Class 9 - Maths
Chapter 16 - Quadratic Equations
Duration: 40 minutes December 9, 2018

This test contains 2 pages (including this page) and 6 questions. Total: 20 marks.

Full marks are not necessarily awarded for a correct answer with no working. Answers must be
supported by working and/or explanations. In particular, solutions found from a graphic display
calculator should be supported by suitable working, e.g. if graphs are used to find a solution, you
should sketch these as part of your answer. Where an answer is incorrect, some marks may be
given for a correct method, provided this is shown by written working. You are therefore advised
to show all working.

1. Solve for x : (4)

(a) 3x2 = −12 (c) 1 − 3x2 = 10

(b) (2x + 5)2 = 0 (d) 4(2x − 1)2 = 8

2. Solve for x using the Null Factor law: (2)

(a) 8(3x + 1)2 = 0 (b) −6(x − 5)(3x + 2)

3. Solve for x by factorisation: (2)

x−2 6+x (b) 6x2 = 17x + 14
(a) =
x 2

4. Simplify the equation and then solve for x by factorisation: (4)

(a) x(x + 2) + 3(x − 1) = 11 (b) (x + 2)(x − 7) = 8x

5. Use completing the square to solve: (4)

(a) 3x2 − 9x + 11 = 0 (b) 5x2 + 10x + 1 = 0

6. Use the quadratic formula to solve: (4)

from the council plans that its area is 16, 800 m2 . He needs 400 metres of fencing for
