A reflection on Taylor Swift’s influence

Everyone knows the es-
teemed Taylor Swift; if you don’t it’s
obvious you’ve been living under a
rock. In 2006 she released her first al-
bum self-titled ‘Taylor Swift’ with her
first song hit single ‘Tim McGraw’.
From that first debut, she’s been
writing beautiful allegorical music for
millions of fans young and old around
the world. Recently, on November 10,
2017, Swift released her sixth album
‘Reputation’ for the public. Overnight,
the album became a sensation selling
more than 2 million copies and the
music video for ‘Look what you made
me do’ gained over 13 million views.
Of course, we cannot simply
forget her phenomenal Reputation
stadium tour, regardless of whether
you are a swiftie or not. Fans flocked
to the stadiums nationwide to see
Swift perform, and this tour was stated
to be the highest grossing tour she’s
ever produced. She had even won four
American Music Awards, one of them
being tour of the year.
However, fame aside, I don’t
think that is her music is the main rea-
son Swift recieves immense adulation.
Her altruistic and generous spirit drive
her fans crazy with excitement, espe-
cially when invited to secret sessions
or Meet-n-greets. Her donations to
hundreds of charities, including Red
Cross, ALS Association and AMC
Lifting Lives, have made an impact
on fans revealing her character as gen-
erous and amiable. The singer herself
even stated that ‘Reputation’ was for
the fans and expressing her inner self
and who she’s come to be through-
cheerful deep songs and speeches.

Exploring the origins of the holiday of love

Valentine’s day is never consid-
ered a bloody holiday. It is well-loved
across the world. People flood the stores,
grasping at teddy bears and cheap choco-
lates which never taste that good anyway.
It’s cheesy and often not taken seriously.
However, the holiday is a still remind-
er of love and hope. However, it didn’t
always represent those stunning qualities.
Valentine’s day has existed since
AD 270, when the ancient Roman empire
still existed. It comes from a story about
St. Valentine, a martyr and a saint. It is
suspected that he was a priest in third
century Rome. Claudius II was emperor,
and he had declared that only single men
could serve in the army. Claudius figured
they would be filled with temptation, and
outlawed marriage for young men serv-
ing in the army. Valentine knew this was
an unjust rule and continued to perform
secret ceremonies for lovers. Some ver-
sions of the story say that Valentine actu-
ally attempted to save Christian soldiers
from being unjustly enlisted in the army.
He did this by marrying them off, which
made them exempt. Once the emperor
found out, he ordered Valentine to be
beaten with clubs and have his head cut
off. On February 14th, he was dragged

out into the public, and executed. He was
eventually named a saint after his death.
Another legend says that when
Valentine was imprisoned, he fell in love
with the jailor’s daughter, who visited
him in his cell. Some tales say that he
cured her from her blindness. In any case,
they were deep in love with each other. It
is said that he wrote her a letter before he
died and signed it: “from your Valentine.”
We still use this phrase today. The after-
math of his death was remarkable. People
were so inspired by his commitment to
love, that they began a new tradition.
It consisted of drawing two names out
of a hat and letting the two people get
to know each other over the course of
a year. This often led to love, and con-
sequently marriage (much like a blind
date).
However, Valentine’s day wasn’t
just based off a saint. It also came from
an ancient pagan tradition called Lu-
percalia. This festival was celebrated
in Rome and Italy and represented love
and fertility. According to legend, King
Amulius ordered his two nephews (Ro-
mulus and Remus) to be thrown into the
Tiber River. He wanted them to drown,
as revenge for their mother’s broken vow
of celibacy. However, a servant knew the
boys wouldn’t survive, and sent them
down the river in a basket instead. The
river gods swept them downstream, until
they eventually landed among the branch-
es of a fig tree. Later, they were found
by a she-wolf who took them to her den
and cared for them. Eventually, they
were adopted by a shepherd and his wife,
where they learned traditional trades. The
boys returned, and rightfully killed their
murderous uncle. Finally, they went back
to the cave they were raised in and named
it Lupercus. The boys later grew up to be
the founders of Rome.

From this story, the festival of
Lupercalia was born. The event calls
for the sacrifice of goats and dogs in
order to honor the she-wolf, and the
god of fertility, Lupercus. The killings
were performed by a group of Roman
priests, called Luperci. After the ritual,
everyone participated in a great feast to
celebrate the tradition. This was followed
by various men running around, whip-
ping women in the name of fertility. The
symbolism of this is often disputed, but
generally unknown. This seems strange,
but often the women accepted it, or
held out their hands willingly, in hopes
to conceive. Lupercalia has had many
influences on the modern holiday. Some
Christians refuse to celebrate Valentine’s
day, based on its pagan roots. Today,
we have adapted many aspects of these
traditions into our celebrations. We take
the colors red and white from Lupercalia,
as symbols of love and hope. Despite its
gruesome history, Valentine’s day still
values and celebrates young passion and
commitment.

