The inhibitory activity of Allium vegetables extracts against mould have been reported by

numerous authors according to Irkin and Korukluoglu (2007). Allium cepa or onion ethyl alcohol

extract was effective in terms of its inhibitory activity on A. niger but inhibitory activities were

not observed in its aqueous form. In line with this, the aqueous extract of onion had activity only

against T. rubrum compared to A. niger in the study of Ikegbunam, Ukamaka & Emmanuel

(2016). Furthermore, onion oil possesses antibacterial activity against food pathogens and

spoilage bacteria (Vazquez-Armenta, Cruz-Valenzuela & Ayala-Zavala, 2016).

Aspergillus niger has bad effects on plants, animals, and humans. Hocking (as cited in Nair,

1985; Snowdon, 1990) described Aspergillus niger as the most common Aspergillus species

responsible for post-harvest decay of fresh fruit, including grapes, in which it is a principal agent

of Aspergillus bunch rot. In addition, it could grow in temperatures with a minimum of 6–8 °C

and a maximum of 45–47 °C (Hocking, 2009). According to Ikegbunam et al., (2016) though

disease is rare, massive inhalation of A. niger spores can cause allergic reactions such as asthma

and pneumonitis.
