Name: _____________________________ Grade and section: __________ Score: _______

DIRECTION: Answer the following problems honestly. Use a separate sheet of paper
for your answer and present a detailed solution for credit.

1. Select the quantity that contains the greater number of atoms in each of the following
pairs of substances. (5 POINTS)
a.) Avogadro’s number of C atoms or 0.750 mole of Al atoms.
b.) 6.18 x 1023 N atoms or 2 moles of P atoms.

2. How many moles are present in a sample of each of the following substances if each
sample weighs 5.00 g? (10 POINTS)
a.) U atoms b.) B 4H10 molecules

3.) Vitamin C has the formula C6H8O6. Calculate the number of vitamin C molecules
present in a 0.250 grams tablet of pure vitamin C. (10 POINTS)

4.) Many people use a solution of sodium phosphate (Na 3PO4 – commonly called TSP),
to clean walls before putting up wallpaper. Calculate the percent composition of sodium
phosphate. (5 POINTS)

5.) One compound of mercury with a molar mass of 519 g/mol contains 77.26% Hg,
9.25% C, 1.17% H and the rest was oxygen. Calculate the empirical and molecular
formulas, arranging the symbols in the order HgCHO. (10 POINTS)

6.) A compound used in photography is called potassium persulfate. A 0.8162 gram

sample of the compound was analyzed and found to contain 0.2361 grams of
potassium, 0.3865 grams of oxygen and the rest was sulfur. Arranging the symbols in
the order KSO.
(10 POINTS)
a) Find the mass of sulfur in the sample.
b) Determine the empirical formula for this compound.
c) The molar mass of this compound is 270.4 g/mol. Determine the molecular
formula.

7.) Cisplatin is an anti-cancer chemotherapy drug that is used to treat cancerous

tumors. It has a chemical formula of PtCl 2(NH3)2. Calculate the percent composition of
each element. (5 POINTS)
8.) How does the law of conservation of matter apply to chemical reactions? How is the
balancing of chemical equations important (a) in the field of medicine and (b) as a
STEM student? (5 POINTS)
9. Balance the following chemical equations.
a.) ___FeS2 + ___O2  ___Fe2O3 + ____SO2
b.) ___Si2H₂ +___O2  ___SiO2 + ____H2O
c.) ___KClO3  ____KClO4 + ____ KCl
d.) ___P4O10  ____ H2O + ____ H3PO4
e.) ___H3AsO4  ___As2O5 + ___H2O
f.) ___ Ca + ____AlCl3  ___CaCl2 + ___Al
g.) ____ Ca₂ (PO4)2 + ____SiO2  ____P4O10 + ____CaSiO3
h.) ___C10H16 + ___ Cl  ___C + ___HCl
i.) ___Ag2S + ____KCN  ____KAg(CN)2 + ____K2S
j.) ___I + ____HNO3  ____HIO3+ ____NO2 + ____H2O