My personal experiences of
trekking through natural woodlands,
especially the one outside my front
door have brought unmeasurable peace
and tranquility to my life. Above all,
these experiences have taught me to
revere the natural world and understand
human beings are intertwined with the
natural world and it is necessary for us
to live in symbiosis with nature. In this
article I want to illustrate the environ-
mental damage that I witnessed take
place around my home. To illustrate
this, I first showcase a vibrant ecosys-
tem, and overtime, state the devastation
executed detrimental farming practices.
Thus, without further ado, here is the
beauty of nature before being driven to
the brink.
In winter months, the wily
coyote or red fox could be spotted by a
keen eye preforming acrobatic tricks to
procure a rodent of some specie. It al-
ways was a perplexing sight to follow a
coyote’s tracks that suddenly halted and
turned into a gaping hole in the blanket
of white, possible uncovering the hints
of spring grass. A common occurrence
was venturing upon a deer or moose.
Annoyed, they would awaken in great
haste by an onlooker, stand up in a huff,
and display their deep shiny coat and
rack, characterized by moss drooping
from their spindly bodies. The frost
coated evergreens were emblems of the
seemingly mystical woodland, conceal-
ing life within its parameters.
Near the end of winter, one
could hear soft whistling echoing
through the dense woodland, signaling
the beginning of a new season. One of
burgeoning life. Spring. It always was
a rejuvenating feeling to walk down
a flowered path, covered with vibrant
colors and redolent smells. Onlookers
could glimpse wildlife with their reju-
venated coats, light and shiny.
The babbling brook that carved out a
section of the woodland brought mul-
titudes of amphibians that serenaded
the night until pink mist coated the
sky. Meadow larks, flickers, red-wing
black birds, and swallows also graced
the skies. Eventually, the days became
hazy, characterizing summer. Some of
the flowers wilted off, and individuals
sought solace from the burning sun in
shaded areas. Finally, the air became
crisp and the trees turned different
shades. Animals of all species were pre-
paring for Jack Frost’s arrival by eating
all the calories necessary for hiberna-
tion or storing food away in carved out
logs or trees. This beautiful ecosystem
seemed immortal from civilization’s
touch, but this was untrue.
The neighboring farming orga-
nizations took their toll on the natural
environment by the harsh pesticides
and chemicals. The landscape became
increasingly eroded, the natural creeks
became contaminated with dissolved
solids from the pesticides, and the
abundance of wildlife become increas-
ingly scarce. Our family can’t even
consume the water because over time,
the pesticides sunk under the ground
and contaminated our well. I now walk
through the forest trying to glimpse
the once prevalent species of birds
that graced the sky and individual ears
along with the amphibians. I have not
glimpsed the Wiley coyote running
through the fields. They are reduced
to living in utter concealment out of
unwarranted individual fear of them,
resorting to their shotguns.
It is more than a sad commen-
tary to witness this natural destruction
but look to the bigger picture. This is
not the only example by any stretch. I
ask you, what world we would live in if
we continue to ignore the consequences
of environmental destruction and global
warming? Human beings can’t ignore
that we are part of the natural world and
if we destroy it, we destroy ourselves.
The Year of the Pig

Anyone that has glanced at the cheery
posters hanging around the front entrance of the
Upper School is aware that the Chinese Zodiac’s
Year of the Pig is coming up. Because the Chi-
nese zodiac is governed by the lunar calendar,
the Year of the Pig does not start until February
5th and lasts until January 24, 2020. On the
night of February 4th, many families will gather
to celebrate the coming of a new year and the
good luck it symbolizes. This celebration is one
of great importance and it is one Saint George’s
even celebrates with student performances, food,
red envelopes. What many do not know,
and
however, is the story behind the Chinese Zodiac
that tells how each animal gained their place in
this twelve year cycle.
The story begins with the Jade Emper-
or who declared he would name years of the
calendar after twelve animals if they crossed a
wide and treacherous river. The Rat crossed first,
after devising a scheme to ride on the Ox’s head.
Then came the Ox, Tiger Rabbit, Dragon, Snake,
Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and finally,
at the very end, the Pig.
The legend varies on why the Pig ar-
rived last, though most agree it was because he
overslept or became distracted on his journey by
food. Regardless, the Pig was able to arrive and
finish the race in time to take twelfth place.

So, why do we celebrate a year for an
animal that took last place, especially one that,
for many, symbolizes gluttony and laziness? Be-
cause it is these attributes that tie the pig to their
association with wealth. The year of the Pig is
one filled with good luck and prosperity. Pigs
also symbolize honesty, generosity, and truthful-
ness, traits that are both supposedly possessed
by those who are born in the years associated
with the Pig, but also traits that perhaps should
be exemplified in the coming year. Regardless of
what zodiac animal you are, the Year of the Pig
is a time for celebration and spending time with
loved ones, so go find someone you love and tell
them you love them (bonus points if you find
someone born in the Year of the Pig!)

