
4. The extra facilities like personal loans and leave on requirements are good enough but most
important facility i.e. house is not provided to many employees.
5. The car facility is only providing to high level or class.
6. Most of the employees are working 8 hours daily which is a normal time for working.
7. The transfer process is generally takes place between 3-5 years & the basis for transfer
process are the promotion and as per the organization requirement.
8. Some of the employee prefer other job those who are not satisfied either with the salary or
with the promotion chances.
9. Some employees are not satisfied with the present no. of employees in the bank.
Which may cause to the extra work for them and hence, there is a chance of dissatisfaction of
them.
From the study, the researcher has come to know that most of the respondents have job satisfaction;
the management has taken the best efforts to maintain cordial relationship with the employees. Due
to the working conditions prevailing in this bank, job satisfaction of each respondent seems to be the
maximum.

23
Suggestion:
1. There must be some increment in the salary of the employees of lower otherwise this cause for
the job dissatisfaction among them and hence the productivity of the bank may decrease.
2. The firm’s must have to improve the promotion chances otherwise; this may create job
dissatisfaction among the bank employees.
3. The house facility must be increased because it is very fundamental and basic need for an
employee.
4. The festival offer facility must be improved to attract the customers.
Limitations:
1. Some employees were very busy and not ready to give the time.
2. The timing of the bank and my college is same which also create problem in conducting the
survey.
3. Some employee fear in filling the questionnaire.
