There are typically 6 possible degrees of freedom based on the node or structures

ability to translate ( in x,y and z) as well as rotate (about x,y and z).

DOF means opportunity or scope available for the body so that it can able to displace.
The body can displace in ( x ,y ,z , xy, xz, yz,). So maximum DOF in any structural system
is 6 number.

Well, a typical door with a door knob has two degrees of freedom. One is the angle of
the door with respect to the door jamb. The second is the angle of rotation of the door
knob.
If you are just walking around on some streets, you have two degrees of freedom. If you
find, leaning against a wall, a ladder that you can climb, you acquire a third degree of
freedom, namely, your height above the ground

DOF of a structure means in how many directions a structure or an element can

generate displacement. imagine a train driving on the rail, which can move only in the
one direction the rail leads to. so under some condition we can see this train has only
one dof. the number of dof will affect the mode number and mode type of a structure.
because every possible mode has to fit in with the moving direction(dof)of each
point/part/element of the structure, so that we can see if some structure gets more dof,
it will exhibit more complicated modes.
