installations. Combining superb seaworthiness and performance, our
boats are ideal for all types of assistance, evacuation and rescue.

The boats are constructed in GRP and have a low freeboard to facilitate rescue operations. Norsafe
rescue boats are self-bailing, with ample deck space, a self-righting system and sturdy foam-filled fend-
ers. The boats are typically supplied with diesel inboard motors, with water jet and stern drive propulsion
units available. Norsafe can also supply single or multiple petrol outboard engines. Each boat can be
supplied with a specially developed davit, shock absorbing function as standard and possibilities for high
speed retrieval and motion compensation. This allows heavy weather operation from the mother ship.

All vessels are designed to provide excellent maneuverability and sea-keeping abilities in order to fulfill their
prime function: to provide an effective means of search and recovery for persons missing at sea.

Ready for operation
The Norsafe fleet of rescue boats is designed and manufactured
according to SOLAS, Classification Society and National Authority
requirements. All equipment has been approved and Wheel Marked
in accordance with the EC Marine Equipment Directive. The NORSOK
R-002 regulations are required in Norwegian waters from 2015.

The boats have hull and seating arrangements designed to reduce shocks and
maximize seaworthiness. The hulls are vacuum moulded using advanced composites.
In addition to fire retardant fibreglass, carbon fibre and Kevlar® reinforcements are used in
a sandwich construction for certain projects. Bullet resistant materials are also available.

the highest quality. Only the best craftsmanship, components and materials are used. The boats are
specially designed to operate away from the shore or mother ship for extended periods of time.

Combining superb seaworthiness, manoeuvrability and high speed,
the boats are ideal for all types of assistance, patrols and other special
applications. The layout and performance of the boats allows for wide
ranging functions, including operations in hostile areas.
Undetectable and task flexible
The boats have a low freeboard, a sprayhood specially designed for
boarding and an anti-slip deck surface. They are self-bailing, have am-
ple deck space, a self-righting system and a sturdy foam-filled fender.

Radar waves pass through fibreglass, giving the boats an inherent
stealth capability. This, combined with very little use of aluminium or
steel, helps reduce the overall radar signature.
For many users failure of the equipment is not – and cannot be – an
option. The boats operating in the “no-failure-zone” can be equipped
with a mechanical override control system for the engine electronics.
Even if all on board engine electronics are heavily damaged or should
fail completely, this system allows for the engines to be manually
and mechanically run. Further, Norsafe can provide boats with full
redundancy, where the motor, power train and all support functions
are fully isolated within the craft. This ensures a safe return for the
crew to land or to the mothership.
Approved by authorities
The boats are designed, built and equipped to comply with SOLAS
regulations or similar national regulations. Other codes and certifica-
tion modules can be supplied. All boats are specially designed and
constructed to allow for full availability, low maintenance, standby and
operation.
Following fabrication, all Norsafe boats are fully Factory Acceptance
Tested (FAT) to ensure the boat performance and on board systems are
fully functioning according to standard test procedures and the agreed
specification for the equipment. Customers are welcome to attend FAT
and sea trials at Norsafe’s factory which has easy ocean access.
Tailor made solutions
One of the advantages for Norsafe’s customers is the company’s design
flexibility, making it possible to build boats specifically intended to
meet client requirements. Since the very first deliveries of its profes-
sional boats, all the craft built by Norsafe have been equipped for spe-
cific tasks. Norsafe works closely with its customers to understand their
requirements and produce concepts suitable for the boats’ intended
purpose.
Usually inboard diesel engines are fitted - these can be driven by
waterjet, stern or surface drives. Petrol outboard motors can also
be installed if preferred. Norsafe offers single, twin or triple engine
installations. This wide range of propulsion options gives a wide
spectrum of operation - from shallow river or coastal operations
to high speed offshore use.

of 45 degrees to starboard for improved comfort and operational control. In addition, the helmsman

from a larger mother ship and capable of extended range operations.

