Titanic and Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck

Movies those being played on Indonesian cinema are diverse. English movies and also
Indonesian movies can be found played at the same day. Those movies have both several positive
and negative aspects. From those aspects, I can feel happy, sad, upset, emotional, laughing, or even
crying because I could understand the deeper message from those movies. In this text, two movies
which came from different countries will be compared. Those movies have similar plot, meaning,
and setting. Those movies are Titanic and Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck. The first movie,
Titanic, is an epic-disaster drama movie produced in 1997. It was written and directed by James
Cameron. Titanic tells a love story between Jack (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (played
by Kate Winslet) who came from different social class. The setting of this movie is RMS Titanic
which sunk on its maiden sail on 15 April 1912. The second movie is Tenggelamnya Kapal Van
Der Wijck. This second movie is also a drama movie which also involved a ship. Tenggelamnya
Kapal Van Der Wijck was released in 2013. It was directed by Sunil Soraya and produced by Ram
Soraya. This movie tells about difference on social background that obstructs a love relationship
between Hayati (played by Pevita Pearce) and Zainudin (played by Herjunot Ali) which resulted in
death. Both films give meaning to a love story that cannot be separated by anything except death,
but the atmosphere and storyline are very different from that of Titanic which has a very coherent,
clear, more interesting atmosphere and storyline than Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck.

When I first saw the Titanic movie I felt happy and amazed how luxurious life was on the
Titanic. Adding to the atmosphere that is very supportive of the film, the storyline is very coherent
and clear, the players play the plot with a sense that the titanic film looks more like if it were real.
On the opening scene of Titanic, it can be felt the grandeur of the ship and its passenger who came
from all over the world. Rose was first shown on the movies entering the ship with her family and
fiancée named Caledon Nathan Hockley. It can be felt that Rose doesn’t like her life since she has
been arranged to marry a man of her parents’ choice, not hers. Coincidentally, Rose met a man of
her life, Jack, onboard the Titanic ship. The mood becomes happy when Rose meets Jack. They
always happily live their days on the ship. Settings and situations inside the movies really helps the

viewers to enjoy the sensation and emotion of Titanic. After a quite long trip on the sea, the ship
passes an iceberg. Titanic finally hits that iceberg and sinks into the bottom of the sea. On this
scene, Rose and Jack finally separated forever. Unavoidably, the viewers experienced deep sorrow
while watching this scene. The two lovebirds finally meets their inevitable demise.

I was very amazed to see Hayati and Zainudin's acting very animated in their role. Added to
the background atmosphere in Minang and Minang's unique music is very supportive of the
Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck movie’s storyline that happened in Minang. On the beginning
of Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck movie, I was a little confusing since the movie doesn’t
state its time or place. Initially, Zainudin went to Minang to reach his father hometown. In there,
Zainudin meets Hayati. Hayati is a descendant from a respectable Minang family. By the time
goes, Zainudin have feelings to Hayati and they decided to have relationship secretly. . It can be
seen here that ethnic difference becomes a challenge in having a relationship. Finally, their
relationship was blown. Zainudin is prohibited to see Hayati again. In the end, Hayati ends up
married to a rich but unfaithful and abusive gambler. Anger, upset, and disappointment is an
understatement for this scene. Caused by unhappy arranged ethnic marriage, Hayati feels
tormented and choose to divorce with her husband. Hayati now chooses to return to Zainudin
whom becomes successful and rich writer at Surabaya. Still wounded by the past, Zainudin orders
Hayati to returns to Minang. Hayati boards Van Der Wijck ship which eventually sinks. It was
confusing because the cause of the sinking is unexplained on the movie. Still, sorrow can be felt
since Hayati left Zainudin forever along with the ship sunk.

Both movies made me cry when I saw the conflict at the end of the story. they really
inspired his acting so that as if the story in this movies they really experienced it. Both movies tell
real events of accidents and arranged marriages by parents. Both movies also show that arranged
marriage by parents is not always the choice for their child. Titanic shows the situations onboard
the ship and the love story between Jack and Rose. Meanwhile, Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der
Wijck tells more about Hayati’s life before and after marriage and Zainudin’s process on becoming
successful. Both of those movies have sad ending caused by separation between the main
characters forever. The cause of their separation is also the same, ship sinking and then takes death
toll to their lover. Another similarity is the message which a hard decision is necessary to be taken
in order to fulfill happiness; even we have to against our family.

In conclusion, the Titanic and Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck have similarities in the
storyline but the two films also have differences. The setting of the Titanic movie is on the RMS
Titanic while Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck Movie is in the city of Minang. Both of these
films are Romantic films that contain many messages for those who see them, one of whom dares
to oppose parents' decisions for good and there are many things we can use to teach ourselves
about the people we love.
