Distress transmitting procedure:
Distress transmitting procedure to be used only if immediate assistance is required. Following are the
methods to transmit distress

1. ALARM SIGNALS:
Emergency signals or alarms on a ship are installed all over the vessel's various systems and
machinery to notify the crew about a dangerous situation that can arise due to different types of
emergencies on board ship.
2. Send the following distress call:
the distress signal "MAYDAY" spoken three times;
the words "THIS IS";
the call sign of the aircraft in distress spoken three times.
Example:MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY.
3. Then send the distress message:
The distress message shall follow the distress call as soon as possible.The distress message
should include as many as possible of the following elements spoken distinctly and, if possible,
in the following order:
the distress signal "MAYDAY";
the call sign of the station in distress (once);
the nature of the distress condition and kind of assistance required (i.e. what has happened);
the intentions of the person in command;

Examples of distress procedure:


1. Where possible transmit alarm signal or The distress call Mayday may be used only if the
boat is threatened by grave andimminent danger – for example, sinking or on fire – and
immediate assistance is required. This distress call has absolute priority over all other
transmissions and may be transmitted only on the authority of the skipper or the person
responsible for the safety of your vessel. A Mayday call on one of the distress frequencies
will attract the attention of land stations and other vessels in your area. Stay calm, explain
the problem and give position and distress information clearly.
2. Where possible transmit alarm signal spoken by words MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY THIS IS
(Name of the vessel in distress spoken 3 times) CALL SIGN and/or MMSI MAYDAY Name of
the vessel, CALL SIGN and /or MMSI of the vessel in distress, POSITION (Vessel's position) AT
(Time of vessel's position in UTC) (Type of accident) IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE REQUIRED
(Number of people onboard - Other information that could help SAR services such as
weather conditions, activated EPIRB etc.)OVER
3. If urgent message transmit on ship then use the urgency signal The urgency signal is "PAN
PAN" spoken three times. It should be used at the beginning of the first urgency
communication. The urgency signal and the urgency message may be addressed to all
stations or to a specific station.