Multi-purpose workboat platform Propulsion system

Norsafe workboats are equipped with high quality components and
built according to the customer’s individual needs. The workboat is
designed and outfitted to fulfil demands for reliability, low maintenance
costs and long-time heavy use. Offering excellent reliability, manoeu-
vrability and sea keeping abilities in heavy sea, the workboat fulfils its
primary function - performance as an effective work platform.
Norsafe’s workboat models are designed to operate away from the

mother ship for extended periods, with sufficient range and long-time
operation. A high gunwale around the boat provides a protected and
comfortable working environment for crew and passengers. The layout
of the boat enables it to perform roles as multi-purpose workboat, seis-
mic workboat, oil spill recovery, fish farming, dive support, inspection,
survey and towing duties.
Hull and deck
The workboat is fabricated with multi axial fibre mats reinforced viny-
lester and divinycell sandwich using the vacuum infusion production
method. The deck is self-bailing through the wide gate which has a
slip at the stern. A heavy duty fender protects the hull by absorbing
impacts and provides additional buoyancy. The deck has an anti-slip
surface and grab handles are fitted where necessary.
The workboat is equipped with twin inboard diesel engines and suit-
able water jets, with the following features:
• Electrical starter with two sets of independent batteries
• Fresh water engine cooling with heat exchange to seawater cooling
• Water jets with dry run capabilities, allowing the boat to run in the
davit for a period of up to 5 minutes
• Fuel tanks are located under the deck in front of the engines. Fuel
filters and shut-off/bypass valves are placed in the technical room
under the wheelhouse for easy access and maintenance
• Water jet protection in GRP, extending the aft deck area and work-
ing as a slipway
• Engines are equipped with an automatically shut off system in case
of fire which also shuts off engine ventilator fans and fuel valves
• Wet exhaust system with outlet at the transom which expels water
from the seawater engine cooling systems
• Engine room with fire alarm and an automatic / manual fire-extin-
guishing system.

Norsafe free fall lifeboats are designed for skid launched free fall. The skid
launch ensures that water entry is from a safe distance from the installation and
enables maximum forward motion. The craft can be launched during all weather
conditions and is always ready for use. The benefits are clear – 100% prepared-
ness for a safe evacuation with the shortest possible time frame from muster of
survivors to full escape from the installation.

Norsafe GES lifeboats (Gravity Escape System) have optimised design. Lifeboats
and davits are designed and manufactured according to SOLAS, Classification
Society and National Authority requirements. All equipment has been approved
and Wheel Marked in accordance with the EC Marine Equipment Directive.

Large numbers of ships and offshore installations are equipped with Norsafe free-fall lifeboats.
Our models are certified for heights up to 51 metres. Space and weight efficient davits are
specially designed for each installation and suit all onboard layouts.

Fast boarding Free-fall lifeboat davit HD system

The craft has a large watertight embarkation door in the stern and a
centre aisle throughout the full length of the boat. This ensures that the
boarding time can be kept to a minimum.
Advanced design and construction
The boats are double skinned, with foam buoyancy injected into the
space between the inner and outer elements. The boats also have
dedicated buoyancy tanks. This means that the boats are unsinkable,
even if damaged or in a fully flooded condition. The craft has a positive
stability up to 180º degrees and is self-righting both in intact and
flooded condition. The steering rudder nozzle has been specially
designed to give maximum thrust from the propeller. The lifeboat

system is robust and can easily withstand the powerful winds and
high waves associated with extreme weather conditions.

The Norsafe HD davit system is especially designed for safe and
efficient launching and retrieval of free fall lifeboats. The davit system
is designed for long time operation in harsh marine and offshore
environments. The davit system is designed to fulfil all requirements
as given in SOLAS.
The system provides the following functions:
• Free-fall launch of the fully loaded lifeboat
• Free-fall launch of fully loaded lifeboat with 20° list and 10° trim,
completely independent of any power supply
• Controlled launch of the fully loaded lifeboat (secondary launching)
• Recovery of the boat including crew of 3 persons (the system can
also be designed for recovery of a fully laden boat.)
New regulations applicable from 2015: DNV-OS-E406
The DNV-OS-E406 regulations are required for Norwegian waters from

Norsafe’s totally enclosed lifeboats (TELBs) are conventional lifeboats used all over
the world – on ships and offshore installations. The largest TELB has a capacity of 136
persons and is one of the largest on the market. The smaller boats with a length less than

Norsafe TELBs are designed and manufactured according to SOLAS, Classification Society
and National Authority requirements. All equipment has been approved and Wheel Marked
in accordance with the EC Marine Equipment Directive.

