Relationship of the Employees Revenue towards

Level of Work Motivation in MEDQ ENTERPRISES, Carmona, Cavite

INTRODUCTION

MEDQ ENTERPRISES is a family-owned business. Founded by the visionary couple

Manolo Durumpili Quiamzon, and Evangelina Duquilar Quiamzon in Carmona, Cavite in 2007.

This subcontractor enterprise produces deburred Alloy Die Cast Products. Deburred means to

remove burrs from a work piece, and to remove dirt and debris from raw wool. It can be used in

multiple products like, automotive vehicles, laptops, and etc. MEDQ ENTERPRISES moved

into a bigger place and expanded to cater the needs of the customer in the year 2015. The

company’s mission is, “To be the customer’s first choice as a supplier of safe, high quality,

reliable subcontractor and to continually develop our services to meet and exceed customers’

expectations and contribute to the success of the company through the provision of timely,

consistently high quality”. While the vision is, “Working with passion and focus on quality and

reliable for our customers and in doing always live up to our company values”. Lastly, the

company’s core values; Unity and Diversity, Honor and Respect, and Integrity and

Professionalism. (MEDQ ENTERPRISES, 2007)

This article examines cognitive, affective, and behavioral measures of motivation and

reviews their use throughout the discipline of experimental social psychology. We distinguish

between two dimensions of motivation (outcome-focused motivation and process-focused

motivation). Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular

way. And it is the general desire or willingness of someone to do something. A general desire,

need or want that generates the energy required for someone to behave in a particular way. This

analysis seeks to advance research in experimental social psychology by highlighting the need

for caution when selecting measures of motivation and when interpreting fluctuations captured

by these measures. Because motivation is a psychological construct that cannot be observed or

recorded directly, studying it raises an important question: how to measure motivation?

Researchers measure motivation in terms of observable cognitive (e.g., recall, perception),

affective (e.g., subjective experience), behavioral (e.g., performance), and physiological (e.g.,

brain activation) responses and using self-reports. Furthermore, motivation is measured in

relative terms: compared to previous or subsequent levels of motivation or to motivation in a

different goal state (e.g., salient versus non-salient goal). Ultimately, motivation enables goal-

directed behavior and is evident through action. However, behavior is not merely the outcome of

motivation; researchers often use behavior to infer motivation and capture the strength of

motivation by the extent to which one’s how to Measure Motivation 331 © 2014 John Wiley &

Sons Ltd Social and Personality Psychology Compass 8/7 (2014): actions are consistent with a

focal goal. Measures such as choice, speed, performance, or persistence exerted in the course of

goal pursuit capture the goal congruence of behavior and can thus assess the strength of one’s

motivation to pursue the goal. Speed In many cases, motivation can manifest itself in terms of

the amount of time it takes an individual to act in the pursuit of a goal. This duration measure

(i.e., speed) can be applied to various aspects of behavior to measure the strength of motivation.

Behavioral measures of speed include how fast an individual completes a task or how fast she

moves from one task to the next. For example, participants in a study by Kivetz, Urminsky, and

Zheng (2006) rated songs online for reward certificates. In performance, motivation can also be

measured in terms of level of performance at a goal-related task – especially if performance is

variable and integral to the goal. Performance measures include accuracy, amount (i.e., how

much has been done), and highest level of achievement. Another aspect of performance is

persistence, or the extent to which an individual continues steadfastly in the pursuit of a goal in

spite of inherent difficulties. In choice, we use the term choice broadly to describe the act of

selecting between objects (e.g., apple versus cookie) and courses of action (e.g., donating,

exercising). Because of their binary nature, choice measures often seem merely indicative of the

direction rather than the strength of motivation. Research on self-control often relies on choice

measures to assess motivation. For example, to demonstrate that simultaneous (versus

sequential) choices increases the motivation to adhere to long-term (intellectual) goals.

“Minimum Wage Rates” refer to the lowest wage rate/s, as fixed by the Board, that an

employer is obliged to pay his workers. “Non-Agriculture” refers to establishments and

industries other than agriculture and retail or service, regardless of employment size. They have a

new minimum basic wage of 512.00. “Agriculture” refers to farming in all its branches and

among others, includes the cultivation and tillage of the soil, production, cultivation, growing

and harvesting of any agricultural or horticultural commodities, dairying, raising of livestock or

poultry, the culture of fish and other aquatic products in farms or ponds, and any activities

performed by a farmer or on farm as an incident to or in conjunction with such farming

operations, but does not include the manufacturing and/or processing of sugar, coconut, abaca,

tobacco, pineapple, aquatic or other farm products. The workers can receive 475.00 as their basic

wage. “Plantation Agricultural Enterprise” is one engaged in agriculture with an area of more

than twenty four (24) hectares in a locality or which employs at least twenty (20) workers. Any

other agricultural enterprise shall be considered as "Non-Plantation Agricultural Enterprise". The

workers can also receive 475.00 as their new minimum wage rate. (National Wages and

Productivity Commission, 2017)

What really motivates employees to be productive? Is it money? Recognition? Job

satisfaction? Benefits? Opportunities? An employee is a person employed for wages or salary,

especially at nonexecutive level. It is an individual who works part-time or full-time under a

contract of employment, whether oral or written, express or implied, and has recognized rights

and duties. They are recognized as the most crucial asset of today’s organizations by both

practitioners and academics. Employee satisfaction is stressed as one of the most important

drivers of continuous improvement and satisfied customers in most classical total quality

management (TQM) literature. But what really motivates employees to be productive in their

jobs? Two often mentioned motivators are money and job satisfaction. We hear that better pay

motivates employees to be more productive. We also hear that “happy employees are productive

employees.” (National Business Research Institute, Inc.)

