● Dedicated to: Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and
Lord Mahavira
● Attraction: Exquisite carvings and sculpture
Badami Temple

In Karnataka are centers of early Chalukyan
art.
● It is located at a distance of about 500km
from Banglore and is well connected by
road.
● Made of reddish- golden Sandstone.
History

● Center of ancient Chalukyan Glory.


● Home to several rock-cut temples and struc-
tural temples.
● Historically, Vatapi suffered defeat at the
hands of the Pallava king Narasimhavarma
Pallavan and his general Sirutonda Naaya-
nar in the year 642CE.
● Twelve years later, the Chalukyas recap-
tured Vatapi and lead a succesful attack on
Kanchipuram, the capital of Pallavas.
History

● Legend has it that there were 2 demon


siblings Vatapi and Ilvala, who had a trick
by which they could kill and make a meal of
mendicants passing by. Their tricks worked
until Agastya muni came by and counter-
tricked them and brought an end to Vatapi's
life. Two of the hills in Badami are supposed
to represent the demons Ilvalan and Vatapi.
Temple Style and Components
● Style: Fusion of Nagara and Dravidian
● Components: An Entrance(Gopuram) with
Mukha Mandapa(Verandah) supported by stone
columns and brackets leading to a columned
Mandapa(main hall, Mahamandapa) and then
to Garbha Griha (small square shrine) cut deep
inside the cave.
Badami- Set of Temples

● Several temples dating from Chalukyan pe-


riod in Badami.
● First set of temples- Group of four on adja-
cent hill to the Bhutanata tank, connected
through flights of stairs.
First Temple


Dates back to 5th century CE.
● Has gigantic carvings of Ardhanareshwara
and Harira manifestations of Shiva in bas re-
lief.
● Enshrines a Shivalingam.
● In the adjacent wall, there is carving of
cosmic dance of Shiva Nataraja depicted
with eighteen arms.
● There are also reliefs of Ganpati, Shan-
mukha and Mahishasuramardhini.
Second Temple
● Second temple bears images of Vishnu in his
Varaha and Trivikrama incarnations.
● Reached through a flight of 64 stairs from the
first one.
● On its ceiling, are carvings of Vishnu on Garuda
and several other scenes from the Puranas.

Third Temple

The third rock cut temple is reached from 2nd
temple through a flight of 60 steps.
● 100 feet deep cave, with inscriptions dating
Vishnu temple to 578 CE during the period of
Kiritivarma Chalukya.
● There are carved images of the Narasimha and
Trivikrama avataras of Vishnu.
● There are murals depicting the divine marriage
of Shiva and Parvati.
Fourth Temple

Dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th
Tirthankara of the Jains.
● Believed to be latest amongst all.
● Originated in &th Century, near about 100 years
after construction of earlier three.
