INTRODUCTION TO JEE MAIN

JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) Main is to be conducted twice a year by the National
Testing Agency (NTA) for B. Tech admissions at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The
top 2 lakh odd JEE Main rankers will be able to attempt JEE Advanced which
offers admission into IITs. Hence, it is the most distinguished examination for the
engineering aspirants of the country. The examination will be conducted online
for a duration of 3 hours. Each section (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics)
will consist of 30 multiple choice questions. Each correct answer carries 4 marks,
each incorrect answer -1 mark, while no marks will be given for no response. The
paper will carry 360 marks in total. Medium of exam can be chosen from English,
Hindi or Gujarati (only for candidates from Gujarat, Daman & Diu and Dadra and

AADHAAR CARD MANDATE

From the academic year 2017-18, Aadhaar Card details were made mandatory for registra-
tion. Without filling your Aadhaar Card number, the application form will remain incom-
plete. Hence, candidates without an Aadhaar Card must apply for one before registering for
JEE Mains.
Candidates who have passed or are appearing for their 12th standard qualifying examination
from the states of J&K, Assam and Meghalaya are not obligated to submit their Aadhaar
Card number though. As an alternative, they may use their passport number, ration card
number, bank account number or any other legitimate Government identity number for
registration. However, the choice of the examination centre will be limited to respective
states only.

ELIGIBLITY
There is a set of eligibility criteria which must be fulfilled before applying for JEE Mains.
First and foremost, students must have passed 12th standard qualifying (or equivalent)
examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Although the weightage to 12th
standard marks in calculating All India Ranks has been cast off by the authorities, one is
required to score 75% marks (65% marks for SC/ST category) or be in the top 20 percentile
in 12th standard qualifying exam for admissions into NITs, IIITs and CFTIs.

JEE Main is not only the gateway to undergraduate engineering programmes at the 31 NITs,
23 IIITs and 20 CFTIs, but also the qualifying exam for appearing in JEE Advanced. If one
meets the qualifying eligibility criteria and scores enough to meet the JEE Main cutoff ranks,
then one will be eligible for B. Tech and B. Arch courses in NITs, IIIT and CFTIs. Moreover,
if one meets the qualifying cutoff set for JEE Advanced, then they can sit in the exam.

However, candidates who do not qualify for NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, must not lose hope.
There are various state and private institutes which offer admissions based on JEE Main
scores. Candidates can apply to such institutes to pursue engineering.
