CYBER ATTACKS

Presented by Jariel Rodriguez, Marc Cruz, & Terrence

>WHAT IS A CYBER ATTACK?

A cyber attack is a deliberate exploitation of computer systems and networks using malicious software
A.K.A malware. These attacks enable cyber crimes such as information theft, fraud, and ransomware
schemes. According to the University of Maryland, a cyber attack occurs every 39 seconds. Many attacks
are motivated by ransom (53% according to Cisco) and other motives could be seen as “hacktivism”.
>TYPES OF CYBER ATTACKS
There are many types of attacks each with different ways to infect a
person’s computer network or system. Things like botnet, stuxnet, and
Ransomware are three common cyber attacks that occur throughout
the world.

● Botnet: A botnet is a collection of internet connected devices infected

with malware that allow hackers to control them.

● Stuxnet: Stuxnet is a type of computer worm created in the mid-2000s.

Stuxnet targets Programmable Logic Controllers

● Ransomware: Ransomware is a type of malware that threatens to

publish the victim’s data or block access to it unless a ransom is paid.
>IRAN CYBER ATTACKS
During the course we discussed the uranium spinners in Iran and the Stuxnet attack that targeted the computers
that controlled the spinners by infected the PLC tied to the spinners which ruined their uranium batches for a
good while. This whole attack and Iran making uranium for nuclear weapons lead to the Nuclear Deal (2015).

In recent news, the United States and Iran have had a heated feud but
after the death of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani Iran decided to
retaliate with cyber attacks and no longer agreed to follow the Nuclear
Deal and committed multiple cyber attacks against the US.
>INFAMOUS CYBER ATTACKS
The Internet that we used today was invented in 1983 and the first cyber
attack was used in 1989. Since then, there have been hundreds, if not
thousands of cyber attacks since then. Here are but a few.

● Playstation Network (2011): Infamous DDoS attack by the

hacktivist group Anonymous. This attack leaked the personal
data of over 77 million users.

● ILOVEYOU (2000): One of the first major cyber attacks in history,

this worm spread via email, infecting numerous files on the victim’s
computer and sending itself to all the victim’s recipients.

● The Olympic Destroyer (2018): A malicious network worm which

compromised the various systems being used during Olympics,
stealing passwords of infected machines, and purging all files it
could get its hands on.
>HOW TO PREVENT/DEFEND AGAINST ATTACKS
There are many precautions you can take to protect your devices. Here are 4 ways you can keep
yourself safe online

● Awareness: It pays to be knowledgeable. Have an eye out for eagerness/sketchiness on website

pages, check your browser’s search box for the lock icon, see if the website is http or https.

● Antivirus: Standard defensive measure utilized by most users. Installing an

Antivirus -free or paid- helps protect your computer and potentially
other future users.

● Bot Detection Algorithm: More advanced measure taken by many website

hosts. The algorithm detects if there is a sudden flood of users and quickly
blacklists (blocks) the IP address of the source.

● Locking PC ports: One of the more extreme precautions to take, often used
by the government. By disabling the ports on your computer you prevent any
hackers from gaining any physical access to your device.
>INTERESTING FACTS

1. 93% of attacks can be avoided

2. Only 38% of organizations are

prepared for a cyber attack

3. Identify Theft has affected over 60

million people

4. 75% of the healthcare industry over

the last year have been infected with
malware