Safe in a totally enclosed shell
The boats are double skinned, with foam buoyancy injected into the
space between the inner and outer elements. The boats also have
dedicated buoyancy tanks. This means that the boats are unsinkable,
even if damaged and in a fully flooded condition. The craft has a
positive stability up to 180º and is self-righting, both when intact and in
a flooded condition. The steering rudder nozzle has been specially
designed to give maximum thrust from the propeller. The lifeboat
system is robust and can easily withstand the powerful winds and high
waves associated with extreme weather conditions.
The boat is equipped with on-load lifting hooks which are controlled
from a release handle mounted at the steering position. Hooks will
release simultaneously when the craft is fully waterborne. All Norsafe
conventional lifeboats can be delivered with Norsafe’s new TOR MK2
release system.
Fire protecting system
The fire protecting spray system pump takes sea water from the lowest
possible location under the boat. The spray system provides water over
the entire surface of the craft (1200 l/min). The compressed air system

has a sufficient capacity to provide air for a minimum of 10 minutes.
The over pressure inside the craft prevents the intake of toxic fumes or
gas. Provisions have been made to recharge the air system from the
ship’s compressed air system.
Fire test
When Norsafe carried out a fire test in cooperation with the Norwegian
technical laboratory, SINTEF, a lifeboat was placed inside an oil boom,
filled with 4,000 litres of kerosene in a 10 cm thick layer on the water.
The kerosene was lit, so that the boat was completely enclosed in
flames for 11½ minutes. SINTEF measured temperatures up to
1,200°C within 10cm from the lifeboat hull. Inside the boat, the
temperature was measured at 27°C and the air quality inside was
normal during the entire test. The boats can withstand these
temperatures because of the deluge system, covering the entire boat
surface in seawater, in combination with fire retardant glassfibre
reinforced polyester construction. Air bottles supply both the engine
and passengers with fresh air for a minimum of 10 minutes.

Norsafe davit systems are specially designed for the launch and recovery of Norsafe
lifeboats and rescue boats. These davits are intended for long term, reliable operations in
harsh marine and offshore environments and fulfil all requirements as given in SOLAS.

Norsafe supplies davit systems which are custom designed for davits as usual for ships. Norsafe also provides for compact and other
different installations. Norsafe also supplies cranes for launching unique installations where the davit dimensions are critical to
smaller rescue boats and liferafts. the ship design.

Norsafe HD davit
Norsafe HD davit system is specially designed for the launch
and retrieval of Norsafe GES free fall lifeboats.
The davit configuration can either be deck mounted when installed
on a vessel, or a self-supporting cantilever solution as is required for

offshore platforms. All equipment is designed and installed to provide
good maintenance access and minimal noise and vibrations.
The system provides the following functions:
• Free-fall launch of the fully loaded lifeboat
• Free-fall launch of fully loaded lifeboat with 20° list and 10°
trim, completely independent of any power supply
• Controlled launch of the fully loaded lifeboat (secondary launching)
• Recovery of the boat including crew of 3 persons. The system
can also be specified to allow recovery of a fully laden boat.
Norsafe conventional davits
Norsafe has a wide range of davits for conventional lifeboats, both
for ships and offshore installations. They are specifically designed for
safe and efficient launch and retrieval of partially and totally enclosed
lifeboats. The system provides an efficient lowering of the fully loaded
lifeboat, in both normal and dead ship conditions. Norsafe offers fixed
cantilever davits typical for offshore platforms and pivoting
Norsafe davits are intended for long term exposure to marine
and offshore environments. The davits are designed to achieve
optimum performance in terms of safety and reliability. They are
designed to minimise noise and vibration emissions and to provide
straightforward service access.
Norsafe NDA davits
Norsafe A-frame luffing davits are designed for the launch and retrieval
of rescue boats, daughtercraft and professional boats. It is intended for
long term, reliable operation in marine and offshore environments.
The system provides:
• Hoisting of the rescue boat in maximum load condition
by electric/hydraulic motor.
• Gravity lowering of the loaded rescue boat independent
of external power supply.
• Retrieval of the fully loaded rescue boat (power on board)
• Retrieval of the fully loaded rescue boat manually.
The davit systems are designed and manufactured according to

NORSAFE – lifeboat builder since 1903
Norsafe AS, earlier known as Jørgensen & Vik AS,
is one of the oldest boat builders in Norway and the
world. The company has been manufacturing wooden
boats since its inception in 1903. One of the founders
of Jørgensen & Vik, Mr Morten Smith-Petersen also
began the DNV (Det Norske Veritas) organisation in
1864. Since 1958 fibreglass has been used as the
building material, firstly for open boats, and later for
fully enclosed lifeboats as well as free-fall boats and
rescue boats.
Under new management since 1986, Jørgensen &
Vik AS relocated its operations in south Norway from
Grimstad to Arendal in 1990. Today the company has
three large factories in that area. Due to global expan-
sion a new company name was established in 1992,
“Norsafe AS”. Since being founded in 1903, Norsafe
has supplied more than 20,000 lifeboats to the global
ship and offshore market.

