East Gable Shawl

East Gable Shawl is a top down triangular shawl which may be easily enlarged by adding repeats of the main lace pattern.

Blocked size of samples shown: 48 inches wide by 21 inches deep

Materials
Fingering weight wool or wool blend - approximately 400 yd/370m for the size shown

The dark green sample - Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, 100% superwash merino [384m/420yd, 100 gram / 3.53 oz skein]: 1 skein Forestry

The light green sample - Wooly Wonka Brigit Sock, 100% organic merino [435 yd/402m, 100 gram/3.5 oz skein] - 1 skein Thornberry

3.75 mm (5 US) circular needle, 32 inches in length or size required to obtain gauge

Stitch markers

Gauge - 20 stitches to 4 inches over stocking stitch, unblocked. Gauge is not critical but may affect yardage required.

Pattern Notes
Please read through the entire
pattern before beginning to
knit.
When working from the charts, all
right side rows are odd numbered and
are read from right to left. All wrong
side rows are even numbered and are
read from left to right.
The 4 edge stitches (2 stitches at each
end of every row) are not shown on
the charts or written instruction. The
4 edge stitches are worked in garter
stitch (knit every row) throughout the
pattern.
The centre stitch is not shown on the
charts or written instruction and is
worked in stocking stitch (knit on RS,
purl on WS) throughout the pattern.
The red vertical lines on Chart A
indicate the stitch pattern repeat.
When working from the written
instructions to the charts, the
brackets in bold indicate the stitch
pattern repeat.
Optional: For the darker green
version I substituted the yarn overs at
the centre spine stitch with this
increase: using the left needle tip and
working from front to back, pick up
the bar between the stitch on the left
needle and right needle and then knit
into the front of it. This produces a
slightly smaller hole than a regular
yarn over.
Garter Tab Cast On
Cast on 2 stitches by making 2
backward loops onto the needle.
Knit 6 rows.

Next row: K2, do not turn work, but
rotate your work one quarter turn to
the right and pick up and knit 3
stitches along the left side edge of the
garter ridges (one stitch for each
garter ridge).
Turn the work another one quarter
turn to the right and pick up and knit
2 stitches (the two backward loops)
from the cast on edge. You should
have a total of 7 stitches on the
needle.
Next row (WS): K2, P1, PM, P1, PM,
P1, K2
You now have a marker on either side
of the center stitch. As you increase
on either side of this stitch be sure to
keep your markers right next to this
stitch.
Set Up Chart
The Set Up Chart represents one half
of the shawl. Work the 2 edge
stitches, work row 1 of the Set Up
Chart, work the centre stitch, work
row 1 again for the second half of the
shawl (reading in the same direction
as the first half) and finally end with
the 2 edge stitches.
Continuing in this manner, work rows
1 - 16 of the Set Up Chart once
only.
Chart A
Chart A is worked in the same
manner as the Set Up Chart.
The 16 rows of Chart A is the pattern
row repeat. Work these 16 rows a
total of 7 times. (112 rows)
End your last repeat of Chart
A after completing row 16.
If you wish to change the dimensions of
your shawl, Chart A may be repeated any
number of times. Yardage requirements
will vary.
Bind off
It is important to use the following
bind off method to ensure a stretchy
edge.
Bind off loosely on the right side
as follows:
Slip one stitch knitwise, knit one
stitch, *slip these two stitches
back to the left needle and
knit two together through the
back loop. Knit one*
Repeat * to * until all stitches are
bound off.
Finishing
Weave in your yarn tails but do not
trim until after blocking.
Soak your shawl in cool water and no
rinse wool wash for at least 30
minutes to allow the fibers to become
completely saturated.
Block as desired. I like to place
blocking wires along the top edge first
and secure with T-pins. Then I place
blocking wires on either side of the
centre spine and pin to secure. Finally,
I pull out the bottom edge to points
and secure with T-pins (see Chart A
for the placement of these T-pins.)
