II. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

DISCUSSION:
Read and analyze the problem.
2
Carlo earns ₱150 by selling newspapers. He sets aside 5
of it as his savings. How much does Carlo save from his
earnings?

4
What do we need to do in order to get the answer?
➢ Let us follow and use the steps in solving problems.
These are the following

Steps in Solving Routine Problems

a. Understand
• Know what is asked
• Know the given facts
b. Plan
• Determine the operation to be used
• Write the number sentence.
c. Solve
• Write the solution
• State the complete answer
d. Check and Look back
• Review your answers
• Check your answers
Steps in Solving Non-routine Problems
a. Read and analyze the problem carefully.
b. Tell what is asked and what are given.
c. Then, use other strategies like act out the problem,
listing/table method, guess and test,
drawing/making a diagram, using patterns,
working backwards, etc. to solve.
Let us now answer the following questions based on the
given problem:

1. What is being asked?

• The amount of Carlo’s savings from his earnings
2. What are given?

5
• P150 earnings of Carlo from selling newspapers
2
• Set aside 5 of P150 as Carlo’s savings

3. What operation to be used?

• Multiplication
4. What is the number sentence?
2
• x 150 = N
5

5. How will you solve the problem?

2
x 150 = N
5
2 150 300
x = = 60
5 1 5

Answer: P60.00 is the amount to be saved by Carlo from his

earnings
6. How do you review and check your answer?
• Follow these guide questions:
✓ Did I do the operation correctly?
✓ Is my answer reasonable?
✓ Did I write my answer in complete sentence?

Another Example:

1
Lucy’s mother worked in her boutique for 2 hours each day
2
for 2 weeks. How many hours did she work in all?

number of hours she worked in

Know what is asked
Step 1: all
1
Understand 2 2 hours each day
Know the given facts
2 weeks
Step 2: Determine the operation to
Multiplication
Plan be used

6
1
Write the number sentence 2 × 14 = N
2
1
2 ×14 = N
2
1 14
22× 1
=N
Step 3: Show your solution
5 14 7
× =N
Solve 1 2 1
5 7 35
× = = 35
1 1 1

State the complete answer. Lucy’s mother worked 35 hours

in 2 weeks or 14 days.
• Did I do the operation
Step 4: correctly?
• Is my answer
Check and
reasonable?
Look Back
• Did I write my answer
in a complete
sentence?

Generalization:
The steps in solving routine problems
are:
A. Understand
Know what is asked, what are given
B. Plan
Know what operation. Write the
number sentence.
C. Solve
Write the correct units/label your
answers
D. Check and Look Back
Review and check your answers.
In solving non- routine problems
involving multiplication without or with
addition or subtraction of fraction and
whole numbers, read and analyze the
problem carefully. Tell what is asked and
what are given. Then, use other
strategies (like acting out the problem,
listing/table method, guessing and
testing, drawing/making a diagram,
using patterns, working backwards) to
solve.

7
III. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED
EVALUATION/POST TEST:
