Battle of Tippecanoe- In 1811, Governor Harrison marched
1,000 soldiers against Tecumseh’s town on the Tippecanoe
Creek. The prophet was in charge because Tecumseh’s was away organizing Indians in the South. The Prophet led a surprise night attack on Harrison’s troops. He told his warriors that the Great Spirit would protect him, and that the bullets would “bounce off their chests.” The bullets did not bounce off their chests, and soon they realized that they must fight the army themselves. Although more American soldiers died than natives, the village was destroyed, and Tecumseh’s dream of an alliance of Native American tribes slowly began to deteriorate. William Henry Harrison’s reputation as a protector of the Indiana territory grew as a result of this battle.
