Kachikawawa
Caprices
For Solo Violin
Composed by:
Spencer (Reddit @Pagalingling)
Karolyn (Reddit @i_ruin2ndviolinsears)
April (Reddit @evatheEstring, Insta @theviolinbunny)
Additional Credits:
Jocelyn, who’s all the way from Boston :D (Insta @j.ocelynw and
@jw.violin)
Please don’t judge, we wrote these caprices in two weeks’ time :/
About
Spencer plays the piano and the oboe; he is also a genuine composer.
Spencer does not think that he himself is a prodigy. However, Karolyn
and April think so.
The first time Spencer touched an English horn was in June 2018.
Spencer has never played the English horn.
Karolyn plays the flute and the piano; she does not actually compose
but is good at it anyway.
Karolyn does not think that she herself is a prodigy. However, Spencer
and April think so.
The first time Karolyn touched a piccolo was never. She’s forever loyal
to the flute… or is she?
April plays the violin. She doesn’t play multiple instruments and doesn’t
actually compose either, unlike her prodigy friends.
April does not think that she herself is a prodigy, and nobody else thinks
so either.
The first time April touched a viola was in November 2018.
April has never played the viola.
Sadly, Karolyn could not make it to a Twoset show. She is very
disappointed that she has a prodigy symphony rehearsal and
performance and a prodigy piano recital on that day, but at least she is
getting her 40 hours of playing/practice in. Her friends have brought her
scale book for Brett and Eddy themselves to sign.

Performance Notes:
This caprice is meant to be played sacrilegiously.
The performer is to maintain an awkward smile throughout the piece, while maintaining a speed of 15
notes a second. Each tremolo must uncleanly shift to the next note (except for when no gliss is notated),
and most notes should be played extremely out of tune. In addition, the pizzicatto should be unclean and
must follow any rhythm other than the one notated. The dymamic markings on this piece are useless, as
they are not to be considered during the performance of this piece; thus, the player must perform the piece
in a way such that the dynamics are not able to be determined (as well as the articulation except for the
speed of the piece). This piece should be completed in under a minute. As an additional precaution, any
of the notes notated should not be played, and so the player must play notes within one whole step of the
written (not including the note itself).
Optimally, this piece should be played on a 1.5 million dollar electric 5-string violin/viola, and the last
7 measures would be ommitted, as they are used on an acoustic violin to imitate a mistake by the ampli-
fier on the electric violin to attempt to give it more reverb.
Remember, "If you can play it slowly, you can play it quickly."
- Ben Lee, world record holder for fastest violin playing

Caprice No. 3: Shooting Star 5
Performance Notes:
During this caprice, the player must play the repeated passage at least 32 times to achieve the level
of meme music that it is. Furthermore, the performer must dance around the performing area (if
possible) similar to the playing of Lindsey Stirling. This piece is to imitate the shooting star meme.
Note: Piece based upon Bag Raiders' Shooting Star. No copyright infringement intended.

Performance Notes:
This caprice is meant to weld together the tunes of Sandstorm by Darude and Sad Romance by Ji Pyeong-
Keyon. The tempos should realistically be almost the same as in the real piece, and should be quite similar.
Thus, the player should play this as to reflect the memes that these two represent.
Note: No Copyright Infringement Intended.

Performance Notes:
This caprice, more commonly known to the public as the Kachikawawa Rhapsody, was first world
premiered by violinist Eddy Chen. His interpretation shows the Píu Andante approach, although either
approach is acceptable (by the composer). The odd time signatures should flow seemlessly, (showcased
by Eddy's recording), and the listener should not be able to tell any of the pitches that are being played,
in other words the intonation must be off on every single note of the piece. Furthermore, the segments of
fast 16ths should be played all the same length (regardless of tempo marking) and the transitions from
pizzicato to arco and vice versa should be made instantaneously. At the end, the listener should be unsure
that the piece is over, as strenuous breaks should be taken at random times during the piece. As this piece
is a rhapsody, the piece should be performed abrubtly as the many motifs are not repeated and only
shown once and are shown quite quickly. All best luck to the performer, because they will need it. Menopizz.Mosso

Performance Notes:
To Honor the Viola King, in order for the performance to take place, the violin must be tuned down to
resemble the pitches of a viola (if not harming the violin in any way). Alternatively, the impossible notes
may be moved up an octave. Everything must sound like the answer to the question "What did the
violinist/violist/cellist say to the violist?", giving the caprice its other known name. In addition, the piece
must be played in baroque tuning (A = 415 Hz), and the bowhold must be as such.

Performance Notes;
This caprice should be played to imitate a recorder. A soprano recorder. As such, play these harmonics
as LOUD as possible in order to kill the ears of everyone around you. The glissandos may switch
out of harmonics for a short time, that is acceptable, but these cracks must sound awful. This piece

Performance Notes:
These are tasks similar to those found when musicians have a tacit al fine in orchestra. However, in this
caprice, the challenging part is keeping time while you perform these various actions precisely and
completely. Make sure to buy a Practice Journal before the performance of this piece.

Caprice No. 20: To be a world-class soloist
Tempo de Valse h. = 60
Performance Notes:
This piece should be played as if the performer is imitating a world-class soloist, meaning move your

member, while making intense emotional movements. Homage to Shostakovich :)

trying to fall asleep, asleep, in your dreams, on a date, mental practicing at the same time, at school,
taking a test, cheating with perfect pitch, doing Ling Ling challenges perfectly, texting (with his feet),
playing another violin, playing a viola, reading, getting twoset tickets, buying twoset merch,
in line for a twoset show, at a twoset show, in line for twoset signing, meeting twoset
playing all the orchestral instrument simultaneously, taking a pint during his non-existent tacet
playing 4 chickens at the same time while autotuning them in real time
recording himself playing this in 37 ways at the same time, Editing a chromatic scale, translating
captions for a twoset video, singing another line at the same time, singing a whole chorus at the same
time, playing all these caprices simultaneously,
. advising twoset on new content, and being ling ling.

Caprice No. 1
What happened to the B flats in the last variation?
Caprice No. 2
Molto Accel + 15 Notes a second = Over 15 Notes a second → Beating the world
record for fastest violin playing
Caprice No. 5
Yes. Slam the box.
Caprice No. 6
Look back at the video; it’s the same music (hopefully). Spencer may or may not
have the world’s greatest ears.

Caprice No. 14
Hail the Viola King! Viola King! Viola King! Hip Hip Viola! Hip Hip Viola!
Caprice No. 17
Notice where exactly this is printed…
Caprice No. 20
Hmm… what piece is that again?
Caprice No. 21
It’s been deliberately made easy. Until it isn’t.
Caprice No. 23
Yes. The staccato is intentional.
Caprice No. 27
Remember that guy?
Caprice No. 33
But LING LING can play 12 notes at the same time! You must watch Amadeus if you
have not already.

Comments section vibes?
Caprice No. 40
This is self-explanatory.
Measure Numbers
They do not reset throughout the caprices… that implies...
And now for some self-promotion:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPvQYb5cJho is one of Spencer’s
best recordings, especially for the second half.
Follow @theviolinbunny on instagram for some cringy, out of tune violin
videos. Sometimes she draws or tells stories.
Thanks again to Eddy and Brett for inspiring these caprices, along with
all the co-composers (including Karolyn who couldn’t make it to the
concert). We love you guys!