Money is a crucial incentive to work motivation. It is a medium of exchange and the

means by which employees can purchase things to satisfy their needs and desires. It also serves

as a scorecard by which employees assess the value that the organization places on their services.

Employees can also compare their value to others based on their pay. In addition to its exchange

value, money also has symbolic value. Wage is part of the labor contract that covers the

monetary compensation of labor. Employer and employee are free to determine the wage by

means of an individual labor agreement or a collective labor agreement, if it complies with

certain legal conditions. These conditions are amongst others: The agreed upon wage by the

employer and the employee must be equal to or higher than the legal minimum wage, including

the agreed amount of working hours; The wage amount should preferably be established in

writing. Wage is calculated by period of time (for example, hourly, weekly or monthly wage),

and is due from the time the employee starts working until the end of employment.

The findings of this study will determine the relationship of employees’ income towards

level of their work motivation and it aims to benefit the following:

To the students, this study would help the students to identify the categories of work

motivation and how they can be motivated in different ways when they become an employee.

To the future researchers, this research paper may serve as a guide or basis that will give

a lot of information for the future researchers in case they will conduct a study that is related to

the topic discussed in this paper.

To the employees, this study would help the employees to assess their selves on how they

should be motivated or this would also help them to evaluate their performances based on their

ways of being motivated. This research might also give them information that would widen their

knowledge regarding on how motivation can give great performances.

To the Deburring Services, this study would be a source for them to

know the different ways on how they will motivate their employees that will

result to a good performance and it would help them to build a strong

foundation towards their employees. This research would also help them to

understand the level of motivation of their employees.

The study was conducted to determine the relationship between employees’ revenue

towards level of work motivation in MEDQ ENTERPRISES, Carmona, Cavite. More

specifically, it will answer the following questions:

1. What is the monthly income of the respondents?

1.1. Below minimum;

1.2. Minimum; and

1.3. Above minimum?

2. What is the respondents’ level of work motivation in terms of:

2.1. Speed;

2.2. Performance; and

2.3. Choice?

3. What is the relationship of the employees’ revenue towards level of work motivation in

MEDQ ENTERPRISES, Carmona, Cavite?

The researchers believe that most of the respondents from MEDQ ENTERPRISES fall in

the minimum wage earners because they receive minimum of 512.00 per day only. It is assumed

that the level of work motivation of the employees’ are high in terms of speed, performance, and

choice because motivation has a great impact and has an influence on an employees’ job.

There’s a connection between the employees’ revenue and the work motivation in

MEDQ ENTERPRISES and the researchers concluded that since the employees’ receive

minimum wage, they are motivated on their job.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter includes the research design, population of the study, data gathering procedure, and
statistical treatment.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The research entitled Relationship of the Employees Revenue towards Level of Work
Motivation in MEDQ Enterprises, Carmona, Cavite used quantitative approach. According to
Bryman, A. and Bell, E. (2015) Quantitative research methods describe and measure the level of
occurrences on the basis of numbers and calculations. Accordingly, quantitative data collection
methods are based on numbers and mathematical calculations, and based on random sampling
and structured data collection instruments.

LOCALE AND POPULATION OF THE STUDY

The study would be conducted at MEDQ Enterprises located at Carmona, Cavite. The
respondents of this study would be the employees of the MEDQ Enterprises. The researchers
will use systematic random sampling. In accordance to Adi Bhat, Systematic sampling is a
probability sampling method where the elements are chosen from a target population by
selecting a random starting point and selecting other members after a fixed ‘sampling interval’.
Sampling interval is calculated by dividing the entire population size by the desired sample size.

Formula:

n = N/1+Ne2

n = sample size

N = total population of respondents

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

In the conduct of the study, the researchers would use a survey questionnaire to gather the
pieces of information that will examine the relationship between employees’ revenue towards
level of work motivation of the respondents. The survey questionnaire is a researcher-made
instrument. This will be validated by three professional teachers to determine the preciseness of
the following question that is included in the survey questionnaire.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

After the validation process of the survey questionnaire, the researchers will follow the
data gathering procedure:

 The researchers will seek for the permission of University of Perpetual Help
System – GMA, Campus to conduct a survey to the MEDQ Enterprises that will
be a source of the respondents.
 The researchers will get the total population of the employees in MEDQ
Enterprises to determine the target respondents.
 After getting the final respondents, the researchers will explain the purpose of the
study and will assure the respondents that the information that will gather will be
kept confidential.
 The researchers will distribute the questionnaire to the respondents and will give
them enough time to answer the questions.
 The questionnaires will be submitted to the researchers after answering. The
answers of respondents will be tallied, quantified, tabulated, statistically treated,
analyzed, and interpreted.

STATISTICAL INSTRUMENT

Pearson’s r Correlation

Correlation coefficients are used in statistics to measure how strong a relationship is

between two variables. There are several types of correlation coefficient: Pearson’s correlation
(also called Pearson’s R) is a correlation coefficient commonly used in linear regression. If
you’re starting out in statistics, you’ll probably learn about Pearson’s R first. In fact, when
anyone refers to the correlation coefficient, they are usually talking about Pearson’s.