Commissioning
It is necessary that marine life-saving systems
are verified to be working according to design
requirements before beginning full time operation.
Norsafe engineers are onboard each and every instal-
lation to ensure that start up procedures are correctly
completed, before supporting the client with supervi-
sion of onboard testing in the presence of flag nation
or class inspectors.

environmental controlled moulding shop and assembly workshop are

Norsafe Årsnes AS
Norsafe Årsnes is the group’s dedicated centre for advanced
manufacturing of complex launching equipment for the offshore
market. Since 2007, Norsafe Årsnes has delivered some of the biggest
freefall davits in the world. Based in a 50.000m² former shipyard,
Norsafe Årsnes is also establishing a R&D division for composite
materials and advanced offshore design. Further, the company provides
a service unit for the North Sea and Norway’s Atlantic coast area.
Norsafe Hellas SA
Norsafe Hellas SA, (formerly Watercraft Hellas SA) was founded in 1974.
Davit production, boat production and administrative offices operate in
the Thiva Industrial Area, 80 km north of Athens and Piraeus port. The
company was acquired during 2006 by Norsafe AS.
This facility provides Norsafe with a key location in the Mediterranean
area, with a fully owned factory and service hub. The company has
experienced strong growth over all these years of operation and in 2009
the capacity has increased to 150 boats and 100 davits. Watercraft
employs 60 specialists in manufacturing lifesaving equipment. Norsafe
Watercraft Hellas have a range of products including
conventional and open ifeboats, free fall lifeboats, rescue and fast
rescue boats. The company can also supply specialised products such as
patrol boats, pilot boats, landing craft and ship tenders. There is a wide
range of davits or release systems to suit all boats.

platforms every year. A vital part of the decision to select Norsafe equipment is the
world wide support available for the equipment through out its total life cycle.
Service and after sales
Norsafe has concentrated its efforts to provide an effective service
network which meets customer expectations. Norsafe currently has
more than 50 authorised service stations worldwide. Norsafe’s team
operating from the main service hubs and the supporting network
of service stations provide spare parts, full repair facilities and undertake
periodic maintenance (annual and 5 year inspection) required according
to SOLAS.
As part of Norsafe’s overall service provision to customers, Norsafe
offers operation and maintenance training, on site or at our training
facilities in Norway.
Refurbishment of existing equipment is undertaken at our main service
hubs in Norway, Greece, China, Singapore, Mexico and USA.
Our goal is to provide the operators of Norsafe equipment the training
and maintenance necessary to maintain long term equipment safety.
Customer service
Norsafe Customer Service Centre is at the main company headquarters
in Norway. It has a key role in supporting Norsafe’s world wide service
activity and operates as a major service hub. The Customer Service
Centre provides:

• Scheduling and job allocation of service engineers from service

Norsafe has a team of qualified service engineers available to travel same day to undertake
maintenance or repair of our equipment. These are from our main service hubs and service partners,
co-ordinated from the Customer Service Centre in Norway.

Norsafe provides a fully comprehensive spare parts and after sales service to support all crafts and
davits in operation on ships and offshore installations world wide. Safety critical components and parts
are maintained in stock at all key service locations to ensure minimum lead time when these parts are
required. Norsafe also has stock boats which can be used to substitute for onboard equipment
during the refurbishment process.

Norsafe has experienced specialists in repair, refurbishment and upgrading of any kind of lifeboat or
rescue boat. The equipment can be fully recertified before being returned to operation. Services can be
carried out at our manufacturing companies in Norway, China, Greece, Brazil and Mexico, as well as
at service stations in Singapore, South Korea, USA, Australia and Holland. Norsafe Group also has a
network of 40 additional service stations distributed in every part of the world. Our telephone service is