Jr. mean to you?” Two middle school students were selected as winners this year and responded to the prompt in the below essays.

In the words of Enrique Mo-
rones, “He’s the essence of what we
should all be striving for; one world.” I
could not agree more with this statement
and this is what Martin Luther King
Junior means to me. He was the lucky
penny found in the hands of the poor.
He was the embodiment of the hope and
need in his followers’ eyes. He was the
voice for those who could not speak. He
set his mind on something that others
could not bring themselves to set their
minds on. He found his dream and ran
with it, bringing millions with him on
this unforgettable and life-changing jour-
ney.
These monumental words were
once uttered across the nation, burning
itself into our minds, our everyday lives,
and the memory of Martin Luther King
Junior himself: “I have a dream that
my four children will one day live in
a nation where they will not be judged
by the color of their skin, but by the
content of their character.” We may
all have different versions of what this
quote means to us, but to me it seems
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to
justice everywhere.”

or value of someone by their outside
appearance alone. This, to me, is the
most powerful message Martin Luther
King Junior is spreading. I admit that
when I was younger, I used to look at
someone and immediately place them in
my head without getting to know them. I
am not proud of it and I think I would be
lying if I said none of us had done so at
one point in our lives; no one is perfect.
However, now I strive to minimize my
own prejudices based in large part on
Martin Luther King’s teachings.
One thing Martin Luther King
Junior did that touched me on a deep-
er level was his confidence in loving
others. I have learned through him that
violence is never the answer to anything.
His countless peaceful acts of protest
have opened not only my eyes, but also
millions of others’, showing us that not
everything needs to be solved through
war, whether it’s a small argument or
not. “Darkness cannot drive out dark-
ness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot
drive out hate. Only love can do that.”
Another significant lesson Mar-
tin Luther King Junior preached was
to never give up. He once said, “If you
can’t fly, run. If you can’t run, walk. If
you can’t walk, crawl. But by all means,
keep moving forward.” He never gave
up once, pushing past all the obstacles
and signs that screamed at him to stop.
He would have never achieved his dream
if he had not kept moving forward, I
hope to one day, instead of stopping
at my obstacles, find any possible way
around them, even if it means I have to
learn how to fly—fly as high as Martin
Luther King Junior once did.
I aspire to be like Martin Lu-
ther King Junior in all these ways and
more. His fighting spirit, love of others,
and desire to be unprejudiced have all
made him so eye opening and inspir-
ing. I am—and always will be—in awe
of everything for which he fought and
achieved. If I lead my life with these
characteristics at twice the person I am
now, I would still be only half the person

Martin Luther King Junior
means a lot to me. If he did not pro-
test, speak, and march, I would not be
able to come to this school. I would
not even be in Spokane, Washington. I
would be back in Jackson, Mississippi
with my family of seven kids barely
holding on because of my mom being
a single parent with barely enough
money for all of us. My parents would
have been discriminated against for
adopting me, my brother Dan, and my
sister Zadie. Everyone, even Mississip-
pi, would judge and hate them for it. I
would not be able to vote when I am
eighteen. I would have to be with all
the other African Americans not being
able to put our opinions in the ballot
box. Also, without Dr. King, one of my
favorite movies, Black Panther, would
never have existed.
MLK taught me that it is OK to
be different. In our society now, many
people are judged for having differenc-
es, but Martin Luther King taught me
to embrace people’s differences. For
example, my best friend has different
color skin than me, but it does not both-
er either of us. We know we have a lot
to learn about each other because of our
different experiences. Martin Luther
King helped all of us look at the world
in a different way.
One thing that matters to me is Dr.
King’s bravery and willingness to
protest in the face of any quality and
violence. Martin Luther King Jr. got ar-
rested 29 times, stabbed twice, suffered
bomb threats, and a bombing, and faced
all kinds of violence. He did all of it so
that he could fight for what he believed
in. To me, one of the most important
things he did was participate in the
Montgomery bus boycott. Rosa Parks
and MLK were its two main leaders.
Protesting for African Americans is
something that I would enjoy doing.
There is so much joy to see so many
people like you fighting for the same
thing but for different reasons.

MLK also taught me to fight for
what I believed in. Attending protests
like that, I feel power because I know
that I am doing something to make a
difference. My family attends the MLK
march, every single year and march in
the freezing cold for hours. I grew up
learning about how powerful protests
can be. Everywhere you looked were
black people and white people march-
ing together as one. All around were
the voices of people who believed in
the same thing as my family and I did.
They walked around holding signs
with their own dreams on them. The
joy I felt was so strong and powerful
and I felt like I could never be happier.
It is such a cool thing to see because
all I can think about is how his dream
came true. Not many people who have
a dream this big ever come close to
accomplishing it, even if they were not
alive to see it. I know now that because
of him I am capable of becoming who-
ever I want.
